When Alma talks of illuminating our souls through the word of god I made the strangest connection. In Europe in the Middle Ages and especially Ireland there were these things called illuminated manuscripts (or illuminated texts) being made. They were mostly copies of the gospels and scripture. These books were so well made and so well taken care of that some survive now more than a millennium later. But the process of how they were made is what drew my attention. Prodigal amounts of money would be spent collecting the most expensive dyes and inks and even gold and jewels for the book. Carefully crafted leather would be made to bind and protect the pages. hundreds of animal hides would be painstaking stretched taking several weeks each for the pages. And then the actual work would begin of copying down the text, designing the paintings and Inlaying the book with gold. It would take several years with many people helping to complete these works of art. To me bringing the gold and the silver and the inks and dyes and page after page is what we can do. We can study the word of god make every sacrifice we can (these literal treasures were not cheap) to provide the things god needs to turn our souls into beautiful illuminated texts. Every turn of a page of the scriptures is another page for god to write on. Every moment spent pondering is a chance for god a dip of his brush into the ink pot. Those moments where we take the love we have learned and share it with others is an opportunity for god to inlay our hearts in precious gold and jewels. Reading the scriptures now and then can create a pretty page or a small pamphlet but years and years spent studying and reading and pondering and applying gives god hundreds of strokes with a brush, innumerable scratches of the pen and a vast treasure trove of gold to adorn our hearts with.

Your analogy really made me stop and think about the quality of the time I spend in the scriptures. It seems that in the past few years I have been rediscovering them. I feel like I was a child just playing in my mother’s jewelry box before. Putting on the pretty things and parading around, saying, “Look at me. I’m a princess.” Now, as you said, I am discovering that the jewelry box is an immense treasure trove of precious gems, large and small. I’m picking them up one by one and really examining them through my jewelers loop (ie the Holy Spirit) and discovering that these are not just pretty trinkets for me to wear to impress others and show them how I look while I am wearing them. They are an inheritance from a Heavenly King. Their worth is priceless and I will never tire of picking them up, carefully examining them and sharing them with my brothers and sisters. The more I wear and share them, the more I discover. I see others wearing valuable jewels as well and we joyfully exchange them with each other and give them to those who have none. Thank you for your insights into how very precious the scriptures are.

I really loved the discussion on Thomas & his experience with feeling the wounds in Christ's hands. I love how David said that Christ knew what Thomas's concern was, and then what Emily said about how "I'm not afraid of you being in that place. You bring that concern to me" - that is just so powerful! I think all too often we think that if we have questions or concerns or struggles that we can't go to Christ (or anyone) because it's better to have it all figured out or that we'll get judged if we have questions, when this isn't the case. Yes, it's great to have faith & trust, but Christ still welcomes and helps even if you do have concerns and questions. He's the best person to be able to address those and help you overcome them. Thank you for this!!

I've had those strength-enabling moments, too, Emily! They are holy and so comforting. It is when we are so vulnerable that God intervenes so sweetly. By the way - I would love a podcast about female disciples. Mary Magdalene was probably one of the greatest disciples who ever lived, and yet we don't often hear about her discipleship.

“When you look on the dictionary for the most important word, do you know what it is? It could be ‘remember.’ Because all of you have made covenants - to know what to do and you know how to do it - our greatest need is to remember. That is why everyone goes to sacrament meeting every Sabbath day.” - Spencer W. Kimball

HA, David!!! Great minds think alike!!! Like you, I always say about camping, "Why would we want to pretend to be homeless?!" Seriously, we spend upwards of half-a-million dollars on a house, and then we throw everything we own in our car and go sleep in a tent in the woods. I feel the same about Scouting: Shouldn't we be teaching our children to be successful in business, etc., rather than successful at Homelessness?!

The Priesthood of the Nephites was the Holy Order. There is no mention of the Aaronic or the Melchizedek priesthood in the Book of Mormon. They had the Holy Order, the fullness of the Melchezadek priesthood, and they ordained Elders, Priests and Teachers to this order. Genesis 14:25-40 (JST) and Alma 13 explain this pretty well. To call it something else does not seem to be scriptural.
