Michael Springer shares his compelling story of serving in the Iraq war, the subsequent trauma he endured, and his challenging journey back home. We explore how he fell into the clutches of addiction, ultimately leading to nearly a decade behind bars in a state prison. But most importantly, we uncover the inspiring tale of how he managed to overcome these daunting obstacles and successfully transform his life.

Wish u would have more combat vets on . I was a combat vet in the Marines in Afghanistan, and got addicted to heroin to deal with PTSD , so I love stories like this with a good ending . I’ve lost so many friends to suicide from PTSD and addiction .

I filled an appeal as soon as I got out. Best thing I ever did looking back at it now. I didn't know how it would have been so life changing especially after divorce. My X wife isn't aware that I'm living a comfortable stress-free life now. Thanks to my service in the military 🇺🇸

Michael I was in Ramadi just south of you in 2004-2005. Was in the Snake Pit. We took over Saddams CIA barracks and that’s where we lived. Only difference was I was in the Marines. It was hell on earth in 2004. They were set up waiting on us to come back after the withdrawal of 2003. I was a combat engineer on the explosives side. I was attached to a Marine infantry company where 8 of us were assigned signed to 120-140Marines in 2/4. Lost my assigned rack mate 6hrs into our first mission. RPG to the face. Absolute Nightmare of a moment. Stayed like that for the whole deployment.

I know we all did are part, but I joined the Marines at age 21 and went on tour to Iraq in 2008, when it was nearly over. If I would’ve joined at age 18, I would’ve been there in 2005 and possibly not returned home.

Thank you for your service. Make sure you reach out if you need help. I met my Marine in Fallujah. Starting in 2004 He spent 36 straight months and I spent 30 straight months. Very difficult mission for sure. It has shown its ugly head for both of us. We take it day by day. Semper Fi.

I know two afghan iraq war veterans with similiar experiences who have endured ptsd ,divorce and difficulties keeping jobs as well as alcohol issues. One had turret gunner buddy killed in humvee similar to this tale ended up doing eight combat tours ,kept a photo album of his kills and is state police dispatcher. Another had co driver killed in convoy ambush ,did house to house searches as detailed here and had to be treated at va also gave up custody of sole child . Currently a mailman.

Cody jinks once said “poor people go to work, or they go to war”. There was no college option for people like us, I joined and didn’t get a deployment, it sucks but I couldn’t control it. I listened to these stories and worked with these guys. Remember to thank these veterans especially, back then it was a nightmare and these brave men and women really had to endure some wild shit. Sorry for the road you went on man, I’m glad you eventually came back. That’s all that matters man, thank you Ian for giving people like him a platform.

FYI, ROE are rules of engagement. Like he was saying don’t fire unless fired upon. As far as I remember it’s an escalation of force in like 5 or so steps starting with I assume verbal communication. Same shit that police are “supposed” to follow. Just a little tidbit bit, because I had no idea of ROE before my service
