This product makes it possible for a person in an apartment, who doesn't own any woodworking tools, to start raising their own food independently. For that reason I have to give the company credit for doing a great thing for society.
50 seconds in and i wan to complement that you refer to notes throughout all your videos. it helps people like me that cant remember every little detail.. 100% applause
Great review! So honest. I love when people tell me what they know and honest about what they don’t. I’m definitely ordering one about to start my small quail breeding out on my balcony. Thanks 🙏🏾
Watched your review (which was excellent) and went to check out this set up in hopes I could avoid the labor of building your version (very cool instruction vid by the way). I was SHOCKED at the cost of this plastic set up. It IS very nice but holy moly! I guess I'm sticking with the plan to head for the hardware store tomorrow to get materials and start building YOUR cage set up. Thanks for showing us how! ❤
I have two of them. It took 4 hours to put the five layer breeder cage together. I have 650 in that cage. The wooden cages I have built are great for grow out cages. If you are going to use them it will save you about 300 dollars when time and labor is considered. Benefit of the wooden you can buy stuff as you go. The plastic cages are easy to clean and will out last the wooden ones by years. The upfront cost is high if taken at face value. However the money you save in the long run between ease of feeding and watering far outweigh the the costs in my opinion
Think about the labor it takes to build a wood cage, wood and wire are crazy expensive, i just built one 5 tiers high and with watering system cost roughly 500.00 plus add labor. Much cheaper to have somebody else do the work and deal with the headache.
Most things you buy for your homestead, such as solar panels, batteries, seeds, fruit tree starts, these cages, a rabbit hutch, etc pay off after two to four years. If you can do it consistently for a while, then you're in the green.
been himming and hawing over this for a while now and just did it. ordered a 2 tier system to start and ill add on as needed. little bummed its on back order but only for 2 weeks. cant wait to get it. Thanks for this Terry
Based on your presentation, I believe the cases are well designed. They are good for people who just want to raise quails for home consumption. Thank you for sharing.
Love your page!! Full of great info.. Just ordered the 4 level model, and have a 100 hatching eggs on the way! We raised quail a few years back for food and eggs.. Can't wait to try this system out! Thanks for helping me make up my mind on what to do!
I had a few too many one night and ordered the 4 tier set. Obviously I could have built something cheaper myself, but I do love it. As the flock expands I will be building my own though...probably. You have to admit they are super cute.
I have to agree, that for what it is, it's a decent setup. I have made a few modifications as seen in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ImfVz5ILbZk.html and it's working out even better. Thanks for the comment!
Great video!!! We are playing a drinking game every time you say umm we drink 🍺 I’m getting into the quail breading and your videos are full of great info ℹ️ Thank you 🙏🏽
Good review Terry. I agree with your two suggestions: 1. baffle in water container 2. Bottom row is too low (I’m like you getting down is not the problem it’s the getting up😆). I’m flip flopping between this and metal (I have 3 sets of metal and they sit higher, about the same as your wood cages). Thanks again
I did order a table with legs 24” long . We just assembled with my husband . Wow it is not easy to do it , but too low for my back . I do not know will be with the quails . Still are too small for it and is not ready to hutch . My first time to take care of quails . I had canaries but long time done with them. It is a lot work . I hope with this cages will be much easier .
Wonderful, my roommate with most the wood tools moved out so this might be it! But I really enjoy the taller ones you’ve done. I’ve got some deciding to do 👍
We bought this a couple months ago and my big issue with it is that my quail's poop does not fall through the flooring. It builds up and we have been having to use a nail to poke it through. The eggs actually get caught on their poop piles and won't always roll down. I also think the compartments should be bigger. It is easy to move and clean though.
Great video. You mentioned the plastic is UV good to go for outside but you did not touch on predator proof. I'm looking to start raising some and it will be in my pole barn wich is open to the possibility of some predators. Any thoughts on that?
How often did you have to fill the watering container and feed troughs for this cage? I am just getting started with quail to for now be a hobby, but hearing from my co-workers it sounds like they would be interested in the eggs and the meat so I'm looking for a cage that has the most automated capabilities as possible. I really appreciate the detail you go into in this video.
Hi Terry! How are you? I am starting to rise quails here in Brazil, and i'd like to know if you prepare their food at home or you buy it from some company? If do at home could tell me how? Or show me how to make my on formula? Tks in advance.. Congrats on your contempt..
Terry, really enjoy your informative, no nonsense videos! Can you please provide a total assembly cost for your comparably sized (total number of birds) hand-built cage as compared to the 3-tier or 5-tier Comfortplast system? Thank you!
I have learned that it is important for the quail to have sand bath available. Do you recommend placing a container with sand inside the cages for them?
I do give my birds a washtub of sand to dust bathe in about every 3 or 4 weeks. It' s enjoyable to watch them kick around in there. Thanks for the comment!
It seems to me that you could build a small deck or box to set the cages up on. This would give you a spot to store shavings or a rodent resistant container for feed or other supplies as well as make it FAR easier to access the lower level of the cages.
Thanks for the review Terry. These are nice cages but I like your DIY cages so much better. Wood frames, with attention to detail on the joinery (mating surfaces) sealed with gap filling and long lasting construction adhesive, and all wooden members properly painted with a quality epoxy coating should last many years, and replacement parts are readily available and inexpensive, if needed.
Great comment. I built one like his and the satisfaction of building something yourself is good. I build my own bee hives too. Old carpenters need a hobby with wood, nails, etc. This channel is quite good
Great review, I just ordered one. I’m fairly new at raising quail. I heard you mention vitamins and things you add to the water. What do you add? Do you have a video that covers it? Thanks!!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I add a vitamin electrolyte supplement to my birds water as explained in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mtlaEEvXCho.html
Is it possible to remove the dividers or cut them partially out to make them into larger cages? If not in your opinion was is a comfortable number per section? Thanks very much. I am looking into other options since the metal ones I purchased seems to be causing injuries to my birds. They seem to have sharp edges ☹
Do the birds have trouble reaching the bottom of the feed tray when the feed gets low? Looking into these for here in Panama as it is really humid ( some times 97% ) and wire rusting is a major problem.
Great review. I'm not much of a DIYer, so this kit setup is a good choice for me. The one question I have is how do you set up or use dust baths with the plastic cages?
Terry do you find a problem using the nipple waterer with week old chicks? If so what's your solution or preferred waterer for that first week. Automotive drip pans great size but no lip to take care of excess water spillage.? Thanks for the review. Tough to justify at that cost. I would have $1200 in just my breeder cages and triple that I in my grow out pens.
Thanks for a great video! I think I would like to build larger units for a lower density. What would you recommend as the most efficient feeder. The feed price to Los Angeles are quite high so if this is the most efficient feeder it might be worth the space compromise. Thank you again for your videos. Subscribed.
Why do someone keep quail in small housing and other have large outside housing? Is it preference? Meat or eggs? Breeding? Thank you and I appreciate it.
Hello! Thank you so mush for this video, price is too high for plastic , but I like it. My question is every unit got water box or I’d like to buy 5 sections it’s be 1 water box per unit or 5 box per unit ? Thank you
Hi Terry, new to your channel and videos so I apologize if this is a repeat question that has already been answered. I notice that you house your quail in what appears to be a garage or some kind of inside structure. Do you have any concerns with histoplasmosis with raising birds this way? Just looking for a best practice as I'm just getting into raising quail and trying to get it all figured out. Thanks you!
I have to say lol.. I've watched your vids for awhile and I SWEAR you could be my daughter's grandfather's twin lol.. Shes 26 and said is that pawpaw? When did he get quail 😂😂😂
I think you could just remove the casters and build a frame whatever height you needed and set the metal frame on and put the casters on the bottom of the frame. No more getting down on the floor to get to the lower cages. The 4 tier frame would be just about right with 3 tiers of cages.
I'm wondering about this too. I wonder if you start all your quails from eggs then mites are just not an issue? Also seems like no way to give them grit or oyster shells either unless you put it straight in their food tray.
Thank you for your review. I wanted to buy one for my quails but…. If it seems perfect for me…. I think that my adult quails need much more space, to run, to fly, to eat grass, to go into soil… so I will try to open them a door to a garden space. I don’t really know how for the moment. But still think about it.
I went ahead and bought the cages meant for chickens for my jumbo quail only because I felt bad for the jumbo quail and wanted them to have extra space in the cages. The only thing I didn't realize before buying it is that it doesn't have the egg rolling forward function for easy collection. I have to open the cage doors to collect the eggs. Oh well :)
Hi Terry, Thanks for the review. Did you try keeping jumbo quail in these modular cage? In a another review I heard the person saying the poop of jumbo quails doesn't pass through and gets stuck in birds feet. Is it?
I'm so glad I found your channel. I had watched your video on building your own, while it seemed simple enough, being able to move it to clean and what not made me a little nervous. I do have bad back so getting up and down is a challenge. I would like to to see the Maker perhaps make like a storage area or something. There by maybe reducing the cost for cages on the bottom that wouldn't be used, but having the main cages at a comfortable height ( Getting older too ) Would you Still try and cover the back wall like you did in your build?? To cut down on the manure ?? Or is the cage a lower enough height? Thanks again for the review and your channel
Thanks for the comment! Yes moving the homebuilt cage can be an issue, which is why I recently installed casters on all of my wood cages. The Hatching Time cage is easy to move and keep clean. The lowest layer does require some bending to access it. One person in the Facebook group mentioned building a lift unit out of wood with casters that the Hatching Time cage would sit on top of to raise the entire unit about 12" giving easier access to the lower cages. I did not cover the back of the Hatching Time cage and do not have any issues with manure.
I appreciate the review, but my question for you has about your experiance with your home built cages. I know that the raw, un coated metal can hold smells, have you noticed that? Or does there not seem to be an issue with that? My husband and I dream of having a homestead but currently we rent a house in town, our landlord has approved of quail pending a cage review which is why I found your channel in the first place and I have to say I do LOVE the information you share. Your a great resource and I appreciate you.
Thanks for the nice comment. I have not noticed any smell from either the metal, wood or plastic cages, although I am a stickler about keeping things clean. If I had to guess I'd say the wood frame cages have the most potential to retain smells. Hope this helps.
You can build the cage with preventing the poo on wood in mind. If you use wood at all, paint it with a high gloss paint or poly coating. And/Or, you can just use wire, no wood. And/Or you can use wire and wood, but design it so the wire doesn't allow the birds to poo on the wood. The big thing I have noticed with wood cage, is the tendency of the birds to huddle on or near it, because they seem to prefer the security the solid footing offers. So, keep that in mind, wood attracts them, if you use it around the booty height, keep them a few inches away from it with your wire wall design.
Terry, I've got the same set up with the three stack pen. Yesterday I noticed a hen dead and the back of her head peeled off, I also had four other hens in there including a roosters. I took the rooster out of the section with them hoping it would help. It did. But then this morning I went to feed and in another section a hen had the side of her neck split open. Have you ever had your quail turn cannibalism? If so would you have some advice to somehow stop this. Thanks. Seth
Yes, I have had this happen. It's usually a dominate hen or aggressive male that causes this. You need to figure out which of the birds is the aggressor and separate them from the group. Most of the time it is a genetic issue so I usually cull all aggressive birds as it can be passed on to the young. Also, I cut my ratios back to 1:3 for these smaller units and it has help tremendously. Hope this helps. Also, don't introduce new birds which may disturb the social structure of the group.
It's because the stock density is way to high. We see quail aggression more when we go over 1 quail per sqft. These pens are way to small. You can also have an aggressive bird that needs to be culled.
Great review Sir. Can you tell us about the differences in selling poultry meat and quail meat? License, taxes and such. I was reading something about this. Thank you for your appreciation of quail.
You need to check with your state authorities as far as selling and the licenses required. I'm sure you'll need permits and inspections to sell meat publicly.
I think the price is ok say for a 3 tier system.. You must consider the research, and development.. Especially if it lasts a long time.. Thanks for the video...
Nice Review! I like some of the features but it seems like it's very cramped. I don't think you could get 6 birds in each cage without them being on top of each other. 100 birds did they say? I don't think so.
Hmmm, I feel like it’s expensive for just Basically Plastic, also, they recommend basically crowding the Quail to death, lol. I have a Naturlistic wild Aviary for 25 quails, I give one Quail 1 square Foot per bird (that’s the Recommended for people who have more space)
@@irinab7524 I also have chickens as well. I feel like it is way too small. Would you live in plastic like that? If you were that animal and don’t feel you would enjoy it why give it to an animal? It is just too small for the amount of quails to be put in. For me personally, whatever is “recommended” for space per animal I at least Double it if not triple it if possible. We are supposed to give animals the best life we can. Is living in plastic and crowded a good life? Would you want to live in their? I hope you think not. ❤️💔
@@skiangel3962 we raise chicken and quails for food. I’m getting that you’re a vegan but most people eat meat from broilers - have you seen the space they live? These are very unhappy birds by your standard but they are not grown to be happy, they are supposed to became food
