So 3 years later, what we have learned is the chugging was never about the spring having a problem with it, and it's the case around it. At this point, forget replacement Factory made screws, get something at Home Depot or something of the same diameter for it.

the motor still needed to be cleaned either way so I don't regret doing this at all. The spring probably was REALLY chugging because despite scraping up against the sides of the motor, it still works better and quieter than before.
