Colorado Epic Tower Climb 5.8+, Independence Monument, Grand Junction

This is The Premier Colorado Desert Tower Rock Climb & Rappel with an Astounding History dating back to 1907 and John Otto. Located in the Colorado National Monument just South of Grand Junction right off I-70, this route started off on Brittle Sandstone with scant protection for the first half of the climb but the upper two pitches cleaned up very nicely and had several points of reliable fixed protection (Bolts). The route finishes by Cranking through an overhanging section created by the Tower's Enormous Cap Stone, EPIC!

Congrats on sending Otto’s, and good job filming it rather than just presenting the same awful 1st person go pro footage that everybody else has. As far as your age in relationship to climbing, I keep Fred Beckey in mind. He was climbing 5.7s in his 90s. There’s a guy named Lee Sheftel who was climbing 5.13 in his 70s (climbed his first 5.14 at the age of 59). So I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Hey big thanks again buddy! Yes, she's strong, works in the climbing gym weekly. This intimidating adventure was her idea this time around, and it went well! I wasn't able to capture all the technical climbing and rappelling scenes, attempting to safety as you can imagine! Thanks, Karl 👍👍

What an adventure! So wonderful that you can get out and make these memories with your daughter. Another climb superbly documented. I'm 66 and just starting to climb.... trees however with an arborist's saddle and a chainsaw. perhaps I can transition to rock someday. Be safe, thanks for posting!

We've been doing this off and on for years now, I actually started filming with her to keep for our memories, and that morphed into me getting interested in editing and more advanced camera techniques. She still goes to the climbing gym weekly, so she's a capable and strong partner! Thanks again, Karl 👍
