I have returned to the church last March. I was inactive for 9 years. I want you both to know how much you have helped me this year. I started my studies reading the New Testament and it is great that you have all of it on here (youtube). Plus I have kept up with each week's study for BOM. I love all you have done and thank you again! What a tremendous service PLUS your personalities are SO wonderful, loving, and insights spot on.

The Return to Virtue talk reminded me of Margaret D. Nadauld’s talk, The Joy of Womanhood, where she said, “Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.”

I loved the discussion starting at the 15:50 mark (and ending around the 27:20 mark) about making it through the journey of life. David said "The presence of a storm does not mean the absence of God", and I thought of the reverse -- the presence of God does not mean the absence of a storm. We all go through those "middle moments" in life and it's important to recognize the Lord's hand in our lives during those times. Reminds me of Sister Lisa Harkness's talk from the most recent General Conference: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2020/10/42harkness?lang=eng

This was my favorite part too! I remember being taught that the right thing is not always the easy thing, and that satan will fight against those who are doing what’s right, and how He never said it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it... etc. But I LOVE this example of that principle!

Thank you for capturing this discussion. It did speak volumes to me in the way that ... the presence of God does not mean the absence of a storm. We all go through more middle moments than we share with others... sometimes it is too personal to share or too precious to lose to someone else not understanding me because of my lack of ability to express myself well.

I am seeing miracles, tender mercies and blessings on the journey I began on July 31 (and before). I was diagnosed with stage IV uterine cancer and have been blessed beyond measure. I have seen the love of Heavenly Father for me in the "polishing" and I feel so honored to be in this position. I love how the scripture study/Come Follow me helps to strengthen not only my faith but many others too. Halfway through treatment, tests show great healing at this time. Heavenly and earthly angels are near and many prayers are flying. I do not know the outcome, but I know Heavenly Father's plan is the best! I feel that my work in the Temple and with the Single Adults in the Phoenix, Az West Valley Region (and Mesa, Gilbert, etc area) is not finished. The timing of this trial, while things are shut down, is perfect. I only hope to be an example of love and faith and share through social media, etc. (My sister, said yes, be a light! And I do glow in the dark!) Thank you for your insights, that strengthen me and my faith! Love to you both!

Air, Light and Steering As I studied the lessons from the book of Ether in the Book of Mormon, my heart is stirred to share some thoughts that came to me after hearing you two teach! The people of Jared had to have faith to board those barges partly because of the unknown. They had to have faith that God would make sure they had air. They had to have faith that those stones were going to stay lit. They had to have faith that they would in fact get to a promised land and not be swallowed up in the depths of the sea. Think about what that must have been… You are pretty happy where you are. Life is good. Jared comes up to you and he says, “The Lord wants us to move to a promised land.” “Where?” You ask. "Across the many waters." “How?” You ask. "In barges that we are going to build." He explains that they have to be tight like unto a dish. In faith you follow and build and work as you are told. Faith, nothing wavering! You follow… As the people of Jared start out they see that indeed they are able to keep fresh air in the barges and that in those moments when fear might over take them, they find those little stones glowing on either end of the barge. Stones touched by the finger of God. And the barges move because of the wind. In the lesson I listened to, they described this so well and talked about the feelings of faith those people had. I thought about us. We have trials too where Air and Light and Steering come into play. Have you ever been so distraught that you feel you can’t breathe? Have you then realized that God is there and you are brought to the surface and can catch some air? Have you been in the depths of despair and feel the darkness gathering around you and you look around and there is a glimmer of light (hope) peeking from the end of the barge, showing you Gods hand is in all things. And have you ever been in a situation where the journey seems hard and rough and you are completely unsure as to where you will end up or how this can possibly end well, and you hear the voice of God telling you that he will steer you to the place he needs you to be? Which will be blessed beyond belief. We too have the faith of the Jaredites. We too have the faith to be taken and blessed with the life giving air we need. We too have the faith to see the Lords hand in the beautiful, tender mercies we are given. We too have the faith to see God steering our life journey to the place (job, new home, good friends) we need to go. If we put our lives in His “barge” having faith, nothing wavering, we will rise up and see the Promised Land. God's barge is tight like unto a dish and will carry you through if you will let him! Climb on in there. Also, be sure your barge of faith is tight like unto a dish! Stay strong in your faith.

"The power of one girl...", the power or influence of one woman. My first thought in a virtuous way was Mother Theresa. The love, hope, kindness, and support she gave thousands is unmeasurable and was guided by God. She was truly a woman of God that loved all. That's the power of a woman, of God, that I wish I could be.

09:44 Commend yourselves to the Lord There comes a time when we can't secure our future anymore and so we just put our trust in God and keep up the faith. At the beginning of quarentine I discovered my husband no longer has a testimony of Jesus Christ. After going through all the stages of grief for what seemed like the loss of my future, I just have to commend myself to God and keep my faith in Christ strong. Gathering Zion means I still need to show love to my husband and see him as God sees him. I thank Heavenly Father weekly for you David and Emily. You have made such a big difference for me, helping me see Christ everywhere in scripture.

I come home to an empty house. I feel I have grown closer to the Lord and have not felt alone at all. I have felt guilty about feeling this way because I know so many people who are struggling My heart breaks for them. I also know that I'm going to have struggles but I hope that I hold onto this time in my life where the Tender Mercy has been total peace. I have learned that my struggles have brought me closer to the Lord and I am so grateful for those times when it's almost as though he's sitting here right by me. 14:23 - 17:46 This segment spoke so deeply to me as I thought of the Jaredites' journey in light of my journey during 2020. I want to be "tight like unto a dish" as I face life's soul-refining struggles! "The presence of a storm does not mean the absence of God" and "Those places of resistance are where revelation grows best." were key points that touched my heart. Being reminded on how the Jaredites responded was life-changing for me!

I met you Emily once at time out for women and I wanted to cry! 😂 but then I was so star struck I didn’t know what to say. “Like you don’t know me, but I feel like I know you and want to be like you when I grow up”. I struggle reading the scriptures. I think they’re terribly boring. But I listen to your videos and it makes me want to read. It has helped me so so much. I’m a young mom with 4 kids under 7 and it gets so tiring feeding everyone else spiritually. I mean I love painting glow in the dark rocks for ether and making barges out of salt dough... but every once in awhile it’s so nice to be fed spiritually. And I laugh and cry with you. You’ll never know how much you’ve touched my life but you’re amazing. Both of you.

@Carrie Dabb My husband picked up on the fact there are 16 stones and he feels they represent the 12 apostles, the First Presidency (3), and the Savior . The wording of the verse is general and not specific to the Jaradites. Seems like it is saying the "stones" are these 16 people given to all men, women and children so we don't have to walk through life in darkness:)

Laughing so hard around the 13:00 mark when you were talking about the rides at Disneyland and the poor couple that got on the Tower of Terror ride thinking it was the haunted mansion. The thing that resonated with me the most was around the 15:30 mark when Emily and David talked about this year 2020 feeling similar to the way that the Jaredites felt on their barges - now knowing when they would reach the promised land. It's difficult not knowing when this pandemic will ever end and it's nice to be able to relate in a small way to what the Jaredites must have been feeling. I also liked the part about finding the miracles in the MIDDLE of the journey rather than just wishing that the journey was over and the end would come.

Stopped at verse 9- where they did sing and praise the Lord all day. Love it so much. It reminds me of a great movie, Facing the Giants. Where a struggling football coach, changes things and begins to pray with his team. He said to his team, if we win, we praise the Lord. If we lose, we praise the Lord. So good.
@marcinilsson

Sometimes I wonder if they sang and praised without ceasing because if they stopped, they would immediately go in to fear or complaining; It was how they controlled their thoughts and feelings and faith. Nephi did the same thing after being tied up for 4 days on the ship during a terrible, frightening storm. It says in 1 Nephi 18:"...my wrists, and behold they had swollen exceedingly; and also mine ankles were much swollen, and great was the soreness thereof. 16 Nevertheless, I did look unto my God, and I did praise him all the day long; and I did not murmur against the Lord because of mine afflictions." I really believe this can be a strategy to maintain faith as much as it is evidence of great faith.

26:59 It is important to think of those great things and tender mercies. When my father died and seven years later when my mother died I was able to experience those great things. As hard as those experiences were, we as a family were so blessed. Both times we felt such love and peace and even moments of joy as we sat by their bedsides remembering fun and funny things. The fact that my parents raised with a knowledge that we were a forever family allowed us to have those moments of peace and joy. The Gospel and the Plan of Salvation are incredible blessings continually in my life, such a source of hope and peace!

I listen to you while I walk, so I think at 16 minute timestamp, the idea of the tight barges really struck me. Not only it just being 2020 with all it's challenges, but we are doing remodeling on my hubby's childhood home we bought and we have run into one challenge after the other and it has felt like we are drowning and buffeted sometimes and left alone. I have really had to evaluate my faith, and what my faith is in. This section has made me ask myself if I am tight like a dish in not giving in to the adversary because discouragement is real. My hubby summed it up one day. He said that he can feel that the more wicked the world is getting, the more the Spirit leaves the land. We need to try even harder to hold on especially during the storms and try to find those tender mercies. I do feel like it has brought us closer to God. Thank you so much for your videos. Becky

I haven't even finished watching yet, but this jumped out at me like never before, so I'm pretty sure it'll be my favorite part... around 15:15 when Emily talks about being tight like a dish and that no water could hurt them. In these trying times, that gave me so much comfort.

I love so many lessons, but I have to say I also love 16:00 the presence of a storm doesn’t mean the absence of the Lord. I believe right now we are all experiencing a bit of a storm. How grateful I am that I can feel the direction of the Lord and his tender mercies! We are very grateful for your time and insights. I always look forward to Mondays now.

When David said, That tender moment when we will FALL DOWN BEFORE THE LORD in the Promised Land someday... like the Jaredites bowed down upon the face of the land... and they did humble themselves and shed tears of JOY before the Lord. Emily also said, The Lord had been there they whole way! It won't be because of the place we've arrived at, it will be because of the place we've been. About 25:36 (before & after)

Can you discuss Ether 2:8-10? I find it rather astounding that in just 3 verses, Moroni (who saw our day) warns four times the exact same thing about the Americas: "whatsoever nation shall possess it shall serve God, or they shall be swept off when the fulness of his wrath shall come upon them." Are we full of iniquity enough for this to happen?

Thank you so much for this amazing lesson which really seemed like it was just for me and was a perfect reminder that the storms of life are often where we feel the lords presence the most. I needed the reminder to keep looking for the tender moments in my life as I ride my very own challenging storm. You never disappoint inasmuch as you have really opened the scriptures to me and helped me to VISUALIZE what I am studying which really brings them to life in a way that is exciting and real to me. I don't really do much Instagram ... and I don't comment here often, but you have literally saved our family from failing completely at Come Follow Me!!! By some act of fate, I found you in like February of the New Testament!! I began watching your videos 2-4x every single week. Your discussions provided MANY opportunities for me to share insights and discuss the New Testament with my co-workers and neighbors. I sent links to certain episodes to people of different faiths and they were always well received. I think the intro and new additions you offered in this particular video are an answer to several weeks of prayer because the comings and goings of 2020 have not only disrupted our time, but interest level of our young adult children!! I've struggled the past month+ to figure out how to restore the connection to these beautiful lessons ... and here you are offering concrete suggestions! Praying further that this is the real answer I've been seeking. I've been using clips of your videos in our lessons for the better part of two years. Eternally grateful that like the wife Kimber, we have been richly blessed for your efforts, dedication, depth of knowledge, ability to tell stories, and consistency!! I've spoke to dozens of people we know who are also listening to you every week. You're making a difference in real lives by bringing the good news of the gospel into our homes .... and we had a year to practice BEFORE coronavirus hit us. THANK YOU!!! :-)

Were the barges connected? If they weren’t that would be so scary to get in that barge and not be certain that they would end up in the same place. Was there a guarantee that they would end up together? Did they all end up at the same time and the same place? There would be such rejoicing to see these friends and family again after being separated for almost a year.
@mariagil9742
@mariagil9742 3 года назад
oh thanks...I had the same thought. Is it possible that they rejoiced because one miracle was that they arrived all together at the same place and time even with the tempest and furious wind? I think that they praised the Lord for that miracle as well. No one of the eight barges was missed and arrived in a different place. It is the same promise for all of us if we are faithful, we will arrive at the Celestial Kingdom, our promised land. So powerful.

17:00-18:00- How ironic that our prophet has just counseled us to be grateful...to praise God and #givethanks daily! That’s the response of the Jaredites as they were inside the barges and being tossed about in the fierce winds. “They did thank and praise the Lord all the day long”. I love that our prophet is so in tune to revelation that will help us! I love that his “prescription” for hope and healing is to flood the earth with gratitude!!

So I’ve considered the importance of praise for a long time. I feel our fellow Christians have a lot to teach us of course he importance of that. I appreciated the fact that ether says that they “sang praises “. I feel like singing songs- our often songs of praise and they are prayers unto god. Sometimes, I begin my prayers reciting words from hymns. Keeping songs in my heart help me also to praise him all day long. :)

19:30-21:30 I had a thought that they were all in separate barges. Without steering and with great storms and wind, they would not have been able to switch barges or go visit each other. So they were kind of isolated. They were probably praising the Lord after seeing that their families and friends were saved as well. Etc...

I love the reminder to be grateful for the tender mercies instead of just glad that the challenging circumstance is over. Years ago I traveled to Haiti in the midst of a huge upheaval and war zone to bring our adopted son home who had significant medical issues, and I truly was just grateful to be on U.S. soil again (wanted to kiss the ground, for sure), and it's not that I was not grateful for the tender mercies but I was first grateful for the physical arrival. I want to reverse that in my life.

This got me thinking about storms in my life!! This describes some really bad storms, but the storms were driving them towards the promised land. Taking them where God need them to be. Answering their prayers to be in a choice land. It reminds me of what President Nelson said in this last conference, “Turbulent times are opportunities for us to thrive spiritually.” The storms in our lives can bless us like the Brother of Jared and his family!!

The story of the Jaredites is a lot like the story of the Israelites who journeyed in the wilderness for eighty years. While we have a tendency to only be looking at our physical destinations, the Lord looks at who we are becoming. To the Lord, the journey of the heart is the one that matters. The times we look back upon our lives, we can see the tender mercies that Nephi describes. Laman and Lemuel, in contrast, could not see them. They had only focused on what they had lost. It is easy to fall into that trap of what I call spiritual autism. It is why gratitude for even the smallest things we notice the Lord doing in our lives is so important, particularly in times of trial. Those little things are like the "Ur" or "urim" (the Hebrew word for light or lights) that help us a long when the storms hit. The transliteration from Hebrew is actually "Ohr" and "Ohrim" (light and lights) and can also be used to mean "order." I also learned that Jewish Rabbinical scholars believe that Noah's "window" (the Hebrew "tsohar") in Genesis 6:16 was actually a "stone" that lit the ark. Noah's family had to have light in the mist of their storm. Perhaps this might be the story that the brother of Jared was citing when pleading to the Lord to "touch these stones" (Ether 3:4). I also believe that if we strive to repent, stay true to our covenants and live in a manner worthy to have the Holy Spirit in our lives, that even midst of what appears to be chaos, we can still perceive "order" by knowing that God is in charge, that there is a purpose for our storms (that they might be "pushing" us somewhere we need to be) and that all things will be for our good.
