two words = goose bumps Kinda embarrassing to say but I'm a guy and I must admit, when I hear or rather feel Sting sing this song - I kinda blush and fluster or something lol. That's how beautiful it is.
From the very start the piano created the imagery when you are seeing a woman in your mind's eye and the man that is so deep in love with her. Sting follows the lilting chords and tells the story so perfectly written. The captivation of being in love to yearn to have your soul lifted.
I lost the title of this album in the jumbled junctions of my mind and felt like never again would I feel the grateful tears that stings emotive expression envoked in me. I lived this both ways.
+Doug Sullivan Agree. I knew this from Tumbleweed Connection, but never really got it until I heard this version. I think Elton would agree, he' plays keyboards on this track. Also think the double base part brings it to a whole new level.
+Doug Sullivan Absolutely. When you listen to Sting sing it, it's as if his voice rolls over the lyrics of the song as water rolls over sand. Part of it is his voice in this song too. It certainly adds to the depth of the song. Awesome!
+Doug Sullivan True. Elton has said on more than one occasion that he is not the best singer around. There is no question though that when he has good lyrics to inspire him he is one of the best songwriters of all time.
Lily Thomson I think Elton's voice is a matter of taste. Some people love it, some don't. I seem to be in a minority that loves his older, rich and slightly raspy current voice best. A great songwriter for sure, but I think his greatest achievement is as a pianist. Seriously, I know that film composer Hans Zimmer and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, both worked with Elton, were deeply impressed with his playing, calling him "dangerously brilliant" and "genuinely one of the best pianists of this era." He has so much feeling in his playing and is one of the best improvisers outside of the jazz greats. And I've heard him play literally every type of piano music; classical, jazz, pop, old-fashioned rock, blues, and gospel.
"Live in Australia" was damn near perfect - I could have done without "Take me to the Pilot" as it just didn't mesh with the rest of the album, but... truly an amazing effort. I love to hop in the car and turn it up loud... just freakin amazing!!!!
I want to echo what some others have said. Sting really hit it out of the park with his rendition of Elton John's song (and Bennie Taupin's exquisite lyrics.) Sir Elton, you are brilliant; but Sting really got you here. Same thing with Metallica's version of "Turn the Page"...great Bob Seeger song that another band improved upon.
Of course, the piano player man in question is, in fact, ELTON JOHN HIMSELF. Only, he asked that for this album, he be billed under the name "Nancy Treadlight"...
Used to have this CD and now cannot find a digital copy online....Grrrrr. Terrific version of this song. Probably the best song on this collection, besides Joe Cocker's "Sorry"

Not sure I would say he is under rated, but the music he and Taupin did early on was masterful (new stuff... Not so much). Hands down the "Live in Australia" is amazing (listen to it loud and on a good system) - other than "Take me to the Pilot" the album is near perfection - just don't think that song flows well with the rest

One spent a lifetime with me and the other let me counting the stars in the night. Why was it not enough to spend my life with this wonderful lady? I keep thinking of Stephanie though it is pointless to do so. If the truth be known, I would say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with her. Life is so complicated.

Ok good in a kind of smoke filled jazz club kind of way. But it does not have the serious majesty of the strings and woodwinds. Nor the pained innocence. Elton nailed it. Sting reinterpreted it. Gotta love the original. More magical. Less bluesy.
"Выставка достижений" знаменитого, и весьма плодотворного тандема Элтона Джона и Берни Топина, с трибьют-альбома 1991г. записанного в честь двадцатилетия их творческого союза. Среди звезд первой величины записавших свои версии композиций сэра Элтона Джона были Эрик Клэптон, Стинг, Тина Тернер, Роджер Долтри, Джордж Майкл и др.
@bushna2007 The singer waits for his lover. She's a new love, perhaps not consummated. He reflects on her mysterious attraction as he waits in the moonlight, he can see the light in her room. She told him to "come down in time" (or come down after a bit). Should he drop his current lover for this one? Finally she doesn't show leaving him to count the stars in the night
He still wrote plenty of great songs twenty years ago, this one obviously included. That makes him a real artist as far as I can tell. And any fame he has right now is *present* fame.
Going to get into trouble . Bernie & Elton wrote some of the best music around, their was a Soundtrack to a film released in 72 where they wrote the Soundtrack, exceptionally beautiful music "Your song" and this classic with beautiful words and music by both Bernie & Elton John. Stings cover was incredible as was Lani Hall's (Herb Alperts wife). But Elton lost the plot in my opinion in the mid to late 70's with his lifestyle. This is some of his very best.

@bushna2007 it's pretty easy to figure out.... a woman tells a man to meet up with her at some designated time and he goes and wonders if he's going to get stood up because she's not there.
I have to laugh at the line "a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune." For years I thought the line was "Custer and I just sang some songs out of tune."
Yeah...Sting sings it great...but do all of you realize Elton is playing the piano? He's setting the tempo and emotion....even though the credit for the pianist on the album is Nancy Treadlight. Elton is king.
@wpollock1 , i even think Elton would like this version better, i never heard "have i told you lately" until Rod Stewart sang it , i bet Van Morrison is glad he did
Sting does do a better job than Elton, but remember, he had 20+ years to think of how to sing this since he already knew the melody. Elton was cranking out melodies of songs in 20 minutes, then doing a quick run through with the band and recording. I think that counts for something.
Beautiful, but I prefer Eltons. Sting's is sleepy and a bit one dimensional. The Elton original was one of the most hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking love songs ever.
