I work for a isopod company in the USA, the springtails will be easier to keep if you pair them with the isopods! They will break down the isopod waste and keep the soil fresh (they also eat the same things as the isopods). They are really cool and you would be surprised at how much your plant knowledge can be applied to isopods. Also it was really cool to see isopods that you have available in the uk!

Isopods are super easy! I just keep mine in a plastic shoebox and I don't do anything for them for weeks at a time, and they're still fine. Way easier than many of my house plants! There's great videos on how to keep them on RU-vid. Fun fact, they're not insects, they're crustaceans!

I second this! I would love to do a plant swap in my area there are not very many I’ve seen only 1 in my area and it was still a 40 min drive away! I would love to be able to host one and create one that we would be able to do every few months!!

The springtails should be fine in enclosed terrariums as long as you have enough plants to refill the oxygen. Many people completely seal terrariums shut and the isopods, springtails, and other small insect/bugs and live for years like that no problem. Serpa Design on YT does terrariums all the time, and his bugs are fine as long as they have enough plants in the jars. From my personal experience, I tend to lose springtails when I let the soil dry out too much or don't feed them enough. :/

Just a tip, you might want to store the springtail food in the freezer. Grain based springtail food can attract mites that could overrun your springtail colony. The freezer keeps the mites from getting in the grain and reproducing or persisting in it. Springtails and isopods are great. Be careful though or it becomes a type of "gotta collect them all!". Have fun and I love this video style!

The leather hangers look interesting, but I feel like they aren't very flexible with different pot sizes. Macrame hangers are more forgiving with sizes I feel. And if anyone is going to say stuff about leather being bad, leather is a byproduct of the meat industry (at least a big part of it). If you want to advocate for better treatment of animals support meat alternatives and stuff like that ^^

oh certainly, that's why he usually sells them with the pots included, similar to if you bought a hanging cache pot. I just said I didn't need them as I have so many pots at home already

Springtails just show up in all my (airtight!) terrariums and I don't do anything😆 I also find common grey house isopods crawling around my place every now and then and I'll just chuck 'em in one of my terrariums. I guess they're happy cause they're freaking huge!

Oh no, I don't blame you...I was exhausted after just the 1 day! I bought 2 small monkey tail cactus that I'm going to pot up together and a gorgeous pepperomia hope. Both wish list plants and then Phil fell in love with a dieffenbachia reflector so we also got one of those!

Great video Emma, loved watching the RHS festival through your eyes, I was very tempted to go but work came in the way 😔 Hatacoa silver is a really stunning begonia, Dibley's do them often 😉 Like you, I was also quite confused while researching this one but they do grow vertically which I love ❤️

The prices on those terrariums... Wow! I know the price of metal has risen, but 180 £ for a small amount of glass and iron? I wonder what the profit margins are on those. I suppose the fact that they are all handmade will make it very hard to keep the costs down, but still. Lovely video, though! Don't mind me being a negative Nelly.

yeah I spoke to the guy about the prices because I also found them to be quite steep... but as a handmade item in a small business, like you said, it's hard to keep the costs down. Hence why I went for the smallest one he had because that was all I could afford

I don't think I've actually moved them but from prop straight to pon... yeah now I'm a bit nervous, I might take some safety cuttings just in case!

Hi Emma, I'm having a real fungus gnat infestation right now that is driving me crazy. I've tried mosquito bit tea, I've tried hydrogen peroxide 3% AND have sticky traps all over my house!!! My question is can I transfer all my plants to either solely water or solely vermiculite? I want to eradicate the use of soil, but don't have the budget to be able transfer them all to leca? I really hope you can reply and help a plant parent in need 😢 P.S Love love love your content

oh no! fungus gnats are such a pain! If you don't want to go and transfer everything, I'd highly recommend giving beneficial nematodes a try first. I did a video fairly recently on them and how I use them to get rid of fungus gnats!
