My favorite way to remember which colors have い adjective is simply this: The three primary (red, blue, yellow) and the three neutral (Black, Brown, White) :D

い i adjective - ends in "i", adjective that we know already (eg black pencil: kuroi - black (pen)) (if you remove i from adjective it becomes noun) な na adjective - adjective about which don't know yet and won't learn anytime soon の no adjective - noun turned into adjective (Nihon can be turned into Nihon no kuruma - Japanese car; Nihon no tabemono - Japanese food; Nihon no Tomodachi - Japanese friend) when linking two nouns must put no in the middle

It's interesting that I've already learnt the Kana and seeing a mix of that and english is harder to comprehend than just romanji or just Japanese script. Does anyone else have this problem?

With no used for adjectives it seems like it's still used as a possessive term. When you say nihon no kuruma it sounds like car of Japan. Maybe that's just how my pedantic brain makes sense of it. Thanks for these videos, you're a great teacher.

I love these videos, they really help reinforce what I learn from the book. I would love some additional product offerings from your series, such as flash cards and children’s workbook. I DID end up purchasing flash cards from another company. The kit came with a lot of unnecessary extras, which ended up costing me a lot of money. I also had to rearrange the order of the cards, so it would match the lesson progression. It did help in reinforcing the characters, that’s why I believe that flash card companions would be an excellent addition to the series. I live in Japan, near your old base. It’s so nice to hear from a fellow brat :-)

I'm sure most of us (if not, all) appreciate the efforts You and your Wife have put into this entire thing; from the online courses, to the Books, to the videos, and beyond that. From my own humble experience, I have found that in asking the same question more than once about something (which many people are guilty of, myself included) IS useful, in that it helps to reinforce a certain point within our minds and mindsets. And let's face it: not everyone learns at the same speed, and with the same degree of retention, and understanding. So, if it helps, thank you for being patient with us. Yeah, some of us are a little slow on the uptake...and yeah...or, HA'I! if you prefer it! Lol! - some people can be asshata-motos for what they're asking you (read that like it sounds; that's how I meant to write it.) But, one thing we have in common: we ALL like the books/videos/courses in a BIG way. Yoi shigoto o tsudzukete kudasai! We need it more, than we know! Lol!

There is something I use to remember to modify nouns it is: can you connect two nouns with out anything in the middle NO.

as I understand it, and I'm well aware my sources could be wrong, na was originally the informal infinitive of desu, and na adjectives are loan words from China.

"To" doesn't always mean "and" - sometimes it means with.

Honestly, I really like the progressive learning technique you're using, but I would have liked it, if you had put the Kanji and the full Hiragana versions of the words somewhere, because I can't always find them elsewhere online. That's just how I feel about it after 15 episodes, but I can understand that you follow the book series and most importantly that you don't want to confuse others still learning and maybe having trouble learning Hiragana... (If you even see this comment as this video is almost one and a half years old...)

Hello, I have a question about course one lesson four. In the Q&A section under point 8 it has the question: "What colour is your mothers rabbit?" One answer is "Shiro to nezumi iro desu." Is that another way to say grey? That it is mouse coloured? Thank you for the brilliant site. I have been using Rosetta Stone, just to try to dip into Japanese, but your site made it serious. After just a few days I actually understood why there was a "wa, to or no" after certain words in rosetta stone. I still use Rosetta Stone as a practice companion, but your site will be the main learning tool. Thank you, great work on the site.

I know this is a specific series but can you at some point make a video explaining やっぱり and やはり? Even my Japanese friends who speak pretty good English cannot explain it very well. There are apparently many meanings one of which is "I knew it" but I hear it being said in almost every sentence spoken between 2 Japanese people and it couldn't possibly mean that every time. ありがとう 先生ジョージ!

This is a beautiful and enlightening lesson. My first introduction to Japanese colours was from anime where certain characters are identified with certain colours. I noticed the namings do not follow the adj and noun versions as is explained in the video, but only the noun versions E.g shirohige (instead of shiroi hige) - white beard, akainu (instead of akai inu)- red dog etc. Is this because the colours are used in compound names?? I hope my question makes sense. Arigato gozaimasu.

How do u tell the difference between the particle no and adjective no And is there a chance for those to to be directly next to each other what I mean is is something like "No" , "no" possible

I have the book Genki 1, and ive been watching these videos and finding them very helpful. But I was wondering if it would be beneficial to get the Japanese from zero books as well? id love to follow along with these in the books. but is that necessary having already acquired the Genki 1 book.

So I’ve bought Japanese from zero 1-5, kanji from zero 1. My question is: can I pas the N5 test by using them or do I need even more knowledge from future books to pass it? Also just finished the first book, had so much fun learning from it. Now I’m going through the videos.

(All Japanese will be written in romaji, due to the fact I am using a American keyboard. Sorry) A tip I use to remember the "NO" adjective: Think of it as "No" as the "No" partial for "Possession", like "Nihon no kuruma" as "A car belonging to Japan" which would be "A Japanese car".

For translating stations or airports, do I have to include 'no' as well? Ex. Kansai Airport = Kansai no Kunko

Great videos George. Your adjectives video really cleared up the confusion to me. I was going to mention why Midori and Murasaki and the other colors weren't mentioned as I adjectives. So if a word has an I adjective that isn't attached to a consanant, that word is an I adjective?

Still struggling with the difference between wa and ga. Asked many language exchange partners and none of them know themselves.

I started learning Japanese two days ago and i'm already half way through the first course. I really need to take a break. It's getting hard to follow.

I was a bit confused but I think the following sentence works. Shiroi kuruma wa watashi no desu, demo, kuroi kuruma ga anata no desu ka? Which I think means "The white car is mine, but is the black car yours?". I wasn't sure if you could use more than one "wa" in a sentence so I switched it for "ga" and google translate seemed to agree XD.

Sometimes in anime they say after a word, ´kure´. I know that you can say (for example) たすけて , but they often use たすけてくれ. Is it possible that ´kure´ is the informal version of ください ?

Man, I am really feeling the disparity between learning this with and without your book. You bring up many things and say, "you should know this word!" but you never went over it in your previous videos on this playlist, so I keep writing what I can down even though I have no idea. It's hard not having the money to pay for textbooks; it's getting very hard to keep up with this.
