Comet Goldfish Care - Watch BEFORE Buying

Comet Goldfish care should start with giving the fish an adequate size aquarium. These fish can grow over 12 inches long and give off a large bio-load in fish tanks. Goldfish like to eat excessively and that results in lots of waste given off into the water. The higher, the volume of water the less likely the aquarium is to bomb out with ammonia overload. That’s why it’s crucial to give Goldfish a large, massive aquarium.

➡ Best Lighting - amzn.to/3KNx8Yz
Along with aquarium size the size of your aquarium filter is also a huge deal. The amount of gallons per hour that your filter filters, the water will be crucial. With aquariums of that size usually a canister filter is what is used. The common goldfish does best in a large aquarium with a canister filter.
It’s also very important to be changing decent amount of water in the aquarium every so often. The goldfish give off amounts of nitrate in the fish tank, and that needs to be removed manually or by plants. You can use plants to remove the nitrates or do water changes manually.
Taking care of the common goldfish is in a hard it’s more or less about the size of an aquarium and equipment you need. Goldfish give us so much waste that it makes it difficult to keep them in a glass box as a pet.

I have a sealife coral reef TATTOO arm sleeve with lots of Color. It promotes against Super Trawler nets, plastics (single use bags, bottles) and offshore oil drilling. It says "No Pot" with a Crab, don't boil them alive, tu-no fish, sealife not seafood :). Watch SeaSpiracy,

I won a goldfish at the county fair, Ferris. He’s finally grown big enough to go into my 125 that I purchased just for goldfish. So excited to finally be done with the setup this weekend. Will be using the 20 gallon grow out for a betta 😊 Maybe instead of outlawing it entirely there should be a screening process and not sold in box stores, exclusively breeders since most people here in the southern states do keep them in ponds, like koi.

Really glad I found your channel! Common and Comet goldfish have a special place in my heart. They are the first fish my Dad set up for us as kids. And I loved to win them at the carnival and let my kids do the same. I've never kept anything larger than a 10 gallon aquarium, so they always had to be re-homed once they became too big. The pandemic came and I started keeping betta fish with neons. Learned about sponge filters and live plants. But I did make a patio pond and place three "feeder" goldfish in it. Fall came and I wasn't confident in keeping them outside in the midwest winter at such a small size. I kept them in a 10 gallon tank with gravel, anubias plants, sponge and mechanical filter. They ate betta pellets, duckweed and guppy grass. They grew to three inches in 6 months! I just purchased my first big tank (40 gallons) to finish growing them out for an in ground pond come next spring. Now that I am older and more educated on fish care/keeping. I agree that the fish stores in the U.S. must stop calling one gallon bowls "goldfish bowls". They should be outlawed at the carnival as well. I think a guppy would be an easier fish "prize" to maintain. And those half and one gallon betta aquariums...No way should those be sold either. Anyways, thanks so much for making these videos and for your facebook page!

So, my kid had a beta. It was really sick when we got it and after a year long battle it died. She was devastated,(had a fish funeral with flowers and everything.) but honestly, I was relieved for the suffering fish and myself because of how much time and effort it took to try and save this fish. Well, we went to a fair and they wanted to try and win a fish... They had an entire bucket of balls and missed every shot. I was so thankful but they had one ball left and gave it to me to toss. You can see where this is going... I tossed that damn ball and wouldn't you know it. I won two goldfish... I couldn't say no to my kid so I brought them home set up the old 5 gallon tank and put the fish in. So, for these fish I should get a much larger tank than a 5 gallon, correct? I'm not sure what kind they are as both of them look different. One is chubby and short tailed and the other is longer with a V shaped tail.. I'm trying to get ahead of the curve and really wouldn't mind getting a larger tank. I was thinking of getting a corner tank with a stand. Would that be acceptable if it was of the appropriate size? I haven't had a goldfish for a long time. The last one I had was also from a fair and lived for six years in a SpongeBob tank.. 😭 I feel so bad for that fish, I'm surprised it lived for so long. I loved it and after it died, I stuck to betas. Now I'm in love with these goldies! 😅 And want to take the best care of them as possible. Any help or pointers are appreciated! 👍

Would for sure go bigger than 5 gallon. Made the mistake of trying to keep my goldfish (had 3) in that tank (I was young), only one left now. I’m in the process of moving my fair goldfish I got 8 years ago from my 5 gallon to a 20 gallon. Goldfish get big, and poop a lot. They need more space. Also, DO NOT release them into the wild. They will devastate the ecosystem.

Just bought 5 for a dollar yesterday for the outdoor pond. Currently have them in a 40 gallon breeder planted, with a bristlenose and duckweed, until they stand a better chance against the big egret birds that stalk the edges of the pond. It has started to freeze in this area around this time though here in Texas, and I plan to invest in a larger "overwinter " tank, as my pond is not deep enough to sustain a reasonable temp in a good freeze. Been a fan of yours for a while brother. Cheers,

Bought my kid 2 common goldfish and then started doing deeper research as I wasn't vibing with the tiny tank we purchased them in. Hooooweee am I glad I did! They're in a bigger tank now, about to get planted up, and when we move in the spring they'll be upgraded to a pond. Have fallen hard for the hobby, and hope to do these guys justice. Then we'll do research into what would be the RIGHT fish for the 2 tanks we now have!

Great information, thank you! I have a (free) 40 gallon overwinter tank a for my ~500gallon pond fish up in Alaska. The 40 gallon tank seemed big at first, but then the fish got in there and it started looking a bit small. I had a few medium sized fish in the pond, but I'm pretty sure the ravens around snapped all but one =(. Ended up getting a lot of little comets from petco for the kids without knowing how big they can get! Now Im on this steep learning curve, but finding it all to be a rather rewarding challenge! Plus I like the comets. They are sleek, orange water bullets!

But im just a little sad about the fact that they never been cared for in the way they should be, and their tank is to small and they should be in ponds. I actually have a string of coincidences. I live on a bayou in south Louisiana. I got tired of buying worms. So I started my own worm farm. European worms. Well, recently, I got back into wanting to keep fish. So I got a 20-gallon long and did a planted tank and fishless cycle. It finally cycled. Was planning on doing schools of tetra. Still hadn't decided on the fish. Well, last week found an incredible deal on a 75-gallon tank, cabinet stand, canister filter, and a slew of stuff. So I got it. It's all clean now, and I was just waiting for an undergravel filter plate to come in today to start setting it up. My daughters left me with the grandkids and went to garage sales. So 20 gal. Finally cycled and asked the girls to stop by petstore and get me 3 comet goldfish. They got some awesome ones. Kids love them. Got them in the tank and decided. That's the fish I want. I have always got fruit, greens, and now the worm to take care of them. I also have blood worms and othe good food for them here already. Plus the 75 gal. Tank that will be for them, too. A string of coincidences for raising these 3 fish properly. BTW, I love the way comets are beautiful. Loved this video and wanted to tell my story.

Thanks for making this video. I was looking at making a small lotus pond in my backyard that was not going to be large enough for keeping koi. My grandma kept a comet goldfish in a bowl and it never got bigger than the ones you see at the store, and I didn’t think it was going to be a good fit. I’m shocked to hear that they grow large, and I’m sad to know that her fish was actually being abused. She really liked it a lot, but it was a lot harder to get resources about fish in the 1990s. You basically just had to trust what the guy at Walmart or whatever told you about your fish. Now that I know that goldfish grow larger, I’m going to be doing a lot more research into which types of goldfish I want for my pond.

The folks at the mom and pop pet store in my county really helped me dodge a bad starter move. I never realized goldfish were so "messy" lol. They pointed me to a Betta fish, because they are very easy to take care of, and are low maintenance. If anybody out there is looking to start an aquarium, and I say a Betta fish is a great way to go. Btw the tank is only a gallon, but it came with a filter and some quick start bacterial fluid, so really anybody can start! Great video and greetings from Texas!

Honestly I would not recommend any goldfish-- fancy or single tail-- to any new fish keeper, and nobody unless you have room for at least a 40 gallon tank. While comets need more room, they aren't as prone to health issues like many fancy breeds can be. Don't forget clear rubbermaid bins are an excellent way to keep frogs and fish in temporary containers or long term for cheap.

Water parameters were good thanks to Amazon swords and pothos clippings, but the shubunkins needed more space to swim. I got a 75-gallon that is only cycled enough to put 5 ish in so far without the nitrites spiking, but when I bought the tank I fell in love with a butterfly telescope goldfish. I don't have room for a 4th talk to go along with my 75,55 and 29 gallon I use for dwarf frogs and tropicals!

Chris there are many other options than aquariums from any goldfish species. Start at Home Depot or TSC. Large plastic livestock waterers or in the ground plastic garden pools are great for pond fish. Walk through the Kids section at a retail store or Walmart. A large, the large size, kiddie wading pool is great. Works in the dining room and a person can scape them just like a large aquarium. And roomy enough for four or five comets, commons, wakins, or well, any other goldfish which will grow large. This is a extra fun way to use your head and create a better than average home for goldfish that can grow to 12 ins. and live twenty plus years.

I need to give them away aquarium is 10 gals and they have started to grow. They are so pretty and well taken care, but can't afford to get a bigger tank. Any ideas?

Great video of sharing the truth about goldfish, how many millions of people have brought home a goldfish won at the fair, and didn't have a clue how to keep it alive. Me. I later got hooked on beautiful aquariums and fish.

I got 14 feeder goldfish for my crayfish, gave 12 of them back because my crayfish stopped eating them. Kept the smallest goldfish cause i felt bad, he's 6 inches now and 2nd animal in my room with a personality. I recently got a bag of dead feeders and a few live ones were mixed in, only one survived and their colors are starting to really pop out (black and silver). I have a 55 gal bin for them and hopefully in the future I can get a 75. I also learned the hardway that thinner aquarium plants will absolutely not last with goldfish, dude tore up the plants on the grazing. I already found a private aquarium that takes in larger fish just in case the silver goldfish does live konger than I'm expecting.

I rescued 3 goldfish that were abandoned in a rental property. One is a black moor but I'm not sure what the other two are? How can I figure it out?

What kind of fish should I get for a 10 gallon tank. Yes I just bought 5 comets and I told her I only have a 10 gallon tank. I really only wanted 2 or 3 then she told me about the special 5 for 5 bucks. When they get bigger I will put them in my 1ac pond. I hope they don't get ate by the big fish.

I accidentally got 5 comets for my 20 gallon. I clean the filter every day and the water maintains crystal clear and they seem to be growing and happy. I definitely need to upgrade my tank or re-home soon. I also have a pleco and 3 snails (large enough the goldfish don't really bother) have you had a rabbit snail with a comet goldfish or heard of it ?

hello yes thankyou for making this helpful video, ihave some comets at the moment in a 100 litre pond and i have had a couple in the past that survived some pretty dirty cold weather at one point, i am a big fan of the comet, i also like your plats, my immediate first instinct thought when seeing this video is i wonder why you dont swap the tv and the couches positins so your looking at the windows and the plantsd and the tv all in one go, ho knows im sure there is more to it than i can see and i suspect you have already watched some feng shui instruction vides so thats my only note, may be backwards because in southern hemisphere, peace cheers, i always htought the comet was just the normal style of ish and then one day the pet shop lady told me that the comet goldfish is like the big silly labradore big yellow dog making a mess everywhere kinda dog fish equivelant so yes it helps to think of having a large backyard and a system of good shovels for these guys, thanks again for making a coolvideo about comets i found it helpful, i just setup my next tank and might go with some shrimps or a yabby

I literally found one on the street inside a bubble tea cup and took it home. I bought a 23L aquarium and all the stuff, but I couldn't do the research previously and after watching this video, I'm pretty scared. Any suggestions? I don't think I'll have the space and money for that big of an aquarium.

Have a 5 gallon tank that I had filled with plants and the intention of getting shrimp, my parents came home from a white elephant party with 5 commet gold fish. One died couple hours in probably due to the stress, they other 4 have eaten mostly everything and are growing pretty fast! I bought a used tank that I’m going to have them transferred to since my one is wayyyy too small. It’s a 29 gallon tank, I know it’s still going to be too small as they grow but it’s all I have room for rn. Planing on moving in 2024 so I will keep a larger tank in future. Love my fish but hate that they are being given away like toys

Once you're able to take care of them your way it'll be less stress and way more fun. Some people don't understand the difference between existing and thriving for fish, it sucks.

We were given three comet goldfish, having no prior experience with aquariums (other than when I was a kid). Kind of unsure what to do now. We have a small to medium tank now, but what do we do? Offer them to someone for free? How do we know they won't be harmed? It's a tough one, our kids aren't going to like it either way. 😢
