Never thought I would be more drawn to dusty/muted colors for clothing. I love the muted /rusty pinks and blues (and greens). And I still haven't even turned on my sewing machine yet....)
Rosery Apparel where i live which is New Orleans you can go shop almost everything is open but for me i have 2 special needs kids i can’t afford to get sick they need my help although i bought a sewing machine earlier this year i wanted to learn how to sew but 🤷🏻♀️anyway i ‘m loving these fabrics specially the blue and sage green one😍can’t wait to see the final product🌹
The one and only bummer about Janelle not needing a mask is we don’t get a mask making tutorial from her! Lovely to shop vicariously through you. Can’t wait to hit the thrift stores here in the States again soon. With everyone at home and organizing I’m looking forward to many fruitful trips in the future. ❤️
Eeee! I’m officially hooked on op shopping for fabrics thanks to your beautiful videos. Recently found a child’s cot sheet for $2 and made some fun scrubs to wear to work as I’m a nurse working with children.
I watch almost all your videos! You have such a calming personality. my first projects when it came to sewing was some of your 10 minute crafts! Now I have a full blown business. I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this comment, but I want to say Thankyou!!😊 you’re the best! Can’t wait to watch more videos you come up with
It amazes me that you can get this much fabric or even the sheets from the op shop for so little. In Canada a queen size bed sheet is about $8-$10 at my local value village. It’s too bad. I wish I could pay $3 for the ones I find
I about died when I saw that 'vintage pattern'. Butterick 6950 was the pattern I used to make my Senior Prom dress in 1973. I used a baby blue satin-backed crepe and I loved the fit and feel of that dress.
I loved that blue linen 'egg' fabric so much I went to spotlight and bought 3m on the weekend, can't wait to see what you make with it, I'm thinking a matching summer set!
I’m an ex Lonnie girl, so it was nice to see some of the old places I used to visit 😊 Can’t wait for op shops to open up again in Melbourne. Also I loved some of your fabric choices.
Hey Janelle, recent subscriber here 🙋🏾♀️ I live in UK and the thrift shops here do not hold a candle to the amazing ones in Tasmania! Next time I’m there, I’ll bring an extra suitcase to stuff it with items from op-shops!
The raspberry red fabric! I found the identical fabric at Vinnies in Melbourne. I volunteer at the Op shop, so I love these Op shop videos. I buy table cloth, zippers and love the fabric box. I love your channel. The Sewing room makeover and your tutorials.
Last Spotlight visit was in about Feb.....stuck in my house in Vic stage 4 lockdown living vicariously through you 😊 Your Spotlight looks waaay better than my local one....jealous! Pre COVID I haven't found decent fabrics op shopping but did come across a bunch of unopened patterns which look good....50c each so can't argue with that!
Love this! So fun to see someone go to spotlight 😉 as a fellow aussie it's so nice to hear your accent and hear you talk about and go to familiar places (like salvos too!)
Love the op shop with me vlog, you found some good stuff :) :) I find that as well with op shopping and vintage shopping you have really good days and not so good days, once I went into two op shops and only came away with a book, but on the plus side it was a book I have been hunting for :) :) I also find vintage shopping a bit overwhelming as the ones in the city are so big, I tend scan the areas areas I like and sometimes I hit gold and sometimes not, as awhile ago in December I found 4 vintage skirts and a tshirt that actually fit me so was super happy with that and it was my best vintage find yet :) :)
Yes it takes a bit of patience that’s for sure! But it’s soo worth it when you find some amazing gems 😍 It’s also good to be picky and not come home with too much stuff just because it’s a bargain!
Hi Janelle, thanks for this video. I love op shopping for fabrics too - so much fabric for just a few dollars! I recently picked up a couple of almost full "boards" (not sure what to call them, those by the metre thingies for lace and trims) of lace - one pink the other white - for just $3 each! Great for shabby chic pillowcases and tablecloths. I'm still using the stash of fabric I bought at Spotlight in Launceston earlier this year. It makes me happy to work with fabric I buy on holiday or even when out on a day trip somewhere. It's amazing how much pure cotton fabric can be found in op shops. Great for making scrubs - there's been a BIG drive for people to make scrubs for health care workers here in Vic. I label mine as being made from vintage or reclaimed fabric if that's what I've used so people can choose. Your sewing room is just beautiful. I'm afraid mine will never be so pretty or neat but I love it anyway! I'm always intrigued to see your latest fabric choices and what's tucked away in your stash. Your sewing videos are always inspiring and encourage me to get sewing something other than masks and scrubs. Thank you ♥
It took me so long to embrace wearing pink too, and I think it was because with my blonde hair I thought it made me look a bit too girly? Like, barbie-style girly? Did you find this too? But as you can tell from my profile picture, I found a way to embrace it while not compromising my style, and I think that shirt does it for you too! Can't wait to see the soft pink dress you make!
For me it was mainly I just thought the colour made me look ‘washed out’ but I’m starting to find shades of pink that work for me and I love it 😊 Glad to hear you wear the colours you love too!
Question: Do you prewash and dry your fabrics...specifically new fabrics? If so...what is your method? Cold water? Dryer or line dry? Do you iron out before putting in your fabric closet? I need to get into a routine/habit of doing so.
Natalie Stanchevski Thank you Natalie! That is such a great idea to hang up fabric! I normally fold it and put it in a box, but then I forget what I have! I will try your suggestion! 👍🏼
Hi Annie! Yep I wash all my fabrics with cold water before using them and then line dry them. Then, because I don’t mind ironing, I iron them before folding them up and putting them in my stash 😊
thanks for sharing, this was fun to watch! I’m in Melbourne and cant wait for shops to open again, I’ll be running straight to spotlight and my local vinnies the moment I can. Can’t wait to see what you make!
👍Thumbs up your orangy hooded athletic rain jacket @ the start.🤔Thought it went well w/your mauve pink plaid top too👏. 😉Find men's zippered sporty jackets can be quite nice as a light casual cover-up. Like their versatility, fabrics, color range, and can often find💲great clearance deals too.
I really enjoy all of your videos and tutorials! They have an aesthetic that I love and they always relax and inspire me! I have set a goal to purchase all of your patterns in 2021, they are so lovely!
I use to work for Spotlight in Victoria, I helped to open the first interstate stores many years ago. I work in as an Early Childhood Educator now, but still have some of my Spotlight fabric a got back in the day.
Loved this video! Find it so interesting that you call your household section of secondhand shops Manchester - it's fascinating how the same things are named differently around the world
I love op shop fabric and notion shopping, im in NSW and i must say your Spotlight store is immaculate compared to ours! Maybe they like us to rummage harder for our finds 🤣 p.s super jealous of your red floral find....$4 🤗🤗
So I grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire (in the states) and I got super thrown off by you saying you first go to the Manchester section. Then I went down a google rabbit hole about Australian bedding companies 😆 Anyways, I also always go there first, I have found SO much good fabric there!
I thought of you recently, Janelle! I was in St Marys and stumbled across a place called "That Little Vintage Store". It was lovely in there and I picked up a tablecloth in the most outrageous orange 70s floral - can't wait to make myself something to wear from it & so glad I had seen your videos to inspire me to think outside the box on how to purchase fabric!
Whenever I watch your videos I want to quickly get up and get on with my sewing (I'm a fairly new sew-er and I'm looooving it haha) Love your inspiring and refreshing videos very much - new subbie from Zimbabwe 🥰
Thanks for another lovely video! I always enjoy seeing what lovely fabrics you find! 😊 I just received my first serger machine in the mail! So I’m very excited to up my sewing game and be able to tackle more stretchy fabrics! My next project is a vintage blouse I found in a thrift shop recently. It’s got a lovely brown and rust floral print and reminded me of you when I found it haha. 🧡
Thank you your spotlight is way more organised than the one near me in Cairns. I would love to take a photo and show you. I am drawn to the blue and pink as well love all the fabrics you bought and the clothes are lovely. Just go with what ever makes you happy I wear all colours if it look dull I wear a bright scarf. Up in north Queensland we have never had to wear masks have only had about 2 cases since the whole thing started. We are so lucky I count my blessing every day. Always enjoy your videos Thank you so much. Cheers Tricia.
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoy my videos 🧡 And it’s great to hear Cairns is doing well too! Also, my spotlight store never looks like that 😂 They had extended trade that week, and so in the quiet times they could get it nice and tidy!
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for taking us along on your fabric shopping journey. I too get overwhelmed at Spotlight sometimes, there are so many amazing options. I spend way too much money there :)
Your thrift store prices are so good! The thrift store in my area a 2 yard size fabric could cost over $10??! Great video Janelle! Thanks for sharing =)
Woah! Yeah I’ve noticed the prices have really dropped at my local op-shops lately! Better make the most of it while it lasts 😊 Thanks for watching lovely 🧡
I love watching your videos! I recently started sewing again after a 5 year hiatus (we had 2 babies in less than 2 years is the reasoning ha but now they're learning to sew at 4.5 and 6!) I also started knitting my second sweater today. I'm hoping the pattern to your pink sweater will be resent in the newsletter soon! I just signed up a few days ago but I'm already planning my next sweater 😊💗
Yay I’m so happy to hear you’ve gotten back into sewing 🧡 It’s seriously the best hobby to have! As for the knitting pattern, if you sign up using this link you will receive the pattern in your inbox right away 😊 www.roseryapparel.com/the-rosery-jumper
I love buying fabric at the thrift store! Last week I made an embroidered duvet cover into some tops 😍! Also I love finding dialect differences- Manchester section ? In Canada I guess we'd just have signage for linens?
Hey fellow Canadian! I actually looked up Manchester to see why they call it that and it turns out it’s because in the 18th/19th century most of the cotton fabrics were made in Manchester England so when they arrived to different countries they would be known as “Manchester goods” and I guess it just got shortened over time 😃 always cool to learn something new! Haha
The Spotlight near me has nowhere near the fabulous range of fabrics as your store seems to have. Only about 1/6 of the store is dedicated to garment fabric. I've got a few very nice buys there but the range is not the greatest. I've recently bought some very nice fabrics from various online stores, but I do prefer to see and feel the fabric in person before buying. I got some really gorgeous linen blend with fine grey stripe on cream with little white dasies on it which I was thrilled with when it arrived, from Drapers Fabrics Melbourne, great price too 😊
Do you have a video about cleaning bedsheets or fabric you get from a second hand shop? I could maybe use a shirt but I don’t know if I could buy a used bed sheet.
I’ve in Vic so mask city here. We don’t have many cases where I am though. Would love to pop in to Spotlight but I’ll wait it out a bit. I have bought some online though!
It's because all the cotton fabric used for bed linen in Australia was originally exported from the cotton mills and factories of Manchester. It's a nod to history.
At op shops in the last two weeks i found light-ish blue fake suede uncut fabric, 3m X 150 for $5!! Bestest ever!! And a week earlier, red linen uncut fabric, 5m+ for $9? !!!!!!! Good call on the mask comment! We're the same at the moment in western Australia with "closed" boarders and not having had community spread of covid-19 for well over 150?+ days, we've no need for masks- at the moment! If everyone wore a mask when asked or needed...you'd be out of lock down ALOT faster!!!!!
I’m sad Spotlight doesn’t ship internationally at this time. I really like the way their website is organized to display the rayon or viscose fabrics. I’m in Canada so I can’t order anything. 😭
