He was also a songwriter and co wrote Delta Dawn made famous by Tanya Ticker. And "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma" made famous by David Frizzel and Shelly West.
This is astonishing! I don't understand why The Collins Kids are not better known as they seemed to be far ahead of the curve. Larry is an incredible performer and artist, and his sister is an excellent singer gifted with charming beauty.
Growing up in London during the 50/60s I knew a lot of street musicians, some of them were streets ahead of their 'pop' contemporaries in terms of talent and they, without doubt, inspired better known bands. The last thing they wanted was to be better known or celebrities.
Because musicians Could not OWN there own music, even if they wrote it. The contracts would RIP OFF the artists in favor of the Record Producers and Studios keeping the musicians in the Poor House. The musicians would have to try to sue each other over the COPY RIGHTS. Although I don't know the details, Trump attempted to address this during his time in office with one of his "Presidential Bills" (Sorry I'm Canadian not sure of the proper American name for it)
@@dolceanstar No Trump was the Sitting President at the time. All presidents Sign these, its part of being the President. they All do this. The same way The Pres, opened or closed the PIPE LINE that kept getting opened by the REP'S then shut down by the DEM'S. At any rate I only heard about it briefly then the story got buried. but the reaction at the time was it was probably a good Bill for the Artists
I'm 70 years old, I'm an old rocker Can't believe I've never heard of these people before. From what I've seen they weren't treated right. They should be very famous especially the kid Playing guitar outrageously
This was incredible music for 1953. What you have to understand is that in 1953 most singers were not performers. They came out and stood in front of a mic and sang their song, thanked you and walked away. To see Larry then, was almost unbelieveable. It's still incredible.
This is roughly November/December, 1958 on Town Hall Party. But the Collins Kids had already developed an original Rockabilly style, and at ages 13(Lorrie) and 11(Larry), they were already rocking on THP in February, 1954! That's BEFORE Bill Haley and the Comets released "Rock Around The Clock" in April, 1954. before Elvis released his first record in July, 1954, before Chuck Berry's first record in May 1955 and before Buddy Holly's first record in May, 1957. This incredible Sister-Brother Duo are NOT in the R&R Hall of Fame, but they should have been some of the very first inductees.
The Collins kids were already rocking on the Town Hall Party in February, 1954 at ages 13 (Lorrie) and 11 (Larry), BEFORE Elvis released his first Sun Records recording in July, 1954 and before Chuck Berry's first recording released in May 1955. Buddy Holly's first recording wasn't released until May, 1957. So the Collins Kids are rightfully and correctly considered original Rockabilly pioneers, as they had created a Rockabilly style all their own even before Bill Haley and the Comets released "Rock Around The Clock" in April 1954.
Condolences to the family on her passing. These two had so much natural talent, Larry could play the double fret like nobody's business and Lorries voice was amazing!
I used to watch this kid on TV in the fifties at 5 a.m. and couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t famous. It came on at 5 a.m. in Jackson, Mississippi when there were 2 channels and an antenna was the only way to get them. It wasn’t until I saw him on here that I knew who he was because I had forgotten his name.
I remember seeing a few Tex Ritter Ranch Party shows on our little round-tube tv in the '50's and saw Larry and Lorrie with the audience going wild over them, then I never saw or heard of them again. I was in awe how Larry could play, dance around, and sing harmony all at the same time.
Incredible talent!!! Really ahead of everybody! 2023, just discovered these guys. The girl can sing, the guy can play - and that guitar!! Whatever happened to them??
The Collins Kids continued to play together into the 1960s, then separately, and occasionally together, thereafter. Larry wrote songs, including several that were hits when other artists recorded them. Lawrencine Mary “Lorrie” Collins died in 2018. Larry is still alive, although I think he is largely retired from performing.
lorrie dated ricky nelson and did a couple episodes of ozzie and harriet, larry co wrote at least two famous songs, Delta Dawn and You're the reason God made Oklahoma
i see the comments are loaded with those just discovering these kids from the past, their story is amazing and the time they were at the top in their field they toured with some of the greats, take the time to look at their story, you can't help but be in awe.
She used to date Rick Nelson until her parents put an end to it and she ended up marrying her Mgr. who was a lot older than her. Look up the You Tube "Just Because" by Ricky Nelson & Lorie Collins.
joe maphis was his mentor, i am also in awe, im really and old fart and i grew up in this era, even lived in compton for a while and never heard of these kids, all i can say i wow.
Little Larry had all the moves and guitar licks before Chuck Berry why is it that no one has ever heard of them. They are the pioneers of rock and roll!
Shit doesn't get holier than this. Larry Collins should be in the guitar god pantheon alongside Beck, Clapton, Burton, and so many others that are already appreciated.
@@bobwilson360 it was skiffle, not rock-'n'-roll, jimmy was a premier session guitarist in the early 60s, later joined the yAdbiRds & you know the rest of the story. I like 'em both🎸🎸
Maybe someday your name will be up in lights, saying “Larry B. Goode Tonight”. Chuck Berry would have been proud. Those two were some serious rock and rollers, Larry and Lorrie Collins.
I hear their record company was "old school" and didn't really know what to do with them. Also, when Lorrie turned 17 she eloped with Johnny Cash's booking agent who was twice her age. Larry found out while he was in school, ran out of the building, down an alley, sat down, and just cried his eyes out.
If people freaked out about Elvis, imagine what some thought about this kid. Jumping around like he was possessed with that devilish smile the whole time. 😈 🤭 He was with it!👍 Talented.
If it wasn't for You Tube we would never have heard of these two incredible young talents. Sometime in the 1950s I suspect. Never heard of them and I have played in bands all my life since I left school in 1968. So I would have been 7 or 8 at the time when I started playing along to Elvis, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, then The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Small Faces etc. Wow.
This is from the show "Town Hall Party", a weekly live show produced in Compton, CA in the late 50s. Lot's of country western music on the show, with the great Merle Travis (wrote and recorded "16 Tons") as one of the regulars. Almost anyone who anyone in country music at the time was featured on the show at one time or another. They also had quite few early rockers, The Collins Kids (this video), Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins and several others.
I loved how as Larry shredded and danced across the stage, his sister, with the grace of a ballet-dancer and a gorgeous smile, stepped over and dodged his guitar-cord flawlessly...professionals through and through.
I was a tv a holic as a kid. I was about 6 or 7 and new about the older music and liked it. I have a sister, 5 years my senior so while she was in the house one of the 3 rock and roll stations was on. I never saw these pair. I think the people up north missed out of a lot of good music and talent by the use of the NYC filter. I’m from DEEEEtroit.
@@jwprewett they played rock n roll to a country crowd. Also both are highly respected in the rockabilly crowds. Race had nothing to do it, if anything being white then would of helped them.
Because Jann Wenner and his hand-picked Board only allow their favorites to get into the R&R HOF. There are definitely some people in there who don't belong, and there are still a lot of people (e.g., the Collins Kids, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Iron Maiden, Foreigner, etc.) who are on the outside looking in. The HOF is a joke.
chuck berry is my hero but when this lil collins kids came in with that opening riff and jus the same amount of swag , i was taken away . they have a lot good songs , rip the collins siblings 🕊️
I was a kid during this era and for some reason never heard of the Collins kids back then. Only in my adulthood did I become aware of them. Life is strange. As good as they were they should have been all over American Bandstand, which they weren't.
