For the short film we recently made with Weta Workshop, Joey color graded the footage using the Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel. In this review, Joey goes through his workflow for grading the shots to get specific looks, and tests this physical control panel to get the most out of the DaVinci Resolve software.

Color correction is an art form of its own
@moonstriker7350
@moonstriker7350 6 лет назад
Color correction is the "art" for the plebs, that's for sure. That's why it has 500000 "experts" posting 1000 tutorials/day just on youtube. Telltale sing of a very low entry barrier... in short any child could do it. Compare f.e. how many vids you will see of someone drawing an artistic portrait with graphite, which is actually fine art level skill.
@JonasBorho
@JonasBorho 5 лет назад
Moon Striker I think what he means is good color grading. Everybody can play around with nobs and sliders but not so many can do it with style and that is the art

A lot of people became professional colorists in the comments section. These are controls to make life easier for colorists. You all say mouse and keyboard are good enough but try coloring a feature film or even just a short film. You will see the time difference by days.

I'm pretty new to editing videos for my RU-vid channel and have been upgrading software as I found need for more capabilities. Yeah, my cam is cheap, but its waterproof, and I use a Soloshot 3 cam to follow me around. So obviously good software is a must to get somewhat close to the same look as a final result. I just recently upgraded to Davinci Resolve Studio about 2 months ago along with an all new full blown editing suite. I tried my hand at color correction and learned very quickly how labor intensive and time consuming it can be. Just a dozen or so short clips and a few longer ones to make a 12 minute final video took almost 2 days to get consistency throughout. Seriously considering the mini for my suite which I think could cut the color correcting time in half or better.

Nice review. Thanks. I’d recommend the Elgato Streamdeck. That’ll give you the programmable buttons you’re missing. I use it to add node before or after and (using macros) even auto-name the nodes. Also REALLY useful for logging keywording. And cheap.

@gameoverwehaveeverypixelco1258
Cool. One mistake people màke when filming is that you should make the close up subject as bright as the background or sky so you get detail in the close up subject and sky, it stops the background blowing out as you adjust contrast etc later. Adjust aperture or iso etc so both are now detailed and no blowout. I see in a lot of movies that people closeup standing at a window will be clearly lit but they had to blowout the background to achieve that and detail is lost in the background. it's all white and too contrasty behind them.

Log is like an EQ bell curve button. It applies a logarithmic curve to the controls. I can't wait to dive into resolve and blender. I like nodes better than layers in Adobe. It's easily translatable because I am visualizing what is being done in terms of producing editing mixing and mastering music. Different palette but the process is the same.🔥🔥🔥🔥

if you want some extra programmable buttons by the side so you can work without the keyboard infront of you. i can reccomend the elgato stream deck, you get 15 fully programmable buttons with the fullsize one or 6 with the mini

i have just realised why BMD are ignoring requests to allow full-screen monitoring on a second or third monitor -- it would negate one of the key benefits of this console -- being able to grade whilst watching the image in full resolution :-) Smart for BMD, a shame for Resolve users :-/

Awesome stuff Joey! I'd like to see some responsive motorized stuff on the cheap for editing though... keep dreaming keep dreaming, but you know. xD Just imagine a panel like that with lots of levers and stuff that will automatically set itself up with all the relevant configurations and setups... oooh yeah. xD
@moviesmagicandmore12
@moviesmagicandmore12 6 лет назад
Except that would be completely dumb and pointless, and would add unnecessary extra cost for no benefit at all. You don't any "levers" to color grade anything, and all the necessary controls are rotary encoders and trackballs, not potentiometers. A motorized rotary encoder is completely and utterly pointless.

For what it is it actually isn't expensive... it does look quite cheap plastic tho i wonder how it feels like and how durable it is. Also i see no reason it has to be as thic as it is... it could have in built stand and still be as slim as a tablet.. that would make it a lot more portable.

I always find it funny what a large channel, like one with 4M subs, accepts a product for review but has to return it. I'd tell Black magic to go to hell. RU-vidrs provide the most effective marketing, since people are watching the video because it's something they're interested in, and that's worth more than that stupid panel. "Here, use this panel and review it, but send it back to us." What's in it for the creator? Absolutely nothing, except maybe a few extra views from the product.
