Quick comment/question. How could a U.S. serviceman bring back/keep his sidearm and not have to turn it in to the appropriate depot/office/station at the conclusion of his service time? Great Video.

My uncle got to take home his M1 carbine after the war, things were different then...
@rds978

My uncle came back with a Japanese rifle and his colt pistol. My recollection of what my uncle said was that when he was turning in his weapons nobody asked him for his side arm, so he just kept it. He made it sound like a lot of his friends also walked off with their pistols.

It was not uncommon at the time for officers to be allowed to purchase their sidearm when discharged.

@@JayneCobbsBunk a lot of this happened during the first world war lot of guys didn't turn their pistols in I don't think that was so during the second war because if that was the case they received letter from there commanding officer just like the German weapons

My question is..If he was issued the 1911and then brought it back home instead of turning it in. You be stealing Government property? Maybe they were allowed to do that..

No one really cared after the war. The conflict was over and the only real thoughts were to get home. Father brought a few home in 1946.

WOW, really!? This man is very uneducated or has a death wish in the very irresponsible way he dangerously handles firearms, and I should know, as a range officer and firearms instructor, I see idiots like this all the time. 4-basic rules a firearm ownership: 1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. 2. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. 3. Be certain of your target and what's beyond it. 4. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.

They didn't call the grips "plastic" yet. Grips were made from "celluloid" before Polyvinyl chloride was invented.

I carried several GI 1911s in the 80s in the military, they really were horrible, horrible sights , horrible trigger, horrible accuracy and should have been dumped out of service decades before.

I have a lot of families who indicate that "dad" kept his sidearm or m-1 carbine after the war was over. If US citizens could buy surplus weapons after the war, why couldn't the GIs

@@thomaswhiteman4261 Negative. You aren't just sticking your US Government issued M1 Carbine or 1911 in your duffel bag and trotting home when the war was over. And does your name happen to be Thomas Whiteman... or are you forging Toms RU-vid account?
