Color Vision Test - Official Version 

It's funny how some people say this test is "easy". It's not meant to be a difficult test, it's meant for people to figure out of they're colourblind or not. Thank you for making this video, I found it very helpful! :)

It doesn't matter how old you are, if you are colour blind, you are colour blind. If your not, your not.

Color vision deficiency is the worst thing that could happen to me! I was accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and wanted to fly for the Air Force, passed everything, even was tested to have a 20/20 vision, but failed this test. I then took the lantern test, passed that, and was told by the Navy and Marine Corps that I can fly for them. So that was a little bit of a relief!

A friend of mine is color deficient and has sold several of his painting. Do not let it hold you back. Thanks for writing.

Thank you for taking the time to write and sharing your job experience. You are not alone. Many people who are labeled color deficient have proven they can do a job that supposedly requires "normal" color vision.

I just downloaded a program called WhatColor, and it's amazing. You just hold the pointer over a part of the screen and the program tells you what color what you're pointing at is. I really recommend it to everyone who's colorblind, really helps a lot!

Thank you for your comment. On the 6 test plates with the circle, star, and/or square, you should have seen at least "one" object. People who are color normal see two objects and those who are color deficient normally see only one object.

Thank you for letting others know what pairs of colors you have trouble seeing. The colors you listed are common "confusion colors".

PSA: If you failed on *any* of these plates (assuming you're old enough), then *go to your vision care professional and ask them to do the full/proper test*. This test can be inaccurate because monitors render colours differently. So please get a professional to do the test if you have any doubts.

@TheKrupkee Thank you for your comment. The plates do screen for red-green color vision deficiencies. There are no plates for congential blue-yellow deficiencies (tritan). Congenital tritan deficiencies are extremely rare. Thanks again.

Was it just me or did anyone else notice they didn't highlight the Blue and Yellow shapes? The only ones they showed in the answer were the red and green ones.

I can easily discriminate between individual dots, but I don't see the patterns. Weird. I don't see the 5, even after being shown. I think it's because of all of the yellow and orange dots breaking up the pattern. My brain can't seem to ignore them to see the rest of the pattern.

@themaun Thank you for your comment. It is likely that you are deuteranomaly, which is "less" severe. Deuteranomaly individuals have three photo cone pigments but one pigment is not quite right, where as, deuteranopia individuals have only two photo cone pigments. Thanks again.

I have color deficient vision. When I was a kid and still to this day if I were to stare at something green for a long time, when I looked away, everything in my vision had a red tint. And vice versa, staring at red would make everything green when I looked away.

As an artist, I channeled my red-green colorblindness as an art. I paint landscape using my own colors. I paint an object the way i see it. It has been my work's objective to let other people ( the normal ones) have a glimpse to my world. Thanks to my grade school art teacher for commending my "Pink Swan Lake", lol. I picked a color that represents my vision for the lake's water, and they said I picked the color pink. huh?

Someone may have vision impairment: the flutist playing the music is James Galway, not James Calway. Moreover, the actual title of the track is 'The Minstrel Boy' and is from the album titled The Celtic Minstrel. Your sight problem means you struggle to discern 'G' from 'C'.

The colors you confuse (other words colors that look alike) are common confusion colors for individuals that are red/green color deficient. Individuals that are colorblind ( a better name is color deficient) do "not" see black and white images as many people think. It is just that some colors (confusion colors) appear the same to them. I hope this helps answer your question.

Yes. There is a circle in all six pediatric test plates. Everyone, even color deficient subjects, should see one circle in three of the six pediatric test plates.

@TommyChester42 You do not need a trip to the eye doctor or monitoring. If you are color deficient, the only thing it effects sometimes is your career choice i.e. some pilots are required to pass a color vision test.

I have been to the doctor before to check how bad I was at this test and I have only gotten worst. :P

Yes it is the Ishihara test. I guess for anyone working on the railways. Seeing the difference between a red signal and green signal would be rather important. I had to pass the same test, when I applied for a job with a large telco as a wireman. Because of the wiring colour-codes used.

@SRMkay All the plates (including the boat) only screen for protan/deutan (red/green) deficiencies. Keep in mind this does not mean a person who is classified as red/green color deficient can not see red or green but that certain colors (confusion colors) may seem the same to them- ie brown may look the same as green.

I agree. The type and quality of your monitor can affect the test results. This on-line test is for screening purposes only, not a diagnosis. When in doubt, see your eye doctor.

I agree with you. The military did come up with a more practical test 50 years ago. It is called the Farnsworth Lanten. It consists of three colored lights similar to those used on airplane wings and ships to tell if either is coming toward you or away., The Army, Navy, and Coast Guard still use it, not the Air Force. It will pass people who are mildly color deficient. Approximatelyy 6% fail it compared to 8% that fail the dot test (pseudoisochromatic plate test).

ironically, I have issues with colors but I am also a graphic designer and I used to work DSL and dealt with a ton of different colored pairs of wires....wasn't that bad....i took my time and really had to look at some pairs of wires but i made it work and never messed up. There is hope, people!

Good test. I did pass.. that is test being colorblind. I only saw one shape on each the kids portion and absolutely none in the adult section. I've been tested as red/green color blind but it's nice to see I'm not alone here by the comments. Honestly, I couldn't tell the colors for the traffic light but only memorized the order, Red yellow green. Sad thing is, although I didn't find out til later in school, which explained why I always kept mixing brown and red crayons and my paintings always looked like I was on crack when I painted it.

@kimmi118 there are three primary color-sensors in every eye: red, green, and blue. Every color in the spectrum is a mixture of those three primary colors. If one of those sensors (I think cones) don't work properly, then you can't properly see that color, or any other color that depends on a mixture of that color and any of the others.

I can see all of these shapes and colours.. that is WITH my glasses on :D

Thank you for taking the on-line video color vision test. Everyone should see one object (circle, star, square) on all six to the pediatric test plates, even if you have a color vision deficiency. People with normal color vision will see 2 objects on each test plate. How many objects did you see on each test plate? Thanks again

My cousin is color blind, but I have never encountered anyone else who sees as she does: She sees yellow, pink, and gray as the same color. Everything else, she sees correctly.

@GheloPunk Sometimes color vision deficiencies are referred to as Daltonism. No, you are not sick. A color vision deficiency is not a sickness. It just means you see colors a little differently than most people.

Google colorvisiontesting and try the free color vision test at that site. The RGB colors of some monitors are out of calibration which decreases the accuracy of on-line color vision tests.

Yes, it is possible. The red component of purple is hard for protans to see. The red drops out of purple, leaving purple and blue appearing similar.

Thank god they actually highlighted the correct answers. Yes I know I'm colorblind, but I've never "seen" the answers before. I literally was just calling BS on everything because I saw nothing.

I could see the hidden shapes and the numbers (ie, I passed the test)-- however, I admit that they weren't easily discernible.

RaghlmATiger: You are correct. If you are color deficient, you should see the blue shapes due to the contrast of the object and color. If you are color normal, you should see two objects. On the second part of the test with numbers, if you are color deficient, you will not see any of the numbers.

Yes, the Nagel Anomaloscope will tell you the type and degree of color vision deficiency you have. Unfortunately, you will only find a Nagel Anomaloscope at a few colleges of optometry or reseach centers.

Thanks for the email and mentioning the Farnsworth Lantern Color Vision Test that the Army, Navy, Marine Corp, accept. The Air Force is the only service that does not accept the Farnsworth Lantern Color Vision Test. Pseudoisochromatic Color Vision Tests like this one has a failure rate of approximately 8% and the Farnsworth Lantern has a failure rate of 6% so individuals who are mildly color deficient can sometime pass it. I am an airman who was denied all special forces jobs due to the inability to read all of these dots. I never even knew that I was color blind either. Color vision has never limited me in my whole life even in school. This is why I question the tests validity in measuring functional sight relating to work. I think the military should come up with a more reliable test.

This color vision test detects protan and deutan (red/green) color vision deficiencies, not tritan deficiencies. Congenital tritanopia is extremely rare. Acquired tritanopia is normally due to an illness like multiple sclerosis or other types of neuropathy.

Can you confuse orange and brown normally? I need to test with orange and brown so I can see but I can’t find one.
