THANK YOU SO MUCH TERRY. Over a year ago, we received the 4-tier and WISH we had gotten the 5-tier. My husband on day 1 cut out a square on the center walls to give them one large unit. They can move throughout the rectangular space (5 hens to 1 roo has worked great on each tier). The reason I did a search for hatching time today is to see if ANYONE has a good idea how to PREVENT THE POOP FROM FALLING DOWN INTO THE FOOD TRAY BELOW. You have given us a GREAT idea to go find the metal automotive drip pans. Bravo!!! Other than those 2 things, WE LOVE THIS SYSTEM and will order the 5th tier soon.
Oh, and for anyone else who goes with hatching time, be sure to order the flooring for the PARTRIDGE so the poop will fall through to the pan. I hope this helps someone and they don’t have to order all new flooring, later, like we had to do.
Good Video Terry... I did mine with 2 smaller openings, one in the front and one in the back. That left the middle to support the floor. I just did another layer with only 1 divider cut out and left 1 smaller cage for any time I need to separate any birds.
@@CoturnixCorner Just found a 3 tier set up, plus brooder and grow out cage on Craigslist. Can you clarify three things please. First....you commented above that "this" idea will be more beneficial to the birds. Which idea are you referring to? Cuttiing both middle dividers out, or leaving one smaller cage and two open? Second question: do you feel that the cage lost any necessary structure/ is it sagging? Lastly, does the poop move thru the cages with no issues, and if yes, is that on the normal sized birds or are you running a larger breed? Thanks for the detailed video review.
As I was building my cage I cut out the entire mesh from the inside side panels before I put it together. I haven't had an issue with weight as of yet.
Hi I just bought these cages for my baby quail, for when they reach adulthood. Anyways I was wondering if you could put a link to where I can find these exact drip pan so I don’t accidentally buy the wrong ones
I just got the single layer tier this week . That’s gonna help out a lot! How many jumbos after your modification compared to before? Thanks for your time and videos!
Just built the Four level unit! Love it! Now just waiting on my 100 Jumbo hatching eggs! Love your videos! Thanks for taking the time too share your knowledge! What brand of feed do you use? Is it medicated or not? Also, do you feed your birds grit? Thanks for your time! Chris Montague Ohio..
Thanks Chris, I'm sure you'll enjoy the cage system, it's been working well for me. The feed I use is Purina Gamebird Starter and their layer mix. I used to use Manna Pro but the prices are way to high for the higher protein feed. It's non medicated and I do not feed grit, it's not required if you're feeding crumbles. Good luck with your hatch!
I understand the benefit of waterer redundancy by removing the wall compartments in case one waterer clogs but is it better to keep the 3 roosters separated in 3 separate compartments? Or is their no benefit (less aggression) by separating the roosters? If it's beneficial to separate the roosters would adding an additional waterer in each compartment provide the best of both worlds?
@@CoturnixCorner Will do by cutting out openings between compartment separators so birds can mix, breed and share waterers. I can always reverse this for any reason by tying back up the dividers. My quail eggs are due in tomorrow, incubator is up and running and stable. I've got a 3 layer Comfortplast cage system arriving this week (2 layer breeder and 1 layer brooder). The folks at Hatching time upgraded my cages to slightly larger flooring grids (partridge size). They explained to me that although the quail cages are sufficiently sized for Coturnix quails, the breeder/egg roller floors are a little too tightly patterned for optimal poop pass through and recommended the slightly larger partridge floors. The upgrade cost was minimal. In the future they plan on offering this as a selectable, standard option.
Hi I am 13 and I have been looking for some quail for a while but there are none around. Do you feel any differentce with hatching eggs than getting chicks? I have a 10x4 cage for them I want them to be friendly. Thanks slot for your help your videos are so informational!! I want to start a RU-vid channel about my pigeons and my quail when I get some. Is there anything you suggest for me to get started? I feel like I will run out of ideas
I would start with eggs, that way you get to experience hatching out your own chicks. If you spend time with them and handle them occasionally they will get comfortable with you and even come to the door of the cage when you feed them. Once you get your birds you will have a lot of ideas for doing RU-vid videos, just share your experiences and what you've learned while taking care of your birds. Send me a link when you get the channel up and running! Thanks
The oil drip pans you described and generally available online and at local auto part stores are 36 X 25 X 3/4 Inch. Do you find 3/4" a bit too shallow. I will be getting my plastic cages in a week and like the idea about using a steel oil drip pan which is deeper (25" vs 20") than the plastic one supplied to keep the poop out of the feeder. I will use the supplied plastic one as the temporary one while cleaning the metal drip pan. My experience as a mechanic is that these pans are rather flimsy. Do you find them rigid enough when they get loaded up?
Does the modification change the amount of males and females you’d put in the cage… if I remember correctly it was recommended 1 male to 4 females in each section? Next question how many jumbo quail do you recommend in the modified cages that are now one cage… Interested in hearing your response… I personally did feel that the space was small for quality of life… Please let me know your thoughts
Thank you for providing such a helpful discussion/analysis for new comers like me. I've got my incubator and cages and eggs are on their way to me! I'm a little confused about jumbo coturnix capacity. Is 3 birds/sf too many birds (inhumane and leads to aggression/picking/injury?). The cages are are 18" x 36" = 4.5sf. For jumbos raised for meat/eggs/breeding does that translate to 4.5sf x 3birds/sf = 13-14 birds (10-11 hens plus 3 roosters)? That's more than what you stated. I've read several others recommending as many as 3.5 birds/sf which brings you up 15 birds (12 hens plus 3 roosters).
Decente product … but if you have to move it around make sure you get couple dozens of zip ties … Easy to clean…. But boy this thing is frágil. (Make sure you zip tie the thing real good )
I imagine you could use a smaller pan that will fit through the door opening. I usually offer dust baths about every two or three weeks just to keep the birds busy especially if there is a little fighting going on. But, no it's not necessary.
Have you yourself, or has anybody shared a hack to make a dust/sand bath that would hang on the outside, over the door, so I can put it on once a week, and not worry about space inside / fitting through the doorway? I have seen several, but none made for Hatching Time. Trying to make one, but thought maybe not 'reinvent the wheel....' @@CoturnixCorner
Does this affect how many males you can now have in that section? Previously I was going to have one make per apartment but If I do this, will one male be enough for 12 females?
@@webbkeller5109 I was more worried that having more than one male per space might initiate fighting or less than 1 to 4 ratio for group of 12 females would result in many unfertilized eggs.
great video buuut i would never buy the Comfortplast cages they cost a fortune .its just stupid what they cost .ive made 21 quail cages that have lasted me for 9 years at a quarter of the cost
People need to be aware that they need to line up those arrows just right or the whole thing will be ruined! Know what you are doing before you begin or you will waste hundreds of dollars 💸 !
