In this video I'm presenting one of my all time favourite pedals - the Colorsound Power Boost. David Gilmour used the pedal on classic Pink Floyd albums, including Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals.
The Power Boost is a transparent pre-amp designed to inderact with your pickups and tube amp.
Read the in-depth feature on the Colorsound Power Boost here

Brilliant! I love seeing you on screen talking and showing :) As to the content I finally understand how to set my Vick Overdriver, I left a comment on your recent PB review page about how much was pedal overdriving OD vs the amp being boosted and overdriving by itself. Now I know you have the PB with the master volume and you set all these clips to the same 3 o'clock Volume (gain) setting - right, back to my board to get a hold of this..... Thankyou
@lancasterkb7266
@lancasterkb7266 6 лет назад
Richard McEntee how do you like the overdriver?
@mcentee2
@mcentee2 6 лет назад
Ah well, there lies my query really - I am a home player, so am finding the PB/OD as circuit/effect quite difficult to pin down and use. I probably never play at the necessary volume with a loud punching amp to get the most out of the pedal, for me it is just too spiky for pedal OD tones. I have A/B next to a BD-2w and I always am coming back to the BD-2 fitting me and my environment much better - still on the uncompressed and "bright" side, but the OD works better. The Vick itself is probably the closest to the original, I haven't compared but just what I have read, I have had the Buffalo as well, but not at the same time, as well as a clone a few years back - all of them gave me the same experience.

Great video Bjorn, loved this new format, just a suggestion: while you're playing would it be possible to show your pedal settings? That would save time from going back to the beginning of the video to hear you say the settings, and would be just more intuitive. Anyway, loved it!

Hi Bjorn, Amazing playing as always - I love your videos and insight into the tones. Is this pedal similar to a big muff? I have a new Ram's head Big Muff and don't know whether buying on is a little bit of a waste of money when I could buy a chorus or a flanger instead. I just love the tones you get out of it in this video!!
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 года назад
Thank you! The Power Boost is a booster and overdrive. You can get some very convincing fuzz tones from it but it's not a Big Muff. I mainly use it for clean boost or as a very mild overdrive complimenting the tone of the amp.

Thank you so much for this and your work over the years, Bjorn. Quick question I cannot find the answer to anywhere: why did David use two CE-2s AFTER the split in his rig on the Wall tour instead of just one before the split? Did he have them set slightly differently in order to add an even more intense randomness in his modulation or something? I have never seen ANYONE address this.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 6 лет назад
The two CE2s were added on the last leg of the Wall tour in 1981. I've never seen any sources telling why he did that but my guess would be to create a wider stereo spread, much like what he did in 1994.

Hi Bjorn. You are immortal as for generations to come will use your teachings. Thank you. Quick question. Please solve a dispute. Does the distortion boost go before or after the Muff? I have a Tube Screamer and a Blues Driver to do this on my board.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 5 лет назад
David always had his boosters after the high gain pedals but it all depends on what pedals you use, what amp you have and obviously, what tones you're looking for. I find that mids oriented and compressed pedals like the TS, often makes fuzz and Muffs sound dark and almost choked but it can be a nice combo on more mids scooped amps like Fender and Vox. David's using boosters more like EQs. He doesn't add much volume or gain but rather character and tone. Placing the booster first, will add more gain. Placing it after, will add more character and volume.

Hi Bjorn, I love your channel, brilliant guitar playing, and Gilmour expertise! Have you tried the ColorSound “Aussie” Power Boost? Do you think the “Aussie” would it help create that Gilmour sound with a Big Muff Ram’s Head and an Electric Mistress? Asking because I have a chance to buy the “Aussie” version for a pretty fair price…but if I should get this version you are using then Ill hold out. Thanks
@gilmourishofficial

Thanks! The Aussie is very similar to the stock Power Boost so we're talking nuances here. Depending on how you'll be using a Power Boost I'd go for a 18V for more headroom and smoother breakup.

Hello Bjorn! Thanks for all your great advice, you have heavily influenced by gear! (All for the better :D ) What boost would you recommend for the bedroom setup? I would still like to keep that vintage tone as as my goal-tone right now is the 1977-tour. I have been longing to get the Powerboost but I'm afraid I wont be able to get the full tone out of it. I'm right now playing at a Vol10 on my Blackstar Ht5 aswell as my guitar and I've already been given complaints from my neighbor upstairs. How would I go about getting that vintage tone while keeping the volume down? Best Regards, Adam

You nailed man. All RU-vid power boost demos on "od mode" sound farty, but it's barely noticiable on this one, (even been a 9v version). I hear lots of harmonics on your clean sound. Do you have your amp set clean or just at the verge of breaking up? I'm going to build a clone for my '73 dr-103 looking for a broken clean kind of sound, but I' ve got the impression that this one works best on the extremes, (clean tone shaper/od), and not so much in the middle with that abrupt decay I noticed in most examples...
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 5 лет назад
The Colorsound is hard to record properly because you need to push it hard to avoid those fizzy overtones. I've set the Reeves/Hiwatt to clean with a bit of hair from the pre-amp. Hard to notice but you can hear that slight compression when you dig into the strings. How hot you should set the pre-amp obviously depends on the speakers and pickups.

@gilmourishofficial

A Power Boost is perhaps best used as a booster on these amps, while the BD2 and Crayon which both has a bit more mids and compression works better as overdrives.

Yes, the Hot Wax feature the Hot Tubes, which is very similar to the Power Boost. It was originally released by EHX in the 70s, providing a boost for darker tube amps. The Hot Wax is an excellent dual overdrive pedal for Gilmour's tones.

Question for you Bjorn, what’s your favorite vibe type pedal to recreate David’s tones all around that really fits the bill. I’m looking for a good vibe that can cover a lot of his vibe tones.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 6 лет назад
As you may know, David didn't really use the UniVibe that much. It's mainly featured on Dark Side on the Moon bt other than that. Not much. I have two favourites. The Electronic Orange Moon Vibe, which has a vintage tone and it fits high gain pedals very well. And there's the VibeMachine from Dry Bell. Small foot print and an amazing tone. One of my all time favourite vibe pedals is the Dunlop RotoVibe. It can do both UniVibe and phaser, which means you'll be able to cover David's Dark Side and WYWH tones.

So am I right in assuming that, in general, Dave was most likely using this pedal less for the pedal's own distortion, but more to slam into the preamp valves of his Hiwatts to get them distorting? Since (as far as I can tell), the volume knob is more like a volume cut and the volume at full matches the output of the original 18V ones which even with the "volume" (gain) turned all the way off, it was still boosting your signal by some crazy amount.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 11 месяцев назад
He didn't have the master volume version. That one came later so the old Power Boost only had bass, treble and volume. The volume is a gain control, controling the amount of overdrive or distortion. David, unlike Hendrix and Towsend, had his amps set clean or at the very edge of break up and used pedals, like the Power Boost, Fuzz Face and Big Muff to get his overdrive and fuzz tones.
@Smurfman256
@Smurfman256 9 дней назад
I don't think I worded my original comment in a way that really made sense, but now since I have both a Tru-Fi Colordriver and a Hi-Tone DR504, I've figured out quite a few things: I'm aware the original pedal didn't have a master volume, but on the versions with a MV, the knob on max gives you the same output level as the old versions sans MV. Read: absolutely unusable as a toggle on/off pedal and it sends so much signal boost into the amp (even with the gain knob at minimum) that it's driving the preamps hard even if you turn them down. The volume knob on the originals appears to use a logarithmic sweep which is why you get that infamous sweep of "nothing... nothing... nothing...light drive, oop now it's fuzz" on the old units. The clones from Tru Fi appear to use a linear taper for the gain so the "heavy drive" sound appears to be right around noon on that pedal. But since it's so reactive to your guitar's volume knob, I just leave mine dimed and use my guitar's volume knob as a gain control. What sounds closest to the 70's era Floyd records to me is if you crank the treble knob on the pedal up pretty high (at least 3 o'clock) and have the treble and presence knobs on the Hiwatt no higher than 9:30 and set gain to taste on the guitar's volume knob. That sound, paired with some IRs of an actual WEM Starfinder 4x12 cab with actual Fane Crescendo speakers, immediately gets you the sound. And those speakers are the last 5% of the sound since not only do they have a ludicrous frequency response for a guitar speaker (30hz all the way to *16khz*!), they also have two big ass spikes in the 2.2kHz and 4.5kHz areas. The latter of which explains why David is constantly feeding back in the higher harmonics in those old bootleg recordings.

Dvaid Gilmour did use a Fuzz Face to record the solo so no, you don't need it. He did however on 70s live shows, use the Power Boost both for ovedrive and for boosting the fuzz. personally I don't think there's anything like the original, which is still being made, but there are several great sounding clones out there. Check out some of them in this buyer's guide on my site www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=262 As for the settings - it depends very much on your amp and pickups as this pedal interact with both. The tones shown here in this clip is a good start.

I have an older one with just a hole on the side and you have to use something sharp to poke it open.

I miss the first guitar solo sound on shine on......

Hi! I am going to buy my first electic guitar, but hesitating with these 4 knids of guitar: fender artist eric clapton strat (heard that midboost can get gilmour's tone), fender artist edge strat (thought that pickups are similar to gilmour custom shop strat), and suhr classic pro (sss?/ssh?). Could anyone give me some advice please? My dreaming tone is shine on you crazy diamond(pt 6-9) and solo of comfortably numb, so which guitar should I buy, or is there any better choice in same price level as the above 4 guitars? Many thanks! (sorry my english is not very good)

OK, so let me be very honest. A guitar alone can't give you THAT tone but I'm sure you knew that already. You can get David Gilmour's tones with any guitar as long as you know what pedals and amps to combine with it... Now, obviously a Stratocaster with single coils will get you close but my best tip is to visit your local guitar shop and try a bunch of guitars - Strats, Tele, Les Pauls... anything. Get the guitar that you're most comfortable with. Check out this feature for some tips I've writted down for choosing the right pedals for different amps www.gilmourish.com/?p=7115

Can you comment on your V30 speakers? Are they similar to FANE Crescendo? and what other speakers would work well for this sound ?
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 4 года назад
They're much darker than the Fanes, with less headroom. The Fanes are brighter, with tons of headroom, which goes very well with a Hiwatt. V30s are typical for that tight Marshall tone. The G12H is probably something inbetween, with a bit more headroom and a bit more high mids sparkle.

@@gilmourishofficial my friend has a fender combo with a g-12 k100 celestion open back. Very bright and it seems to have a 3D quality. Would this sound good for Gilmore tones ?

Trying to figure out where David had this in his effect chain. Did it change over the years? Saw a picture of it before his fuzz face. That seems backward. Then references to it being after all the overdrives/muffs/fuzz
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 года назад
He is first seen using one in early 1972 and some images indicated that it was placed before the fuzz pedal. That might have been the case but it's also hard to judge by those images how the pedals were ligned up. He might have used it without the fuzz but he might also have found it to give the fuzz more gain, which is what happen when you boost in front. However, from 1973 and up to present, with the Tube Driver, he's always boosted after the high gain pedals. Keep in mind though that it's not actually volume or gain boost but rather tone enhancement much like an EQ, with very mild settings.

Is that a real Fender Stratocaster you are using there? What's with the binding on the neck? And the head-stock shape looks a little strange for a Fender. Just wondering about your guitar.

Yes indeed. The neck is a Fender CIJ 65 reissue. More here www.bjornriis.com/my-gear/1stratocaster/

Hi Bjorn, Not sure how much of a difference it makes but do you know if David Gilmour used the 18v original version or the later 9v version? Thanks.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 3 года назад
David used the original late 60s 18V model between 1972-77. They have a hair more headroom compared to the 9V.

@@gilmourishofficial Thanks for confirming. A couple more questions if you don't mind. Do you know if on the time solo recording if David just used a fuzz face or if he also used the power boost after the fuzz face. Also, do you know if the time rhythm parts are the power boost or just a fuzz face with the guitar volume turned down? Thanks.
@Coopersboy7
@Coopersboy7 3 года назад
Idk what Bjorn thinks, but IMO, the rhythms and solo are Fuzz Face. I don’t think he used a powerboost as a booster for fuzz much in studio but I could be wrong.

Is it worth buying this one if one already has the Throbak od/boost? Or are they so similar? Cheers
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 6 лет назад
The ThroBak has more headroom and less gain. I also think the gain character sounds better on this Colorsound and other clones like the Electronic Orange Bananaboost. The Throbak has a nice twangy clean tone and some extra cool features. Depends on how much you want THAT tone. They are very similar...

The Throbak has more headroom and a couple of extra features. It's perhaps a bit more modern sounding and, in my opinion, better as a clean booster.

wow I just found this one minutes ago.was confused by the title...and yeah...this is it..the worthy Colorsound PB which with the Proco Rat are the best sounding distortion pedal I've ever tried...and the weird thing is the fact that I used it to achieve Gilmour's tone on tracks like Dogs from animals for instance and all that 70's stuffs in general...and I just discover by this video that indeed Gilmour used it in that records....I feel glad and some kinda pride to guess it just by ears...and guessed the right pedal...I've always thought his main sound came from the combination of P2 from P.Cornish and the EHX Pi...this is definitly one of my favourite pedal...I'm not kinda guy using a lot....but Can't go on anything without adding to the chain a TS9 it adds a creamy flavor...and I use the BK Butler for neck pickup bluesy Gilmourish tone like On an Island ..another brick etc...now I'm using the line 6 Helix they did a good work on a lot of pedals...but I add the physical ones I own...the combination is great sounding and very pleasing.
