More than 2,000 protesters have been arrested on campuses across the country following the spread of pro-Palestinian and pro-ceasefire protests. Historically, American universities have been sites of major movements for social change, spanning from the anti-McCarthy demonstrations of the 50s to the more recent Black Lives Matter movement. Despite this legacy, education administrators past and present have struggled to find effective responses, oftentimes resorting to heavy-handed tactics. Professors Eddie Glaude Jr. of Princeton and Karen Attiah, a current lecturer at Columbia University, join Ali Velshi to discuss schools' latest handling of campus protests and the decision to deploy law enforcement.

But lots of movements that are generally considered correct nowadays broke laws and/or had people in them arrested. Anti apartheid protests took Hamilton Hall and changed it's name to Mandela Hall. Lot's of civil rights protesters broke laws that enforced segregation. And I could also add that not only people who break the law feel less safe around police, you can take a look at all the cases of police violence against inocent people in other situations. Search the cases of Erik Cantu and of Karen Garner to see if people might have other reasons to be afraid of the police.

Not only that but Meanwhile the chief or sheriff at UCLA is under fire for NOT HAVING ENOUGH POLICE ON CAMPUS FAST ENOUGH after a skirmish started. Theyre coming for his job even though he told the university they shouldn’t allow the “encampment” at all as they broke several policies like overnight camping. They ignored him and now want to blame him for now being able to get it under control after they let it get out of control. So NYPD is smart to refuse to let that happen to them by keeping a presence there

But enforcing trespassing laws, removing illegal "encampment"s, and ensuring "public order" so that everyone remains safe is not "Police doing bad things". You know most cities require "permits" and notice of mass gatherings of most types, including peaceful protests? (or at least they do here when the Trumpers gather every other Friday / weekend at our busiest intersection to promote him (that area also does have the available "public" and power company space for such a thing). ) Or is that just how we now perceive police forces, after Uvalde and their failures to act as police should?

They have been at war off and on since 1948 over the Gaza Strip. Hamas attacked 1st. Both used starvation by cutting off supply routes. As of May Palestine is a observer while Israel has been a member in the UN for years. I wish we had stayed out of their war and let the UN do what they thought needed to be done. To many have died, suffered losses and been displaced. Find a peaceful solution. PLEASE!

Unfortunately, this is exactly right. The Columbia U "protesters" are already falling to a disinformation campaign brought in with those "outside agitators" (who are also mostly pro PLO types). The cops certainly don't want to have to assist Columbia U staff in clearing these kids from trespassing, *and definitely do not want to clean up all the mess, trash, and broken stuff these trespassing meddling kids left behind* .

Meanwhile the chief or sheriff at UCLA is under fire for NOT HAVING ENOUGH POLICE ON CAMPUS FAST ENOUGH after a skirmish started. Theyre coming for his job even though he told the university they shouldn’t allow the “encampment” at all as they broke several policies like overnight camping. They ignored him and now want to blame him for now being able to get it under control after they let it get out of control.

HIstorically, in every major student protest movement, from the protests for civil rights, the protests against the Vietnam War, the protests against apartheid in South Africa, the protests against the run up to the Iraq War, down to the present moment, the students protesters have proven to be on the right side of history, yet in each of these cases the opposition used the same playbook. For example, these student protesters are naive or they are privileges spoiled brats, or they are communists, or they are anti-American. You know, America, love it or leave it. Stunningly, after the murders at Kent State, national polls showed the majority of Americans supported the actions of the National Guard that day, just like they supported the infamous Hard-Hat riots against anti-war demonstrators in New York City. Now, apparently, objecting to genocide is equivalent to anti-Semitism, nevermind that many of the student protesters are Jews. Perhaps George Santayana was correct in his observation about "the confirmed inability of the human race to learn."

The students were screaming for sharia law, the Ayatollah installed as 'Supreme leader' and a return to the 7th century totalitarian theocracy. Left wing Swedes marched in SUPPORT of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Chechoslovakia. have you ever heard the term 'Tankies?' It refers to the left wing protestors who supported the Soviet tanks crushing dissent. We've also had violent protests by muslim students over Muhammed cartoons and 'defaming the prophet.' Any political considerations should not be considerations at all ideally and to the degree they must be considered then CONSIDER them and make any changes at such a time in such a way that benefits or minimizes negative impacts on the university. Including if not especially for apartheid South Africa related holdings Spoiled teenagers to young adult 20 somethings have no business dictating such changes to the the university let alone in a DO IT NOW OR WE WILL THROW A TANTRUM INDEFINITELY ON THE CAMPUS while pretending we are taking part in a real world protest and/or riot against the evil university that is literally protecting us from the consequences of our actions by telling the university police not to enforce the laws and regulations and instead just let them keep this encampment game going. Anyone with valid criticism or suggestions can literally go to the office or write/call etc. the department managing those decisions and have greater influence.

Also, all considerations are political an organization take that is not related to personal taste is political in some way. The protests are a way to make so supporting certain actions, like supporting apartheid, start having a negative impact on the university. About enforcing the law or not, let's remember how many countries had or have imoral laws, and how many times breaking laws lead to improvements in the world. The US became independent by breaking laws. Segregation stopped with lots of people breaking laws. Being homossexual was against the law in the US not that long ago. And you say they should send their complaints to a department, as if it would cause the university to change anything. Why wouldn't that department just trow away those complaints? You also say that those students are spoiled teenagers, but it is irrelevant. There are plenty of old ignorant people that also feel entitled. That's nothing more than an ad hominem. And finally, should the university's decisions be unrelated to morality? If a university discovers that a product is toxic, but a company that supports it also sells it, should it hide the information, so it wouldn't cause problems to their supporter that might cut investments?
