Good tutorial. It's always prudent and fun to occasionally revisit proper bowl lathering technique, which lends itself to those who suffer from brush burn when face lathering. Keep the great content coming. You're raising the standard for wet shaving, both as a hobby and a daily grooming ritual.

Very nice tutorial Chris thank you. I was bowl lathering the wrong way for a year lol. I always used damp brush and splayed it that is why I got so many bubbles and airy lather. I will try doing it your way I think I will have a lot better luck. Thanks Obi One Kenobi :) I always learn a lot from you and appreciate it. Enjoy your Sunday.
@IAMCDB

Thanks so much Sean. I try not to splay too much early on as I believe it adds more air to the mix. Even if you do add too much air, you can eventually beat it into submission.

This is actually very handy and informative and I appreciate this, I’ve been wet shaving for about two or three years so I’ve built up a collection of a handful of safety razors and a few different blades and tons of brushes but I want to start exploring different shaving soaps, i usually get the Wilkinson Sword shaving soap at the drug store and it dissolves/disappears within at least a month and if I go out and buy some more expensive ones and buy a collection of them I’d want them to last a long time

It’s great you mentioned you don’t need high end soaps to get great results , I have always said cella is as good as anything , simple cheap soaps can give you the same result as whatever is out there. I use aftershave products so what would I care how any of those expensive soaps perform in post shave.
@IAMCDB

Thanks sir. I certainly enjoy the great scents and some of the luxurious lathers the pricier stuff can provide. That said, when it comes to nuts and bolts, many of these inexpensive products will work just as effectively.

Nice video. Made me grab my puck of C. Conk Bay rum out of the cupboard for my evening SR shave. I find glycerin base soaps to be better bowl lathering as for me it takes little longer (okay, I am still learning, so much longer) to get from bubble stage to creamy stage but I agree. Good slickness. I find the scent strength to be not as strong as Stirling or B&M but could be the reason to pay more for added scent strength. All three soaps mentioned can provide a great shave so yeah, I like the Conk! Can't beat the price and small size is great to bring on travel.

Nice Vid Chris watched you do this in the past but always like to watch how to videos. Never know what you will pick up.👍 Do you feel the the bowls with ridges just speed up the process. I’ve never been a good bowl latherer but never tried one of those types of bowls.
@IAMCDB

Thanks sir. Yes, bowls with ridges help to agitate. This certainly aids in the lather making process.

Whenever I bloom a soap I always give it at least a day to airdry out and I've never had a mold problem. I do live in California which is a pretty dry climate though. Maybe it's the more humid regions which have more issues with mold?
@IAMCDB
@IAMCDB 3 года назад
Yea, it's an odd thing. I've had it happen to me personally and I've see it happen to others. On the other hand, most people never seem to have a problem with it.
@johnathonnichols

The first good lathers I ever worked up were with Van Der Hagen deluxe. Less than $1 an ounce through Walgreens (2.29 for 2.5 ounces). Many cheap soaps aren't the best, but will certainly get the job done. I've had better luck with face lathering and it's faster. I find I use La Toja stick and Proraso red in a tube the majority of the time because of how quick they lather. There's also no fear of contamination with either one.
@IAMCDB
@IAMCDB 3 года назад
Excellent points all around sir. I primarily bowl lather just to keep water and contaminates out of my soap tub. You're right, by using a shave stick you avoid all these sort of problems:)
@hauntedpandaofgreyvalley803
@hauntedpandaofgreyvalley803 3 года назад
I wonder if my issue with TOBS is not adding enough water. Always get rougher shaves with it than other artisan soaps that are harder. With TOBS being so creamy, I just add enough water to get it to a sheen with peaks/valleys.
@IAMCDB
@IAMCDB 3 года назад
It could be. With something like TOBS I wouldn't add too much water quickly in the beginning, as I did here. I would add far less in the beginning but I'd keep working water in until you're happy with it.
@mikekisonu6825

Another great, CONCISE, informative video, “CDB!” 😊 Couple of questions for ya - 1. Does it matter if the bowl you use has some kind of RIDGES in it, vs the traditional, SMOOTH shaving bowls/cups? 2. Would you get a BETTER lather using a BADGER brush, since it naturally retains MORE water? Thanks, “CDB,” and remember to always... “RESPECT THE CONK!” 😆😂🤣
@IAMCDB
@IAMCDB 3 года назад
I think the ridges might help a little with agitation but it’s probably not a huge difference. I don’t thinkthe brush type doesn’t matter at all, it’s the user’s experience with any given brush type that matters. In other words, if someone used any type of brush enough, they’d eventually master it:) Thanks so much Mike!

10 fl oz 30 minutes better to have excess soap than excess water 💦
@10floz30minutes
@10floz30minutes 3 года назад
@@DailyCarrySolutions you will understand, CDB did add an amount of water to give a good match to the amount of soap he took. If he had taken less soap, he would have used correspondingly less water. He used an amount of water that seemed to work. The lather made could easily be enough for maybe four shaves. Honestly, I do not use Colonel Conk soap any more so am not as familiar; if I were to make use of Colonel Conk soap again, then I would think a little differently ; but just based on Col. Conk soap.

My face can’t tolerate the menthol in Stirling Iced Pineapple but I love the scent. So to sort of get around it, I make the lather in a bowl that way it spends less time on my face but long enough for me to shave with it. I also bowl lather with soaps that come in a tin because some of them have started to rust when I loaded from them. Something about loading my brush with soap and rust bothers me. Thankfully some traditional shaving evangelist 😜 made videos about preferring plastic containers and coincidentally one artisan after another followed suit.
@IAMCDB

It does everything I need a soap to do. In terms of the mechanics of the shave it doesn't lack anything. You might be able to make an argument about post shave or something like that but post shaving isn't something I evaluate or care about.
