Yay! I always say that studying dress history is a blessing and a curse because now I know what the proper back panels of an 1780s gown look like, but I always annoy my friends with theses details every time we watch any historical drama.

Bernadette: "How boring is it to watch five separate videos on making a skirt?" Me: "Not at all boring?" Nope, go ahead. Make a million skirt videos. I'll watch you hand sew random bits of fabric into tag blankets or hand fell random seams. Go off. Film it all. Or make one video with three skirts. Whatever you want to do, go for it.

This feels kind of like that "soft apocalypse" aesthetic I've seen floating around. A young woman braves the wasteland to find...fabric. Not food, not medicine, but beautiful fabric to make beautiful clothing. Yes, there's a global pandemic that's virtually turned sections of the largest human cities on the planet into ghost towns, but people are still kind and there's still beauty and goodness in the world and people are doing more than just merely surviving. idk this video just gave me that weird sort of Ghibli-esque feeling that makes me both sad and warm at the same time

In the beginning there was a video of a doctor washing his groceries that made the rounds. We also didn’t know the virus’ longevity. People did quarantine items in their garage or elsewhere for a few days. I did. (Not perishable food.) Now I leave it out for about a day and then bring it inside. I don’t know if it is at all effective, but in the US it is something people do.

@ashlinraine2089 2 года назад
So totally agree with this. I was watching a TV show years ago about clothing from about the Victorian times (I think 🤔) anyways, it wasn't that uncommon to actually piece lace together as it was expensive and handmade. If someone only had so much or it wasn't wide enough they would sew it together. I do remember a shift having two thinner laces sewed on to a thicker one to make it wider. There was also another were they ran out of one lace and added another lace to it and left the first lace in. It's period accurate to use what you have or can afford. I am a knitter and crocheter, so I understand how intricate lace is. I am amazed by anyone that makes lace.

In reference to your question about quarantining items: according to my research (medical and scientific academic journals and pre-published peer-review) the virus is quite fragile on surfaces, insofar that it breaks down easily when not transferring hosts. If you feel more comfortable leaving items to quarantine for a length of time (I do not do this as the risk is low), most likely a few hours would suffice. I'm glad you got to go out and get some wonderful project things!

I had 93 yards of elastic at the start of quarantine. It was a mistake when I purchased it. I thought I would never, ever, use that much 1/4 inch black elastic... I used it all making masks. I also used about a quarter of my stash (solids) of quilting cotton making masks for the military (my brother in law needed them for his boat). So I made masks. When we were making pleated masks, I said "I can do that" because of Costuming Drama making pleated trim. I made surgical masks. I made shaped masks. I killed a sewing machine. I had very sore fingers...but it was really nice to be useful. And my compulsion to purchase 1 yard of all the pretty colors, was helpful. I will restock at some point. And I will enjoy that too.

@@wolveshowling26 It was just the technique to do pleats...I am a quilter, and I normally make them by hand sewing everything. I had never pleated before....but I knew high heat, lots of steam, lots of pins...no trim...Your imaginings are hysterical to me (like I almost fell off my sewing chair, which I needed)... I had every shade of blue, green, black, gray, brown that Kona cotton came in. The masks had to be solid, that did not clash with the Uniform of the day. When you had 30 yards of dark blue, no one cared if they were all the exact shade. I did my best to match the BUD's. And my BIL, who is Captain of a Submarine, just needed masks to protect his crew.

In regards to cleaning/sanitising stuff: afaik basically not being done here in Germany (apart from restaurant tables etc), because there isn‘t really evidence that people actually get Covid-infections from touching stuff. Probably because a) the amount of viruses on any given item is probably pretty low (unless someone infected deliberately breathed on it or did so for an extended period of time [several minutes at least]) and thus the likelihood of being infected is really low even if things get in contact with your mouth and b) the virus dies if cooked or fried and raw things tend to get washed/skinned so yeah. There was this one study where strands of SARS-Cov-2 RNA were found on a surface after 9 days but that was under laboratory conditions and it is unknown if they were still infectious (probably not). Washing your hands is still a very good idea because it reduces the likelihood of catching various diseases but if you don’t have a particular reason to think that your food/stuff is contaminated you probably don‘t need to „quarantine“ it before use. (I am not a medical professional, just hanging around with a few doctors most of the days who constantly discuss the newest information. This is how I understand what they’re telling me)

@@LibraFvr019 While it is true contracting COVID from touching surfaces is much less likely than person to person (i.e. being around, talking, sneezing, etc. - WEAR A MASK!) it's still definitely possible. I see it as home is my "safe space." Everything inside it is clean, so I don't have to worry about touching my face on accident or potential cross contamination from various objects and surfaces thereby decreasing overall likelihood of getting sick, especially since I've gone back to work. The latest evidence all seems to suggest that the risk from surface transmission is basically negligible and that quarantining objects is probably not necessary unless they've been somewhere with particularly high viral load (like a COVID ward, for instance). So you probably could stop now. But given the state of ~gestures at everything~, there's also something crucial to be said for having a sense of control over your risks. I'd expect New Yorkers are particularly feeling that very real need, given the trauma you all have been through. If it makes you feel better to keep doing it, there's no harm in it.

Quarantining/Sanitizing purchases...It’s a “SMART THING” and in my world the ONLY way I allow myself to indulge as you have today. Good for you Miss Banner 😉 From Texas

Those door handles and elevator buttons were the germ carriers and unless she sanitized her hands, everytime she put her hands near her mouth to pull that mask down is when she could have been infecting herself! It's not necessary to quarantine purchases. "So far, evidence suggests that it’s harder to catch the virus from a soft surface (such as fabric) than it is from frequently touched hard surfaces like elevator buttons or door handles,” wrote Lisa Maragakis, MD, senior director of infection prevention at the Johns Hopkins Health System."

I was wondering how the garment district was fairing during this, Also the cinematography at 2:06 was amazing!

I was just speaking with my mom about you! Because I was with my friend that works in the Cloth Museum in my city, and the wool our factories produce has been a staple in English clothing Manufacture since the 1800's! And some of it it's still produced the same way as 2 centuries ago!

I would love to watch five separate skirt-making videos. Your videos are a delight and I like to re-watch/re-listen to them while I'm sewing.

Really appreciate Bernadette braving the streets of nyc especially as a sewing padawan who is always very very confused about fabric 😅😅

In germany we also don't do this really on purpose, but to be honest I just buy food. I do wash my hands as soon I come into my appartement and change into other clothe than outside.

bnanabelle Her in Denmark we don’t quarantine anything either. Just washing hands when we get home. I’m jealous of the textile shops you have, they are few and far between here.

Here in Tucson Arizona (less than 100 miles from the USA- Mexico border we leave non-temperature sensitive items on the porch for half an hour because it’s hot enough to kill the virus in that time

It‘s just highly unlikely to catch the Virus this way. Smear infenction makes just around 20% of all infections. To get it from a parcel or something similiar, an infected Person would have to touch it right after snezzing directly into his hands and you would have to touch this particulary area of the surface he touched and then directly stick your fingers in your throat......this basically never happens with people constantly washing their hands and wearing masks. Even if this would be the case, it isn‘t even sure that you catch enough of the virus on your hands and get it into your throat.....

As the youngest of generations of hoarding sewists, I rarely have the pleasure of going to fabric stores (because *regardless* of what I want, we will undoubtedly have it), so its lovely to live vicariously through your garment district adventures

Nothing better than waking up to find a new Bernadette video waiting to be watched. And I would absolutely watch 6 different skirt videos. You underestimate your audience if you don't think that's exactly what we come here for!
