Sergio Rodrigues Bjorn or Mr. Gilmour himself. 🙂 Hey Mick and Dan, why don’t you ask Davey G to come on the show. 😉 As a side note, I think this show goes to show that almost every guitarist wants the same thing: to physically feel the power of a hugely powerful amplifier, be it Marshall, Boogie or Hiwatt - or anything else.
Come on, boys blend the power booster after a Big Muff into that Hiwatt. Add a mistress for some vintage Gilmour! Love Floyd, or hate them, DG and Phil Taylor are masters of guitar tone. Absolutley have Bjorn Riis from Norway on the show. This was entertaining.
... and the local gendarmes will be at your bedroom door before the end of the first twelve bar blues. “Disturbing the peace? Surely not I officers...” 😂
Hey, man. With a Two Notes Captor, anything's a bedroom setup. ...Yes, I'm aware that it's not the same as having speakers shoving air so hard it feels like a cushion of sound behind you, but some of us live in 1B1B apartments and can't play without either attenuation or load boxes.
Thanks to Fryette Power Station, I use that setup in my home office room. Sounds awesome. But of course not quite the same as it would be with more dBs
I used to play in a band (in my former life as a drummer) with a guy who had a 100 watt Hi Watt. It was magical. Sounded as big as God. Most of the sound guys in the smaller to mid-sized clubs we were playing hated it. We were generally criticized for being entirely too loud (our bass player had the big Ampeg SVT rig with the 8 x 10 cab, a mid-driven turbo rat for his clean tone into a quite-driven Muff for his dirty tone). I'll never forget the tones that guy used to pull out of that Hi Watt, though. Simply astounding.
@@mathewrileymusic - our local music scene largely consisted of clubs with ridiculous PA systems for their size and there were no local ordinances in those days to limit the noise floor in the bar district. As long as the sound guys could get the drums and vocals out over the amps without massive feedback issues, nobody really cared how loud it was. That was 15 or more years ago, now, though. I'm sure things have changed since then.
Yes, yes, yes!! Don't fear the haters - they will always be around ... you do you; hard to argue with a Davey G episode, copiloted by Bjorn from Gilmourish ... That would be such an EPIC episode. Really enjoyed this one, though ... muchas gracias! :)
Anyone looking for authentic HiWatt clones amps and cabinets look at Hi-Tone. I’m a Hiwatt junkie from way back. The Hi-Tone is as good as it gets. Hand wired point to point military spec wiring, nos mustard caps. Their Eclipse cabinet is based on the WEM cabs made famous by Gilmour. I can’t stress enough at just how good Hi-Tone’s products are.
Yep! I’ve got their DR-504 repro and a 2x12 cab with their Fane purple repros. The interior is a work of art. The 504 compresses and thickens a little lower on the master volume than the 103, but it can still get fierce. :) I often run it into a PowerStation when I feel like rockin’ out sans gain pedals.
David Kieltyka Clayton’s work is second to none. These amps are truly a work of art and precision. Picture perfect wiring. Even the cabinets are wired with detail and an artistic approach. Good as it gets to me.
The Who Live for decades, King Crimson in their prime, some Rush (including Moving Pictures), almost all of Floyd, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, it's the amp of classic prog. Even Page took it for a spin for a few years. A lot of them had their own built for them with their own personal spin, but they all still have THAT character.
although I think the fuchs thing or another dumble clone would add fuel to the spending fire. Dr Z would also make it interesting as they are super touch sensitive.
So after watching this I fired up my Hi-Tone (Hiwatt repro) 50 watter, with a Homebrew Germania 44 (OC44 germanium transistor) followed by a Magnetic Solar Bender via a Gibson SG Special. Holy bleepin’ bleep! I had to dial down the master volume a bit to keep the house from shaking, but what a sound! I’d never properly used the Germania in full-range boost/overdrive mode before ‘cuz it always drove amps into sounding overcompressed…but I’d never tried this with the Hi-Tone. No compression this time, just huge and loud. Even with the guitar vols at ~4 there’s a bit of crunch from the pedal along with an almost acoustic hi-fidelity from the guitar. Yow! Kick on the fuzz and the sound thickens and just sings. Turn up the guitar vols and it’s the closest thing to playing at stadium levels that I’ve ever experienced at a non-life-threatening volume. So cool! Thanks, guys, for pushing me to explore the possibilities of my own gear!
I'm wanting either their custom lowatt or the dg 50, do you think with the master volume I can get good overdriven tones without killing my family lol? I'm assuming I'll need some od pedals to make happen but would be nice if just the master volume can allow it.
@@benjaminfowler4513 The Hiwatt preamp circuit will crunch nicely at manageable volume if you turn up the channel volume pot and turn down the master. Try ~3:00 on the channel vol. With either a Lowatt or the Hi-Tone Gilmour you’d need to use an attenuator to run the master vol high enough that the power section compresses some. That’s where the amps really sing. Alternately set the master in the 10:00-11:00 range, if you can, and use a compressor pedal to kinda/sorta emulate the “turned up master” sound. Any medium gain soft clipping dirt pedal oughta be able to do much the same thing.
So, much like the Stratocaster, the original pedal manufacturers got it right the first time around. And louder is better. Also, as the owner of an all original 1974 WEM Dominator MkIII, I don't need to be told how good their speakers and cabs were, but I don't think we should tell other people as it will drive up the prices, and I haven't bought up all the old stock yet. ;0)
I know this is 5 years ago .but it just happened that i found last week an original colorsound overdriver black hammered .and im over the moon .omg i cant belive the boost and the huge overdrive tone.👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🎸🎸🌹🌹❤❤❤👍👍👍
Mick at 35:34 totally hits the nail on the head, describes exactly my impression of the Colorsound circuit from watching this, and also totally pegs me on not meshing with fuzz/treble boosters as they've been too harsh/gnarly/frizzly compared to mild overdrive. From this video, the Colorsound circuit appeals to me way more than any distortion or fuzz tone I've ever heard. Must try one for myself. Thank you guys! Also, never censor your "lightbulb moments" as we're feeling what you're feeling! Sharing in gear joy is precisely why I watch every TPS even when it's tone and gear that I don't connect with.
Nice! I built a HiWatt clone for myself way back in the 80's from scavenged HiFi bits and old TV parts. I wish I had never sold it now but it weighed an absolute tonne and rack gear was just coming out and I was on board that slim stereo rack train something shocking.
YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!! Been waiting a long time for this! As someone who actually saw David Gilmour perform live at Pompeii two years ago you can probably guess how much I loved today's video!!!! Perfect example of Gilmour's rhythm tones from the mid 70s
We //might// delve a little deeper into Gilmour’s world. Might. Trying not to do that however because it’s a certain fail with inevitable abuse from Gilmorons. So we’ll just enjoy the tones and say you don’t have to be Gilminded to enjoy them too. :0)
That Pedal Show yeah you were saying that before, a specific artist episode brings out nitpicking from the diehard fans (I’m one of them!). Still this was hugely enjoyable!
That Pedal Show yeah you were saying that before, a specific artist episode brings out nitpicking from the diehard fans (I’m one of them!). Still this was hugely enjoyable! Also props for your correct facts!
That Pedal Show when you started talking about his setups on different albums at the start I was rubbing my hands together waiting for you to make a mistake but you certainly showed me!!!! Also greetings from Galway Ireland!
Hey guy love this episode. Im a big David Gilmour fan. I know he had a Color sound on his board. There is a Clone to this pedal that I have and it sounds fantastic. I wasn't able to get my hands on an Original so I purchased this one. It is a Buffalo FX POWER BOOSTER. It was modeled after the Color Sound and has very good ratings. If you get the chance check out some of there Pedals. The Buffalo M-1 Fuzz is another one that is great. Cheers Guys, Love what you doChad Bagln
I just got my new Tru fi Colordriver. I love it! It sounds amazing. Packs a gigantic punch. Makes my fender practice amp blast as if it's a Hiwatt. Perfect if you're trying to nail those Gilmour tones.
Hiwatt sounded killer. Check out the Mesa Boogie Rectoverb 25. Separate Reverb Controls on Rear fro each channel. It goes from Fender-like Cleans to A Fire Breathing Dragon. Most versatile Amp on the planet. Dan - whats the Brand and Model # of the Pedalboard that you & Mick are now using ???
When Dan goes and crouches to look at the amp, it’s like Lord Of The Rings! Hadn’t realized how much the main shot was foreshortening things! Dan, you’ve become a hobbit - or maybe Gollum (“my precioussss”)
Awesome video as normal guys. I👍🎸. Friday are not the same without your videos. For me Hiwatt amp with Orange power boost is the best guitar tone ever. Chris from custom pedal boards is such a cool guy who makes awesome boards.
Oh man! I had a 70’s Hiwatt 100 watt with a 4x12 cab and it was sooooo loud. I couldn’t play a pub gig with without taking the back wall of the establishment out! Had to sell it in the end as it was too loud for me but it was a great great amp. I just wasn’t playing the Colston Hall, Bristol! Great show guys, look forward to Fridays and your latest offering. 🤘🏻🎸👍🤘🏻🎸👍🤘🏻👍🤘🏻👍🎸
To offer a solution to the volume issue, try switching to a less efficient speaker. A 3dB reduction in speaker efficiency will “halve” the power of your amp without changing the headroom of your amp. 6dB will cut it in half again, etc.
I would recommend looking into Reeves Amps www.reevesamps.com/amplifiers/custom-50-and-custom-100/ They offer a power scaling option which may help you get THAT tone but at reasonable levels of volume.
Daniel, My newer Macari’s PowerBoost has nowhere near that gain. It amplifies noise at that level that yours does on 2! What can be done (Modded) by Macari’s or someone like You, to make it as ballsy as the old ones? As Mick says “Why is it so LOUD?” It just is isn’t gonna cut it for me. I need the full gain version as I don’t need a safety master. So do you think that it can be = or modded Correctly, to have the original volume/gain boost? It’s not working well to have to crank both volumes up 80% to get that dirt. I dig this episode as this is Where I Live Boys!! Love, Light, Loyalty- ✌🏼🥸🙏🏼🎸🎶11:11®️Thomas Adams
I know a way to do it at lower volume . . . DITCH THAT 12AX7 IN V1!!! Use 12AU7 in V1 of Hiwatt - use 12k Cathode resistor on 1st stage / 4.7k on 2nd stage of V1 You will thank me forever . . . And not just any 12AU7 either - a NOS Amperex / GE - or Telefunken if you want the greatest clean sound you've ever heard
From this article’s recommendation ( tonereport.com/blogs/tone-tips/david-gilmour-tone-analysis-dogs-animals-1977 ) I built my own (internally 18vdc) Colorsound Power Boost with a BC169C transistor using the excellent Fuzz Dog’s Pedal Parts “Vintage Pow!” kit ( shop.pedalparts.co.uk/Vintage_Pow_-_Colorsound_Overdriver__Power_Boost/p847124_7448353.aspx ). I broke out the Fender Super Twin to test it against what your showing, and yup it has the same gain structure. So if you are looking for a Power Boost I highly recommend this kit.
Man, great episodes! Fun, great tones and interesting facts. Thanks for introducing the True-fi Colordriver Dan! I think this will be the fuzz pedal I m going to get!
The EV cab was pointing at your ankles - but what about Simon? Has the blurred vision stopped yet? I'd get more insurance for when your Hiwatt arrives.
Yea, that's why the rock stars are deaf. Were gonna need a couple of those. But it needed to be loud back then, PA systems mostly sucked. By the 80's it was all fake stacks and miking an amp backstage. Now it's a lot of DI and modeling through wicked PA's with MANY inputs and outputs.
I'd love to see one of those power boost clones into the 1987x Marshall/ Hiwatt /Super reverb, all together and individually! Oh maybe the RevivalDrive too and a tube screamer/Klon just as a reference to compare. And as always great playin' and great sounds guys!
THROBAK, finally, ever since i saw Andy on proguitarshop demo the overdrive/boost in 2009 i wanted one ,finally got it 2015 as well as the strange master treble booster , so damn good
Yeah! I've got Fuzz Haze and it's the best sounding germanium fuzz I've ever heard! Dunno why thatpedalshow never tried one of it (?) but it's definitely worth it.
@@Krzyzy670 Throbak don't seem to get enough credit for their stuff. The Overdrive/Boost is probably the one I'd get it I had the $. The Buffalo FX Power Booster also seems rad, but it's more like a faithful reproduction. Throbak have been a little creative with their one. The Strangemaster has germanium/silicon options, yeah? I'm looking for a silicon solution to my TB needs. Atm I am looking at a Daredevil Silver Solo. I own a D*A*M Red Rooster clone but with my rig, it sounds more like a dirty boost or mild ge Fuzz. I want ott Treble Booster toan! Germanium is a pain in the bottom
I'm going to say that the quest is doomed to begin with because of one crucial component. Not unlike tube amps, human ears also sound better when pushed with higher volume ;)
The more scientific term is called the Fletcher-Munson curve. Basically the EQ and sensitivity to certain frequenties of the ear changes depending on sound pressure. You can find more on this here if you'd like more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-loudness_contour
I wanna see a video of you guys getting that amp down to different levels of “reasonable” volume, recording all of it, leveling the volume (in post) and letting us compare the sounds. That equal loudness curve does a whole lot to your perception of the sound.
The four volumes on Pete's amp was not a mod that was the original Hiwatt design one volume for each input. Reeves changed it to the two channel four input design in 68 or 69
Ah yes. The one that got away. The first pedal I bought, although it may have been the second, was a Colorsound Overdriver in 1974. Sold it in 1980 because I'd just got a '76 Marshall & thought that I didn't need pedals anymore. D'Oh! I used to run mine into a solid state 30 Watt amp with a 12” speaker, and the crazy volume thing used to happen in spades. Fortunately the amp used to have 4 inputs, so I’d run the guitar straight into one channel, run a cable out of that channel’s second input to Overdriver, then back into the second channel. Then I could get the clean and dirty volumes into the same County.
not even a full minute into the video and I am already laughing!!! :D The look of pain on Mick's face and the look of euphoria on Dan's... priceless!! Hahahaha
Now we're cookin with fire! Just about to hit play, been waiting for this one. Nothing compares to my throwbak overdrive and the rest of the Throbak pedals are just as cool. Only other pedal I have that is just as awesome but a totally different beast is my nobels odr-1. Bring it!
You've just named my two most desired boost/drive pedals. Preparing to sell a bunch of others so I can get the Throbak and the Nobels. I thought about the Wampler Paisley Deluxe but the Nobels pedal they based one side on is not the ODR-1, right? Throbak are the bomb.
@@mattgilbert7347 Not sure what the paisley is based on, haven't tried one but it would be hard to beat the odr for rythem sounds. I put a ts9 after it for leads which makes your solo jump right out because the odr boosts the low mids and the ts9 mids are higher. I have the throbak next in the chain, it has less mids than both but seems the most amp like. I like it for rythem and then boost it with the ts9 for leads.
I owned a 50 watt Hiwatt for years, and it also has gobs of headroom. I assume that it has less headroom that the 100 watt, but still more than other amps I've played. And it sounds great! Maybe check one of those out if you want to add Hiwatt to the TPS backline!
Fantastic show. Cue clip of Gilmour saying nothing quite sounds like playing through a large amp where you can lean back against the sound! Have a Colorsound Overdriver and low-powered Hiwatt style amp at home. Sounds great, but nothing like the DR103/Colorsound combo!
FINALLY. FINALLY. You guys live in the land of Hiwatts and you have never owned one??? Unbelievable. Yes. You must have one in your collection. Get a proper SE4123 (ported 4x12 with Fanes) speaker for it, though. Get 2 if you want the truest biblical experience. \m/
I have had my Hiwatt custom100 for over 35 years. Mine is the late seventies Two input one. With normal and brilliant channels which not able to do the input jumping. Anyway. Speaking of trying to find a way to use it these days at a lower volume. I see what has been my solution for few months now behind you in the video on your shelf. It’s the Fryette Power Station. I put mine through a Power Station and it helps tremendously to keep my sound at a much lower volume. It may not be completely transparent but I don’t feel I’m not losing much. Although I’m afraid I found this solution about 30 years too late as I do suffer tinnitus greatly. Might be something to try out.
The Page Hiwatt mod adds an extra gain stage, from an otherwise unused half of a 12AX7, along with an extra control, named “Balance” for some reason, to dial it in. Zero on the Balance knob is unity gain, and turning it up gradually adds in the extra stage. Kinda like having a bullt-in overdrive pedal. There was a footswitch to toggle it on & off too. BTW I’ve been on Gilmour’s barge too! Family connections. :) Also, the Townshend Hiwatts have a Vox Top Boost-based tone stack. No idea why Pete wanted a separate volume pot for each input when he only used one of ‘em.
I had a Colorsound Overdriver without the master volume... I stood on it during a Battle of the Bands in Birmingham in 1985... clean sound to full on through a Marshall Stack ... it was like a bomb going off and the audience just laughed at us. I then swapped it for an ordinary overdrive with a volume knob... rats!
I did exactly the same with a Colorsound pedal that someone gave to me. I sold it for next to nothing not knowing what it might be worth. Silly me. The guy I sold it to laughed at me after I sold it to him.
You really need to play the Hiwatt alongside a Yamaha RA-200 (or RA-100) rotating speaker cabinet, the Hiwatt is pure mids and the Yamaha fills in the bass and treble frequencies quite wonderfully. You guys would be my heroes if you could make that happen :)
Dude I just got my first tube amp at 29 yes old after playing guitar for 20 yrs. So whenever I see TPS I think to myself. WHYYYY DIDDDD IIIII NEVERRRR EVERRRR GETTT INTOOO THISSSS EARLIER!!!!!!
If an alien comes down from outer space and asks, "what is an electric guitar?", I will assume someone put something really freaky in my drink the previous night.
I need to enroll in Solid State Circuitry 101, I reckon. Transistors and/or opamps and/or diodes and/or hard/soft clipping... My head is as fuzzy as them there great sounds! That was fun!
This is so good. I have a Hiwatt Lead50r, but it’s not as near as sweet as the Custom 100. On the Overdriver side, you should try the Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest, so nice
Its going to be so much fun running all of your pedals through that amp! Its a bummer that the pedals were not that great into the lower wattage amp though. The sound on young lust/have a cigar makes so much more sense to me now... He must've been using a power boost on those recordings!
The Hero’s Journey was his all-embracing metaphor for the deep inner journey of transformation that heroes in every time and place seem to share, a path that leads them through great movements of separation, descent, ordeal, and return. This has been the heroes journey...”
Just stuck a sound meter app on my phone.Obviously you don't know what the calibration is like but I've just hit 110db with the DR103 master vol at about the 8pm position ie barely off zero. Epic!
