I saw very interesting video about whole melting and grating of soap into mug or bowl. They actually just made surface wet left it there for a while and just pressed it into a mug. Apparently after a day you can just start using it it wont start moving around because it is glued and after some time it will just completely melt into shape of a dish.

I really like the way Col Conk leaves my face feeling. The soap feels more of a cleansing soap than a moisturizing soap. If you tend to use post shave balms or lotions then you probably don't need the soap to do the majority of the moisturizing. I agree that you don't want to shave a spot you've already completed without re-lathering! The only issue I have is the lather doesn't tend to last as long as say Mike's natural soaps, so I have to finish quicker! But overall I like the Conk as a good low price shave soap.

For the price colonel conk is hard to beat - a great lather and I love the scent. Though it does tend to dry me out

Love this stuff. I find for me maybe it's because of the avocado oil in it but my skin feels great after I use it. It also lathers incredibly well with either my synthetic or my silvertip badger brush. it's a bit expensive up here in Canada at about $8.50 for a 3.5oz puck but it's hard enough that it lasts forever and I'll definitely be re ordering more when I run out. Lots of people hate on this stuff but if you love Bay Rum it's a must try and one of my top 3 in my rotation of about 10 soaps now

I noticed that you had alittle issue with the slickness of both this soap and tabac. I know you ARE not a fan of needing additional products but a few drops of glycerin in a bowl and lather in it will completely remedy the problem. its actually really nice no matter what soap you use

I use a stainless bowl for my conk soaps, so i cant microwave it. What i do is place the puck into my shaving bowl and place it in a pot of boiling water, and it melts into the bowl. This heats it up very gently. I then place it in the fridge to cool. Ive found with the conk, that if you put a tablespoon of hot water on the puck before you shave and let it set a while Then pour this water into your mug and load the brush on the softened top layer of the puck, you can whip up a pretty cushiony lather. I load off the puck in the steel bowl, and lather in a seperate apothocary mug. Works for me.

I've been using those products for about eighteen years - I especially love the almond scent - it is just Nice. One time a woman at Conk told me Van der Hagen "pours their soaps for them." Van der Hagen scented Luxury shave soap is great and cheap !! Please try it. I don't always use an aftershave, but I should . I LOVE Neutrogena Razor Defense after shave - definetly my favorite. Please try it, Nick.

This soap was included for free when I ordered the Van Der Hagen men's luxury shave set on Amazon (the seller must have felt generous that day lol) I've been using the Van Der Hagen soap that came with the set but I want to try the Bay Rum to see if there is a difference. You should review one of the Feather brand safety razors, I hear nothing but good things

Nick, I love this bay rum soap. I always thought it had a more cinnamon type of scent (due to the cloves) it reminded me of clove cigarettes when I smoked in Indonesia. On vacation.

Have already tried the Col Conk bayrum at least 3or4 times already have to say that I like the scent of bayrum. The only problem I see is that soap does not offer enough protection after the first or second pass before needing too lather up again.

I got the Col Conk sampler pack. I didn't like the Amber or Bay Rum scents as much as I liked the Almond, and to a lesser extent, Lime. Overall I like the soaps, and I agree about not providing additional slickness after the lather is shaved off.

I like it :) I'm happy you enjoyed it always good to see people who enjoy things others like. What I like most about it is that it doesn't have a clover scent. I strongly dislike that smell and I seem to pick up on the scent of clovers very easily. I bought some shaving oil and it smells like its made from 100% clover oils.....

you can also just put it in the mug with some hot water. After that it sticks to the mug and it wil only let lose if you shake it really hard while its upside down.

+Wessel Vis I found the puck doesn't fit my apothecary mug very well so a lot of the lather gathers around the gap, never occurred to me to melt it until this video.

Doc, you answered my question about the slickness. I'm now thinking that my thin 65 year old skin is not going to have the protection that would be offered with other soaps or gels. Nivea shaving gel and the Cremo seem to be my go to for preventing irritation especially on my neck area. Thanks for the review.

How strong is the cinamon hint in this? I like bay rum whe it has a strong cinamony hint to it, like the Dr. Squatch, or Duke Canon bay rum.

On Amazon you can get the variety pack which is 4 pucks of each scent for about $11-12 about three bucks a puck

I got a sample pack of these soaps from Amazon the other Dan and tried the almond and bay rum, like the shave I got with it, but the scent isn't there at all, dry just opening the plastic pack I can small it just fine, but during the lather, during the shave and after the shave before rinse and after shave I don't get a large amount of scent, for the price I can't really complain, but I wish it had some staying power for the scents

Spot on review. I have the Col Conk High Desert Breeze and while it smells alright, I feel the product itself isn't high quality. Gonna invest in an aloe vera cream with vitamin e soon to really get moneys worth from a shaving soap/cream. The residual slickness is def not present with Col Conk brand soaps

after watching this... I clearly need to use a deeper cup... I used this stuff recently and found that I didn't get half the lather but the cup I used wasn't as deep... clearly I need more lather cause man was it a rough shave!

another way to make the soap stick and not spin is to simply put drops of water in the mug and then put the soap in and let the water dry. what happens is the water dries then the soap sticks.

Those spots that arent slick may just be dry because of water evaporation. Try wetting it and see if it slicks up again. Maybe the soap is slick but dries quickly? Not a bad soap for the price though, but maybe the same quality as the Van Den Hagen soap which is just a bit cheaper.

I shave down, then up, then a few areas where I go diagonally. I have to for a close shave. I use the same razor you do with Feather blades. I'm still looking for a soap that lubricates the face well enough without having to apply more suds. I use Proraso soap, but have to reapply.

nick shaves what the fuck is it with you and trying to find everything cheap? My god, have you ever fucking heard the term "you get what you pay for"? Ya fucking holtz! I'm not saying there is good cheaper products out there but take the guesswork out of it and get something good quality which usually has a higher price tag on it. It's almost like you're against anything that isn't"wipe your fucking ass" cheap!

The seemingly lowly Palmolive shave stick offers great lather, slickness, and post shave properties for me. The price is great too, if you don't mind the scent (which I think smells like Palmolive bar soap.) I hear their shaving cream is good too.

Col. Conk was my first soap buy when i switched to DE razor. I picked up the sampler pack. The Almond was a nice smell, but seemed to offer the worst shave. The Amber offered a decent shave, but I was a bit iffy about the scent. The Lime and Bayrum offered the best shaves of the four, and had great scents. The Lime smells like citrus soda, specifically Surge, if you can remember that. The Bayrum scent however, as Nick says, is truly special. I have switched to Stirling bayrum after watching Nick's review, and for a similar price point, the shave it offers and the lather are on a totally different level, but I honestly enjoyed the scent of the Col. Conk bayrum more. The Stirling is a "spicier" scent, while the Conk is mild, and sweeter. Has anybody else come across a bayrum with similar scent to Conk, that offers a better shave, or is it really just that unique?

He's said in a few videos that boars are stiffer and easier to lather with. He mostly uses them when using hard puck soaps because I see him using his Simpsons chubby all the time for softer soaps like caties bubbles

Sigh you lucky people..i can lather w tub soaps ..tubes..gels.. Anything except for pucks :( i have two kinds and col conk is one it dries to quickly for me and just vanishes even if i use a scuttle..ill try the microwave and maybe grater as person said below

hey nick, just wanted to see what your opinion on this stuff was. i was given a sample puck from a friend. it's clear to me why. he just couldn't bring himself to throw shaving soap away but had to get rid of it. i found the same problem as you. although more so. severly lacking in the slickness department. this is not a straight razor shaving soap. 3 shaves with this stuff and still it performs sub par, safety razor it's passable but with my straight razor and kamisori, they practically stick to my face. so essentially 0 slickness. at first i thought i just wasn't getting the lather right but no the lather was fine, just not slick at all. the scent was ok but i've had better. to any straight razor/kamisori shavers like me out there thinking of trying this, don't do it. this stuff is aweful.

Rather than melt this and risk it.. I usually grind it up with a cheese grater, add it to whatever mug you use, throw in a tiny amount of water and then mash it all back down to a hard puck with the bottom of a glass. Works great for any hard puck. Takes about 10 minutes but no big deal.

Bryan Wickel Almost every hard puck! It wont work with TALLOW based soaps! Like Fine Accoutrements soap!! I learned the hard way! 😢😢

I'm having trouble getting slickness as well with the soaps I use. Currently have proraso green and new formula bay rum from synergy. Just like you pointed out, a few seconds after the razor passes over the skin, it gets dry without slickness. I do still use the escali badger. Could that maybe be the reason for lack of slickness?

Make sure that you have enough water in your lather. Also, spend the time whipping up a rich lather on your face or in a bowl. A good brush always helps. I highly recommend getting an Omega Boar brush - all of them seem to be amazing!

Col. Conk builds a nice lather very quickly, but unfortunately I found its performance comparable to Van der Hagen Deluxe. Not very protective. With a more aggressive razor, my face and neck was bright red after a shave with this soap. Never again.

Every soap has turned me red and burned. I've been looking into making my own soap, but without sodium hydroxide, using instead, potassium hydroxide. I know it stays mostly liquid, but there are some cream shaving soaps out there. Sadly, the first I used also turned me red. If you find one that doesn't turn you red or burn you, please let me know what it is so that I can try it. I think the closest thing that didn't burn was clary sage and orange by Saint James of London. I think I will try a different one of theirs next month. :

nick shaves with nick you don't even need to ask the holtz. Just assume everything is the bottom of the barrel, cheapest shit product you can find. Thats nick shaves for ya!
