When I saw the title, I automatically knew that I would want to go book shopping in Edinburgh even though I'm broke af and lives a whole ocean away from it.
I live an hour away and have never done book shopping there. It does make me want to head up there though and soon. I adore Edinburgh but always have other stuff to be doing there.
A friend and I did a “bookshop crawl” like a pub crawl but better for your liver. We went to bath and hit about 7 bookshops including a topping and Co bookshop! Would totally recommend. We bought one book in each shop and went to the Jane Austen and Mary Shelley museums. It was amazing. Would totally recommend.
I did a bookshop crawl in London for my 18th birthday! I’m planning another one in Bath soon but had no idea the Shelley and Austen museums were there as well 😍 now I have even more to do thanks
As much as I adore London, but there’s something about Edinburgh which really makes me happy and it feels cozier as a city. Edinburgh must have the most fun book shops.
@@marielle8274 of course there is waterstones on Princes St which is nice- has a great cafe aswell. Armchair books is a must for the insta but also for beautiful second hand/old books. Topping and company as Jack says in the video is one of my favourites and I have spent hours in there. Golden hare books is cute aswell and Transreal if you love your fantasy :)
@@marielle8274 piggy-backing off the comment below to say lighthouse books is another one to add to the list! they even have a shop dog🥺 the blackwells just over the bridge from waverley is really nice too. toppings is a must, though!
Typewronger Books 😍 Never thought I'd see that in your videos! I visited Edinburgh 3 years ago and still think about that book store 😅 They really were so nice!! They made little origami figures out of old book pages and just gave them to us as an extra, and they put their store's stamp into the books I bought so I'll never forget where I got them. And they offered tea 😭😭 Loveliest experience ever! Edit: whoops, watched the rest of your video and how gorgeous that they still do that 😁😁 I still use their bookmark as well! Ugh, any reader will enjoy Edinburgh so much ❤
So glad you managed book shopping while in Edinburgh, it really is the best city for book lovers 😻 but also so sad you missed Golden Hare Books when it's so close to Rare Birds. It's truly wonderful, do go when you're next in town!!
I live in Edinburgh and Earthlings is my favourite book of all time, Im about to get a tattoo for it even. so basically this video feels like it was made for me lmao
earthlings definitely changed my life, i feel so blessed to have been able to read something that played so much with my mind i still think about it loads even 2 months after having read the book. Excited to see what you think of it! (sorry for my poor english!)
Congratulations on gradu-lating -- so happy to hear you got to properly celebrate with your mates! (Your Edinburgh trip looked wonderful -- I've added it to my bucket list.)
oh you’re in for a wild ride with Earthlings! I also got it after reading and loving Convenience Store Woman but the last part of the book was quite shocking/disturbing
A wild ride is really the only way to describe it! After reading the first 100 pages I had to put it down cause it was just… a lot. It hunts me months after finishing it. Which is of cause the highest praise you can give a book 😅
i think this is my favorite video of yours that i've seen so far. simply spreading the love and excitement of going to discover new books in bookstores, carefully reading the good opinions before opening it, admiring the cover. that's the whole act of reading for me, this was so pretty, jack.
Every time I visit Edinburgh, I get that same feeling you talked about, the feeling that I need to someday call that city home! There’s something just so enchanting and comforting about that place.
I’m currently doing a year studying abroad in Scotland and literally went to Edinburgh for a weekend and went on a bookshop tour (instead of the ‘normal‘ touristy things). Six bookstores all over the city. And you bet i bought at least one book per store 📚
Jackkkk you have to read a thousand splendid suns and my dark vanessa. Both stories are so chilling and brilliant, beyond a 5 star read. ps absolutely love love love all your book content 😍
@@erintalia9490 I must have missed that video, I’m so glad he liked it 😍 you’re so right, that book is so haunting, I kept thinking of the story long after I finished it.
Eee this is so fun! I went to Edinburgh this February and of course went book shopping there. I personally really loved Lighthouse, a relatively small but very diverse independent bookstore.
This video couldn't be more in time!! I'm traveling to Edinburgh next week for the first time and was looking for bookstore recommendations! Will definitely check the ones out you went to, they look lovely ^^
so excited you hit these ones while you were in town!! but I also recommend the podcast rare birds books makes, called "typecast." It's just super casual and fun and they just started a new series!
This is a sign I need to move to Scotland someday in the future. I visited Edinburgh back in late 2019 and missed it ever since. I had several signs of I needed to move there but lately, I've been getting more hahaha
As a person that lives really close to Topping & Company, it truly is, a blessing and a curse Also, next time you're in Edi I recommend you check out The Lighthouse! It's a bookshop focused on activism, feminism, queer authors, authors of colour etc. (and if you're lucky you'll meet the dog that lives there)
Rare Birds have a monthly subscription service too where you pick Book A or Book B based on a mystery blurb. I did it for a few months and discovered a few really amazing books - would definitely recommend it!!
not me laughing at 4am bc of this cute video. watching your videos is the perfect way to end a tiring day-thanks for making me laugh and for being such a great storyteller~ ♡
Jack! I am looking at your map and am baffled how you haven't visited Montreal yet! There are so many independent book shops! The art, music and literary scene is amazing, especially in the summer!
Omfg I just wandered through the doors of the new Topping & Company in Bath, Uk that’s now on York street the other day and fell in love! The place is absolutely beautiful 😍😍 it’s in a grade 2 listed building so the outside looks just as pretty as the inside ❤️Congratulations on your gradulation! ❤️❤️🥳🥳
I'm a few hours away from Edinburgh and yes Topping and Co is one of my must goes whenever I'm in Edinburgh! Also fun fact, you can get free tea/coffee whilst there and when you buy a book 😁 there's also other locations in St.Andrews and Bath I believe
If you ever happen to be in Belgium you absolutely have to stop by Limerick in Ghent and Luddites in Antwerp! Limerick is 2 bookshops next to eachother, one with new books and one with secondhand books and a café. Luddites has mostly English books and on the second floor there is, brace yourself, a WINE BAR. It's amazing. Both these stores have vibes similar to Topping & Company and are just *chef's kiss*
omg i think about the typewronger bookstore literally every day I loved that place 😭😭 they guy giving us tea and the little dragon I'm so so glad we went (like 3 or so years ago??)
I loved Earthlings and it really is a world away from Convenience Store Woman!! It’s a lot darker and really stuck with me afterwards. One of my fav books and looking forward to what you thought of it !!!
If you ever find yourself near Alnwick please take a look at Barter Books - it’s a second hand bookshop and it’s build in an old station. It’s just a lovely vibe and all the books are insanely affordable
Hi, I love your videos as someone who is Scottish I am so glad that you went to Edinburgh and went to these amazing book shops I love them all. I love the bookshops in Stockbridge! I am hoping to a do a masters in Edinburgh
