38 planes, 7000 people, 20 or so animals landed in Gander. The mayor had a telephone system to alert the town. "Put the kettle on we've got company coming" Everyone in town jumped in to help, there are only 500 hotel beds, so most people were put up in auditoriums, houses, schools. Food , clothes, medicine anything that was needed was provided. People were allowed in homes to take showers etc. They came as strangers and 5 days later they left as family. ( by the way Newfoundlanders really do talk like that)

This is a beautiful show, every single character is real life person, and the town itself embraced the show and was one of the first place it was performed. Id love to see more reactions to the show it's so good😊

There's no really one Main character, the closest thing to it is Beverly Bass played by Jenn Colella who was nominated for a Tony for this role. Highly suggest you check out her song Me and the Sky, it's amazing!

You should really react to more of this musical, it is an ensemble show so there aren’t really “leads” and there are only around 13 people in the cast and all the stories get told absolutely beautiful! The accents are actually pretty accurate, there are some cast members actually from Canada. You should really really watch the solo song “Me and the Sky” from this show. It tells the story very well and the vocals by Jenn Colella are absolute perfection!

This show is probably the best show I've seen on Broadway. Such a wonderful, emotional story packed into 100 minutes. I've met Astrid, the lady in the pink blouse, at a workshop and she was very sweet. She's one of the cast members actually from Canada.

In regards to the accent they are actually quite accurate as Newfoundlanders are notorious in Canada for having a super thick accent that's hard to understand compared to the rest of the country, probably because the population was mainly made up of Irish immigrants
@robarjay

Irish, English, Scottish and French actually, but yes the Accent in this play was the best I have ever seen done by any one that is not a Newfoundlander. (I would know, I am one)

Watch out! Before you criticize learn! The accent you found clownish is REAL, they actually did a really good job with the accent. It is no more fake then Southern American accents. Canadians don't all sound alike.

Petrina Bromley's was real as she is a Newfoundlander. The rest worked with a voice coach but I didn't find many that seem accurate to my ear. Most seem more Irish than anything. Although Irish is a big part of our accent it's only part.

This show is amazing. All of the people in the cast switch between playing people that have been stranded to people that live in Gander. Every character is a real person. The creators visited the town and interviewed a ton of people. It's really amazing

Come from away is one of my favs. It’s one of the two shows to make me cry (and I’m basically a robot so that’s not very often) it’s full of emotion, jokes and an amazing group of stories. Definitely recommend. It’s now on Apple TV so you can watch the stage version there!

This musical was absolutely amazing. I had the pleasure of seeing it last year. But i think everything you worried about from this number would be completely solved if you watched this entire show live. They do such a beautiful job at making this show respectful and funny and sad and beautiful all in only 100 minutes!! It truly is a beautiful show

Come From Away is probably my favourite show, it just sucks you in and has you holding your breath the entire time, and it’s funny and heart wrenching at the same time. I’ve seen it twice and as soon as theatres are open again I’m going to see it a third time ❤️ it’s really interesting as well as a lot of the cast double up and play multiple characters, but you can always follow who’s who. The band on stage is also phenomenal, especially during Screech Out at the end

I had the great pleasure of seeing this show and it’s AMAZING. I had chills at least every 5 minutes. I was laughing all the time and boy was I crying. I saw it with school and when I tell u every single person was weeping- there were times of booming laughter and times of absolute deafening silence. It was so breathtaking and it deserves so much more love.

I wish this story was more widely known. Canadian hospitality, plain human hospitality at its best. The music is amazing. I’ve listened to the soundtrack sooo many times. One day I wish to see it live. I don’t feel like the number of characters takes away. All are fleshed out because they are real portrayals. I would recommend a full listen privately or on video.

I got to see this show last year and it was phenomenal. Seeing this cast of diverse people in constant movement telling the true stories of these people during this tumultuous moment in time, of people coming together in this crisis, it's beautiful. The show is very much an ensemble experience with multiple pieces of different stories working together. Some of the actors will play more than one part, but the show is very good at distinguishing when that is happening through costume changes and accents. This is the opening number and introduces you to the location and the spirit of the people in this town on the morning before the news hits. When it does, you feel the weight of it. The show in my opinion does a good job of having humor without it being too much or being retractive, because the humor comes from the humanity of these true stories. To me, the core of the show is in exactly that, in the humanity of giving a helping hand when others are in need. Of people, complete strangers from all over the world, coming together in a time of so many unknowns. And if the show didn't have humor, I think it'd be missing a huge piece of that humanity.

For a good back story of this play, check out ‘Gander’s Ripple Effect: How A Small Town’s Kindness Opened on Broadway.’ For more intensive history, look up Operation Yellow Ribbon, which is the name of the efforts to land all the planes. The accents are Newfoundland, which is distinct from the rest of Canada, and not easy to do.

I saw this show at Shea's theater in Buffalo NY with some school friends. It's definitely in my top 3 shows along with Rent and Les Miserables. I cry every time I listen to any song from this show. Brilliant production... each cast member play several different characters during the show. It works. The stage show runs without an interval, so most the cast is on stage for the entire show. A true story about the extraordinary generosity and compassion of a tiny town on the East coat of Newfoundland, during the 9/11 tragedy. This show was later made into movie version... I've lost count of how many times I've watched it.

It is a gorgeous show. Beautifully balanced between the Newfoundlanders and the come from aways, they seamlessly play all kinds of folks. It is not the least confusing. 250 planes landed across Canada. And we all knew what had already happened, so we didn’t know if we were landing planes that terrorists were on. It was a scary time. Gander took a high percentage considering their small size and population.

So the way they covered the subject was by interviewing the people who went to Gander for the 10th anniversary. The majority of the named characters are real people, and if you watch the interviews with the people there, their stories are very true to what they had told them. There are a few named characters who are a mix of accounts, but all the ones introduced in this number IIRC are real people.

It's pretty amazing. At the time, no one knew _HOW MANY_ more planes were hijacked, how many more planes still in the air were enormous bombs. Can you imagine the fear at _every airport_ where those US-bound planes were redirected to? Every air traffic controller in Canada, Europe, South America, wondering if the redirected plane they're guiding down into their city _right now_ is a bomb... Can't imagine.

I saw the original west end cast perform this show last December and it is one of the most unique and well done shows that is on Broadway right now. It is actually very very funny but it doesn't take away from the show it actually adds to it in my opinion. And although it obviously has a lot of very emotional and serious moments in it it's a very joyful and hopeful musical that just shows how amazing human connections and compassion can be. I could talk for days on days about how amazing every aspect of the musical is the band, the set, the acting it's all brilliant but I would really suggest you watch it yourself it's really worth it. If you are looking for specific performances I would suggest either me and the sky which is a solo song sang by a captain of one of the flights captain Beverly who was actually the first female pilot for a passenger plane in American airlines or a medley performance of some of the songs that the west end cast did.

Proud Canadian here. This is a fantastic show- the characters are based on real-life townspeople from Gander, and when they took the show to Gander, the whole town showed up, and they absolutely loved it. Most of the cast play dual roles- townsfolk and "plane people", as the passengers soon came to be known as, and there's no difficulty telling who is who. And the accent that you thought was "a caricature of a Canadian" is absolutely real, me b'y. Search videos on speaking Newfie. There's also a tradition where a "come from away" can become an honorary Newfoundlander. This is a clip where the townspeople took some of the passengers to a bar- I think it was the Legion- and did the ceremony. Have fun with this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TPrjrRVPWKY.html

I saw the show a couple years ago, and I was actually smiling for much of the time! Because there's quite a bit of situational humor (as you see a little in this first song) and well as heartwarming, human connection moments. But there are quite a few gentle, somber moments that address some of the tragedy that happened, as well as what happened after - the increased prejudice against Muslims, the fear of airplane travel, etc. The show's cast actually performed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in NY, so it has the stamp of approval from them in terms of tasteful portrayal.

It is a true story, and most of the characters are real.. some are amalgamations of a group of people. The stories are true and the music is true to the music of the Canadian east coast. It doesn't get confused because each character is vital to the story. Watch the entire thing. I hate to tell you this but that is what Newfies sound like.. not like other Canadians at all.
