In this video, we'll do a rather in-depth exploration about the fees connected with selling your sports cards and other trading cards on eBay and on COMC. As well as outlining the specific fees, we'll also look at what it means in practice with a few realistic examples. I think a lot of people will be surprised at what options may be the best for you to consider if you are looking to not loose too much money to seller's fees.

Note: I was wrong about one thing. I didn't realize that sports cards get a higher free posting limit than other categories. So stores get A LOT more free listings each month. 10K and 50K depending on the store subscription.

It's sad how much I've had this thought. Think about how many transactions they make a day. The largest user selling platform in the world. Crazy.

Haha... Good idea! They definitely know how to corner a market and carve out a major slice for themselves. Crazy to think how much their website sells and they don't actually have any products themselves for the most part.

You forgot the .25 per card for shipping added it doesn’t cost you anything but it will take from profit because it adds into your listing price

Great analysis of selling and the fees. I sent most of my stuff to comc. Especially cards under $50 but more than $3.

Thanks for the great analysis/breakdown. I hate "transaction fees" based on the dollar value of a card. A transaction of cash between 2 entities electronically cost at most $0.10. Thanks again and have a great one!

Yeah, it's really amazing to think how much can potentially be made without the card actually physically moving anywhere. You're right though, transaction fee based on dollar value, while it is the norm, is kinda strange. Not just on COMC, but anywhere really. I mean, what different does eBay do for a card that sells for $5 and a card that sells for $200, but they make a lot more money on that more expensive card. I've always felt the same about PSA grading fees. How can they charge so much more for a card worth more, I mean they are performing the same service on every card, why does that exact same service cost some much more sometimes. It's all weird.

The one fee that I think you forgot to include with COMC is the $0.25 insertion fee if you send in your own cards (there is no fee if you buy on COMC and then resell). This can be big if you're selling a lot of lower-end cards. If you want to sell a card for $5.00 you have to list it for $4.75 on your end because there is a $0.25 insertion fee that COMC adds to the price. Otherwise, it was a wonderful breakdown of the fees for both platforms. It really does depend on what you're particular goals are with selling on which platform is best (and you may use both with certain cards going to COMC and others going to eBay). The other fee to be aware of if you send in oddball bigger size cards is that COMC charges $3 per card for oversized cards. Keep up the quality content!

Has anyone found that additional fee of $0.25 or $1.00 anywhere in there policies? I haven't. At least when you do the submission they do not state that anywhere. I really prefer ComC over eBay due to fees but they could be a little bit more transparent on their homepage.

Is the $0.25 fee you're referring to the $0.25 shipping fee per card the buyer pays on top of the price you list it for? Yeah, you're right about that bigger size cards. That is an additional fee to consider for those kinds of cards. And I hadn't thought about it before, but I bet that's why there's not so much a selection of some more role play players common cards from some of those vintage oversized basketball card sets.

@@scoa Yes on the $0.25 shipping & handling fee...since it's added on to the price when listed (and not afterward when the card is purchased) it ends up being a defacto fee for the seller. If you want to sell a card for $5, you have to list it for $4.75.

Big advantage on ComC compared to eBay is that there are no returns. How many times a buyer decided after the buy he doesn't like the card and sends it back because of reasons eBay accepts for a return. I do not have the statistical numbers, but if you take only 1 case in 30 sells (sounds reasonable) you would have to put on top $5/30 sells for shipping costs plus all your time. On ComC the buyer buys definetly, no returns.

Fees are wrong for eBay. They give you way more listings in the basic store for cards then 1250

Look out for new set cards. ComC will give a discount on the insertion fee if you send in cards of recent sets. Not sure if it was 30 or 60 days since release

Yeah, that's a good one to note. I don't think I ever get cards fast enough from new sets to get them up on COMC in time, but that is a great thing to keep in mind for people buying stuff right after its release.

Agree! How can ebay even tax (fee) us on sales tax? Doesnt even seem legal! If you ship standard ebay shipping you are losing money on shipping as well. What a joke

Which platform you leaning to? I'd basically say if you don't mind the labor, eBay is a solid option. If you don't want to do much work yourself, COMC is a good option, as long as the cards you're selling are worth at least $2 a piece.

@@scoa yes trying to figure out the value of my cards. Leaning towards COMC as I have. A full time job and having part of the work outsourced would be beneficial. However having a hard time figuring out what my churn rate could be on COMC. My cards are mostly late 70s and early 80a baseball basketball and football cards

COMC could be such a great site but the poor website design, lack of features and functionality of being able to quickly liquidate cards is why eBay will always be my preference. Maybe the app changes some things for COMC, but I will gladly take higher fees for more eyeballs, promotion options, control over my cards and better quality photos.

I can understand that. I'm surprised to hear you say poor website design though. I actually really like the site, I find it easier to find what I'm looking for or for good deals better than any other sports card marketplace. I'm with you about the quick liquidation thing though, that's really the main thing that keeps me from using them closer to exclusively.

@@scoa I only say design really for two reasons I guess - having the condition notes separate from the rest of the cards really irks me lol and then better filtering. I want to be able to have saved searches so I can see what I want and not have to sort through junk on the recently added pages

@@GabeyCardStacks Have you ever tried to use the "RSS Reader" feature? I've never done this myself, but I've been told by others that you can specify specific searches and get updates on things that meet your criteria through your RSS feed.

Comc would go out of business if ebay reduced their fees to 5%….so let’s be thankful that they haven’t. But I think ebay should drop fees to 10% cap

As sellers, some of us don't want to deal with shipping individual cards, returns, scammers, and the other hassles of eBay. As buyers, being able to bundle multiple cards into one shipment is a huge advantage. Who wants to pay for shipping on every single card they buy? There will always be a place for COMC.

Yeah, I tend to agree with j that there's always gonna be a place for COMC, as long as they keep doing what they do well. That being said, if eBay did reduce their fees to something closer to 5-10%, I probably would use them a lot more. As is, I use COMC a lot, and am also looking into BuySportsCards.com, MySlabs, WhatNot and other places to sell cards. If eBay brought their fees down, I'd be less inclined to experiment with so many different marketplaces.
