Color Classic No. 4: The Song of the Birds (1935) 

This cartoon used to frighten me when I was a kid. My mom always told me that I'd cry hysterically whenever I saw it. Years later, I still get a little teary, seeing it again, especially when the robins are preparing to bury the baby. :(

YES I FINALLY FOUND IT! I had a VHS when I was little that was a compilation of Walter Lantz cartoons, this was the one I remember most vividly.

It's totally amazing to me that such a simple media has the power to demonstrate good and evil, joy and pain in such stark and unmistakable terms. Fantastic work really and so basic to the core of what we believe is right or wrong. Thanks for sharing this piece of art. I've never seen it before, but I won't soon forget it. :)

I remember this cartoon, watching it on our b&w TV over 45 years ago. I get tears forming every time the boy cries in thankfulness to God for bringing the bird back to life. I remember that one. Poor Opey was so mortified! But he redeemed himself by taking in the baby birds and raising them until they are old enough to fly and live on their own.

this also made me cry as a kid..what a traumatizing experience lol

This was indeed remade as a 1949 "Noveltoon", (featuring "Little Audrey") under the same title...

This cartoon reminds me of my cousin. He too shot a bird with his BB gun and cried afterwards that he killed a poor creature.

I remember my grandmother tellin me about this cartoon...sheesh...now i know what she means.

This used to make me so sad when I was a kid. Now I find the funeral scene kind of creepy, haha.

I am looking for a cartoon with a little girl who had a gun and accidentally shot a bird. I had it on VHS and my granddaughter loved it. She now has a daughter and I would like for her to see it. Have looked but unable to find it online.

This is similar to an Andy Griffith episode where Opey (I don't know if I have his name spelled right.) accidentally shoots a mother bird.
