Combining Time Lapse and Video at Sunset

Today on The Slanted Lens, we’re looking at combining three things: two axis motion, time-lapse, and live action footage to give us a unique shot. We’re shooting on the 3rd Street bridge in Los Angeles, using our Genie, Genie Mini and Magic Carpet from Syrp. This is the first of a series that I am calling “Lost in America.” This first one is a young musician lost in the hustle and bustle of L.A.
I built a small window set that we can take onto location. Using our Syrp Magic Carpet slider we set up a shot to move from inside the “room” to outside. I want it to be a two axis move on the slider, so I set up my Genie and Genie Mini to work together.
For the test, I shot on aperture priority at f/4.5. The first time-lapse in my test was a two second interval and because the sun was setting, the shutter varied from 1/80s at the beginning to 1/20 near the end. The cars do not look like they are moving very fast, they’re very staccato - bink, bink, bink. As it got darker, the shutter started to drag, from 1/4 at the beginning to 0.3. Now the cars are blurring together and that 2 second interval looks fabulous. So the shutter speed makes a huge difference in the amount of motion blur. It adds to that effect of moving down the street as the cars blur from one position to the other, almost like frames in a video piece.
I came out a few days ago and did an interval test- two seconds vs four seconds vs eight seconds. The longer the interval, the faster the cars move. If you get a shot every eight seconds the car moves further before the next shot. Intervals depends on two things: how often you take a shot, and how fast the object is moving. A car moves fast and needs a quick interval to catch it and see it move in the frame. Clouds on the horizon that are a long way away will need a much slower interval to catch motion. They are not moving very fast so you need to lengthen the interval. Slow moving objects need a longer interval. Faster moving objects need a quicker interval.
When I shoot time-lapse at sunset I set my white balance to auto, and the camera to aperture priority. It’s dark enough that the shutter will drag and create motion. If I’m shooting time-lapse during the day I set the camera to either manual or shutter priority, and choose the shutter speed. Today I’m using two seconds for the interval.
I set up my camera move and program it into the Syrp Genie. They really make this so easy. I set it on preview and click OK. It shows me the camera move in real time. I make adjustments to get the dolly move and the pan just right. I want to combine the move out of the window with a pan to the street.
Once I like what I see I hit record, and record the live action portion of our shot using the preview. I do this several times. Now I set the time-lapse and start the move.
There is our final live action and our time-lapse. We will use a garbage mat to cut the two together using the line created by the window.
What I learned: well we did not get kicked out, for that I’m happy. I really enjoyed the shoot using the Syrp equipment, the Genie, Genie Mini and Magic Carpet. Let’s take a look at the final video.
Thanks for watching. Keep those cameras rollin’ and keep on clickin’.

Here is the STEP BY STEP PROCESS on how J.P achieved such a creative video: 1. First J.P set up his location and the stage dolly for fluid video motion. He framed the shot and is now ready to shoot. 2. He then first shot a regular video focusing on the individual looking out of the "room"! 3. He then shot another sequence of photos (time lapse), making sure that the second setup perfectly lines up with the first one. 4. Now J.P has two shots, one with his subject and the second of the traffic. 5. Assuming that J.P used Adobe Premier Pro for this project, J.P used a wonderful tool in Premier Pro called the GARBAGE MATTE. What garbage matte essentially allows one to do is that it creates a new layer on top of the existing video and provides you with several(customizable) points within the frame, from which you can select individual points and mask the underlying video. J.P made sure to make a precise selection of points at the edge of the wall of the room and replaced it with the time lapse shot. 6. Assuming, he finalized the video by color grading,, he then rendered into one single video. How to Garbage Matte? Click the link below to learn more. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BssCMM5A7C0.html Hope it helps! Great Video J.P!

You suggest AV mode for sunset timelapses which obviously can induce the dreaded "Flicker" with exposure changes. Do you have any tips on metering modes/settings to help elminate this, or any software to correct in post?
@TheSlantedLens

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm kind of confused. Did you compose a normal speed footage and a time-lapse footage? I have a similar system with edelkrone and I've been thinking about the same idea. But I've been having trouble with matching the look of time lapse footage and the video.
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 9 лет назад
+Kasra Afzali Yes i programmed the move into the slider and then rolled the camera when I ran the preview mode for the Time Lapse. I got the live footage on the first pass and then I reset the slider and ran it again to get the time lapse. In post we matted the two together. Good Luck!

See that flicker in your time lapse? Look at the sky in the takes you're showing at the end. It's what happens when you don't shoot timelapse wide open, your aperture can't go back to exactly 5.6 every time, and it screws time lapses up. You need to either shoot wide open or use an old manual aperture lens
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset 7 лет назад
or use the lens twist method. Hold that button on the camera body that closes the aperture to the actual set aperture and unscrew the lens just a little bit so it can't communicate with the body. The aperture will be stuck at whatever it was set at.
@e11world
@e11world 9 лет назад
I still don't get how you actually got the timelapse and video at the same time? Or How you can do that?
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 9 лет назад
+Eddie - E11World I love Syrp's motion control devices (the Genie and Genie Mini) because they have the option to do a preview of the time lapse you have set up. It will go through the whole movement in about 30 seconds. This is a great tool to make sure you don't waste time with a time lapse movement that isn't framed correctly. When I did the preview for this time lapse, I hit record on the camera so I would have the live action of Clay sitting in the window. We then matted the time lapse together with the video from the preview to get the final. You can see my post process for the time lapse images and how I turn them into a video in a lesson from last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V4mgVPok7JM.html

+The Slanted Lens Thanks for the quick reply. So you did shot twice (timelapse and video) then basically masked the video part you want with the timelapse to get the effect of both (matching color and all that stuff).

Lucky the permit police did not stop you. I used to shot all over downtown in the 80's and at the train station and I was never questioned about a permit. The Arts District sucks now. I like the idea, I just wish the subject was more interesting or styled better. He looks like your assistant or a friend.

JP off topic, but didnt the police get told photographers have the right to take photos in the city.
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 9 лет назад
+Joe's Photo & Video Channel You do until you start setting something up like we did. It becomes a police call. I don't think most would bother us but they could. NY is great they are very open to production. As long as you don't tether to a computer your OK.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 9 лет назад
The Slanted Lens Hopefully they will start easing up on such restrictions. I can understand a permit if you hopped out into the middle of the road with your strobes and a crew of people trying to get that next modeling shot, but a tripod and camera on a bridge should be allowed without any permit. IMHO. I never lived in LA, spent many years in SanDiego though while in the Navy. Loved that place. Take care JP and thanks for replying..

To me, the interval for the cars was too long. The cars didn't look like they were moving in any particular direction, there was no flow. There is no practical reason to have them go by so quickly.
