Now that I have lived with my garden for almost 5 years, I have discovered areas that have consistent shade. With my front porch mostly shade with some part shade part sun areas, I am excited to finally get started on some solorful shade containers. Creating shade planters is all about lots of texture and color. Follow along as I do some shade gardening.

I love hostas in containers and they are perfect for shade areas. The color and texture just make the container pop!

I also have a shade zone close to my house and last years did very well for me calladiums and ferns for example. Also oxalis triangularis mijke was fantastic and provided beautiful color until winter - rich burgundy leaves with a profusion of pink little flowers. Bigger plants - hydrangea macrophylla, fatsia japonica, nandinas grow beautifully in the shade here. This year I want to try browalia and achimenes varieties as flowering plants, which don't need much sun.

How about camelia, come in espalie form to. Spider plants do well outdoors and their variegation makes them stand out in dark areas, less fusy than ferns( which I adore) and evergreen. Pots are beautiful. Happy International Women's day all.💪👄

Wathcing this again on 12/30. I’m so ready for spring. I really love the selections of your containers. I’m making a list of these! I don’t a have mush shade or suggestions but cast iron plants are very hardy and evergreen. Highly recommend!

Mountain Snow Pieris for a small shrub. Mine didn't bloom this year due to the December polar blast, but the shrub hung in there and is starting to put on new foliage now. I never had any luck with bacopa, but I think they don't really like hot and humid. And I always tried them in a morning sun, afternoon shade location. I may try again, though because it has been several years; there may be some that are improved. Silver Falls is sold as an annual, and probably is in a pot, but I had some root in about 4 years ago and it comes back for me every year as a ground cover just off my patio. It has survived several polar blast/snow/ice events. I love the way it looks with pots set into it.

Beautiful combos, as usual! 😍 Love those yellow begonias and wow, those black petunias look like velvet! I’ve not been a fan of grasses but I really like the fiber optic one you got and now I want an Angel wing begonia even more. 😁 Have never seen bacopa but how sweet. Really like the umbrella plant and the variegated Asian jasmine. Great selections, Amanda! I’m interested in your thoughts on potting soil. It’s gotten so expensive. I bought some at Costco and the StaGreen last year but they were a lot of wood chips. I bought some Sams brand last night to try it.

You could do Ferns and Hostas and any of the perennial shade plants in the pots and then just transfer to your beds in the fall. Autumn Brilliance ferns would be great. For you in your zone you could over winter them in the pots too. Just a thought.

Hi Amanda, I too love hostas. I garden in zone 6 in northeast Indiana. There are so many varieties of them that makes it so hard for me to choose. There are chartreuse colors and near white ones that will make your space pop. When you are done with them in your pots put them in your landscape or set them out as free plants for others to enjoy! Love those color combinations, I will use them in my shade garden. Happy Gardening, may Jehovah continue to bless you and all that is yours! 🙃🐞🌺🌻
