New Conk Soap-Experiment-Still Microwaveable? & Progress Razor Shave

Geofatboy performs an experiment to see if the NEW Formula Colonel Conk Shaving Soap is still microwaveable. The old soaps were glycerin based and could be melted down and poured into the container of your choosing. These new soaps? Well, watch and find out for yourself! After the experiment is complete, he lathers up the New Colonel Conk Bay Rum soap in the travel jar, then further lather is generated with the Simpsons Trafalgar T2 shaving brush in the Shave Nation Lather Bowl. The razor used is the Merkur Progress Adjustable Safety Razor loaded with a Feather blade. The Shave Nation Wide Stick Alum Block is followed up by Proraso Aloe and Vitamin E Aftershave Balm. Adjustable razors allow you to turn the dial to match your particular beard growth on any given day. Geo uses the 6-3-1 method to achieve progressive beard reduction easily. I have the same problem with Mitchell’s Woolfat soap. It seems to dry too fast, but it does have a real slick lather. I think it’s just the nature of tallow based soaps.

@@perfectshave85 I don’t have any idea. But I do know it is very slick. It’s the slickest shaving soap I’ve ever used. I don’t need a pre shave oil with it.

The “old” Colonel Conk Bay Rum was one of my favorite soaps. The scent was great and the fact that you could melt it to fit different bowls and mugs was a plus. The new formulation smells nothing like a bay rum, but rather some cheap drug store soap. I’m very disappointed to see them change such a great soap.

Good tip about testing a small amount of any shaving soap to see if it can be melted in the microwave. I noticed that the Conk soap dissipated noticeably for your 2nd pass. Nevertheless, you showed that it performed well and provided a close, smooth shave.

I don’t know how I feel about this, I love the lime scent but I always rebatch 1 large with a PAA cube and pour it into smaller sizes. I guess I need to get as many of the old style ones as I can get now.

Just got my first new one without realizing they had changed (I usually buy 6 months worth at a time). I hate it. No microwave in my shave mug means I won't be buying any more. Off to find a new brand. Pity, because I really liked Col. Conk's, and it had been the only one I was buying for the past nine or ten years.

Never again, I recently destroyed my mother's microwave and her kitchen ceiling. I will never again try to melt any shaving soap again. It is not worth it, you can always carry a cream when travelling.

Have you ever tried shave soaps by Sterling Soap Co.? Some of the best I've tried. Electric sheep is a great cooling menthol. Barbershop smells like a old Barbershop. Just some great scents. Definitely give them a try geo.

I just found out they changed the formula. I have been using their bay rum for years. I won’t buy the new formula. I’ll still to buying old stock. Your progress goes to 6? Mine only goes down 5 did they make them more aggressive?

*How do you ensure you don't transfer any Conk Soap residue or smell if using the same brush with a different soap for the next shave?* Maybe I'm overthinking this, but in the past I always used one soap until it was gone. Now, I enjoy rotating 2 razors and playing with a half dozen soaps. However, I do worry that my one badger brush has residue from all of them...no matter how I try to keep it clean. Any tips would be appreciated? or words to say I'm worrying needlessly would also help! Geo, another useful and entertaining shaving video in the catalog!

Honestly I think you're worrying about nothing, I use a few different scented soaps and usually use my badger brush and as long as you rinse it out good with good hot tap water any residual smell will be covered up by the scent of whatever soap you're using the next time, Hope this helps. So in your opinion the new formula isn't as good as the old formula? One reason why I stopped using Arko was because it would start to feel dry on my skin. Also Have you tried to get Derby shaving soap back in stock? That soap didn't dry on my skin and the tub would last forever.

Geo 🪒🪒 The "old" formula worked fine, why the new one? Oh well, nice experiment that shows it no longer meets qualifications for repackaging. Merkur Progress is a great razor IMO, always provides a quality shave. Nice shave and results, thanks. Enjoy!
