Dimitri Chirvêches no, it's actually a good thing, lots of people do this kind of thing on cz's and other guns after market to make them more reliable, but it will make the trigger pull heavy that's about it

@@DC2022 I don't think you would have a problem as it doesn't make the firing pin go any deeper. My department once had problems with Glocks not firing Black Hills 45 ACP ammo, because they had harder primers. Our Colts and Sigs (this was a LONG time ago) would fire them just fine, so I would think having a good primer strike would be beneficial. Then again, I'm not an engineer or anything, so I very well could be wrong.

My Agency used to do this when we still carried S&W 65's. The instructor would pull the hammer back and stick a pencil down the barrel. If you just lightly tap the trigger enough to drop the sear but not holding it down the internal safety would stop the hammer from going all the way forward and nothing would happen. Hold the trigger and it would stick the pencil in the ceiling. Was just a fun way of showing the new recruits that the revolver did indeed have a safety (other than the one between their ears ) and yes Im old LOL

I picked a Star BM in 9mm for concealed carry and it's one of the nicer small pistols I've shot. Doesn't like cheap aluminum cased ammo but other than that it just keeps banging away. Absolutely love it.

The spanish make great weapons, star particularly, extremely good firearm!

They suffered from bad workmanship, mainly the material and the heat treating, and the customer support when you needed replacement parts, like firing pins (broke easily) or extractors.

The best and known worldwide spanish weapon has to be the CETME rifle model C, known nowadays as the G3 rifle

I bought my Star 30M here in Canada at Marstar in 2016, but in 15 years it was the first and last one that I had seen here, they are extremely hard to find, model 28 is a bit more common but 30s almost impossible to find

@@ZMOA2006 I loved mine. The day I sold it to move to Canada was a sad day (many guns went that day). I would buy another one in a heart beat. Not the most glamorous looking pistol, but man, what a work horse.

Very interesting. A South African here. My mom has a STAR mod 30 PK and I never realized its capabilities. Great to know there is a real banger in her possession. As for myself, I have an HK VP70Z that I inherited. Those double-feed magazines are incredible.

@@simonmaguire5250 The stoner gas system was pretty innovative, and that's only about 60 years old. The G11 and AN-94 date back to the '80s and '90s respectively, and were both very innovative (if not entirely practical, nor economical).

@@graeme3023 I believe they largely fixed the cook-off problem by re-formulating the propellant, but the major issue was that the rifle was too expensive and complex to be practical as a general-issue military rifle.

The 30 MI was my first handgun, still have it. I thought the grip was too thick at first, but I can't accidentally drop the mag. It always ran well and was as accurate as I could shoot. Have not shot it in 5 years or more.

I also have an Star 30MI and I love it, is my favourite gun, strong and reliable, the gem of the Spanish crown, unfortunately star pistols are really hard to find here in Canada 🇨🇦

The Star M30 is a very well made handgun and very durable. Back in the late 80's I read about one that was a rental at a gun shop range that reputedly had more than 20,000 rounds thru it with no parts failures. It's a little hefty to handle but feels good in the hand. Built like a tank! I love mine and would never sell it. It's never failed to go bang!

Most treat USA as lost cause for foreigners. Everyone knows at most one can usually get only a licensing deal or possibly get the contract should they promise the production to be in USA. As big as USA military and LE market is many companies count it isn't worth their while to setup USA operation, if they have healthy enough demand and markets other places. Also companies often submit items to trials, knowing they have no way to get the deal or it is an unicorn chance. Just being in trials and getting that feed back is valuable. As noted here based on Star changing things based on trials feed back. It is essentially additional cheap QA. Just handout the guns and maybe ammunition for it. The military handles the statistics, man power and testing. You just ask that in exchange for the firearms and munitions, you get back their feed back on improvements and the test statistics. Heck just having good statistics from military trials is valuable marketing. "This gun fired X rounds in military Y trials without fault." It being outside trial and test gives much more credence to the results than "in internal company testing this gun has amazing reliability record." Case in point, not from firearms, but ice breakers of all things. Being a Finn there has beeen talk of the up coming USCG ice breaker fleet expansion. What with us having been the biggest builder of said ships for decades (thanks to the never ending soviet(/ now Russian federation) demand for arctic icebreakers plus our own Baltic fleet). From get go all the companies went 'In the end they will never buy them from our shipyards. Instead we are looking into some specialist parts supply and design deals for the planning work. It is abundantly clear the ships will be built on USA shipyards, because Americans buy only American. However we hoped it's 'designed in Helsinki, built in Newport (apparently my first though, Brooklyn is closed by now).' Even that is doubtful since the next biggest competition is Canada. So most likely it is designed in Canada, built in USA.

Ari Takalo; it was a foregone conclusion for political reasons that during the decision phase, the new service weapon would be a foreign designed handgun in 9mm to be in alignment with NATO. The decision of which firearm would unfortunately come down to how big and expensive factory would be built where, preferably to be constructed in the state of influential politicians, which at that time were all machine Democrats (as they had controlled Congress for years and had all the committee Chairmanships, and could steer monies to their districts. Re: Robert Byrd in West Virginia for MANY plumb projects. Anyway, American manufacturers cried loudly, but in that political party, firearms have long been out of favor. There have been similar situations of foreign manufacturers favored over domestic in more recent years, example FN over Colt, etc.

Joel McBain; not since the mid-nineties has it been a requirement. There was a Presidential decision to product all sorts of defense articles off-Shore. This was a significant part of the “off-shoring” movement and spread the military spending around.

@Joel McBain Oh yeah. Actual read the Congress research paper on the Coast Guard program (the nerd that I'm). That flatout indicates, that USCG falls under armed services regulation on it. Not to mention CG has specific separate law restating this. Only way major hull parts are built outside USA is by Presidential exception order, that is to be notified to Congress and only on grounds of national security needs. I assume meaning "war is coming, we can't ourselves built it in time, Canada can built it in time due to specific reason X." So whoever gets the design order, it will be built by USA major yard. Heavy Icebreakers not being exactly small ships. Thing is the ice breaking hull is not a run off the mill bulk job. It has to be planned and built correctly. Otherwise it is the ship breaking and not the ice. So probably one of the military supplying yards in USA, who know what it means "to this strength, in this specific design and no less, no cutting corners". Not to mention the design. Which currently general form is result of decades and decades of refinement and practical experience. That design has to come from hand full of design companies around the world. Should one want it properly done. Most of those being Canadians, Nordic or Russian. Or it is some other company, who hires bunch of expert at high price from the existing specialists. However the biggest problem is, apparently Congress is planning to yank the USCG funding for the program. Which I would say is about the most idiotic thing I have heard. USA has single Heavy breaker Polar Star, which is 42 years old on 30 year planned life. Ice breakers unlike strategic bombers, don't age well. The breaking is attrition heavy job and Star is constantly breaking down, whenever it is deployed out. It is running out of spares also, since nobody makes the 1970s parts anymore. With Arctic opening and Russia on other side of Bering straight having more ice breakers probably just on the local harbour.... (Federation governmental fleet is 44 breakers, private mining and oil companies breakers on top of it.) USA needs 2 heavy breakers about 5 years ago.

While I freely admit that I enjoy carrying light weight pistols, you are very right about weight being important for managing heavier kicking rounds. I have two small Kahr .40s (the .40 S&W always seemed to have more and snappier push back than the .45 acp, at least to me). One is all steel (K-40 covert), the other is polymer (PM40). The K-40 Covert feels like it weighs as much as my 1911, but really is not unpleasant at all to shoot. The PM40, however, which is the one I most often carry, is SO light that it'll make you add an extra "Please" into the "Please don't make me shoot you" request. ;) I used to have to qualify with it on a 25 round backup/off-duty course of fire. After 25 rounds my arthritic hands were pretty much done shooting for the week. Also, I also agree that it's a shame Star folded. I always thought their pistols were pretty darn decent. I'd love to see what they could come up with now days.

My dad had a PD. It's because of that that I bought a 30PK as soon as I became legally old enough. I often wish I had bought a PD instead, but the 30 has served me very well for 2 1/2 decades. It really is a comfortable gun to shoot!

You're giving too much credit to Springfield. They don't manufacture any of the XDs, they're all made in Croatia with Springfield's name on them.

The Firestar in .45 is a great pistol, shoots well, realiable but, as with most of the Star pistols of the era, a bit heavy. Basically a beefed up 9mm Firestar to handle the larger .45 cartrdge. Buy one if you can find one because those of us who own them typically do not sell them, if that say's anything about the quality and realiability.

They also came up with the "Double Eagle." Another bad design.

@@sinisterthoughts2896 I also bought one of those. The first factory-produced truly small .45 if I remember correctly. I ended up with one of the Detonics MKV Combat Masters. It is a really great shooter, but weighs almost as much as a full size.
