Information:
Are you interested in increasing the value of your comic collection? As comics age, they often accrue dirt and grime, which negatively impact the “grade” or condition of the comic and ultimately the value. Comic book “dry” cleaning is a process for removing dirt or stains from the covers of comics without the use of chemicals. By learning and applying the process of cleaning, you can remove many of these blemishes, significantly improving the look of the comic. Cleaning is often combined with comic book pressing, the process of applying heat and pressure to remove bends, mitigate creases, and lighten spine ticks. There are a tremendous amount of resources online for learning how to clean and press comics; however, it can be difficult and costly to piece together all the supplies you need just to test out the process. No worries! I have saved you the trouble and assembled a Comic Book Cleaning Starter Kit that includes all you will need to start cleaning. These supplies are detailed in the technical manual Comic Book CPR: How to Clean and Press Comic Books, which is an excellent resource for learning the skills needed to start cleaning and pressing comics! Don’t delay! In addition to increasing the value of your books, comic book cleaning is a fun, relaxing, and rewarding process.

Awesome video! Love the time lapse. Could you post another video, but slow it down a notch? It is relaxing watching someone else dry clean their comics!

Why do you insert a 3rd Sheet in-between your Magazine Backing Boards when prepping the Staple's pre-press ?

Great catch and great question. There are some books (e.g., ASM 361 and Venom 9) where the staples protrude pretty significantly. If you only used a single magazine backer board butted up to the staples, then when you pressed it, there would be staple indentations on the front and back cover. There are two ways to address this depending on the thickness of the book and stack. For ASM 361, I use 65 lbs card stock to "sandwich" the staples, then a single magazine backer board in between. The backer board should touch the tops of the staples while the card stock will be on either side protecting the covers. For books like Venom 9 with GIANT staples, I use two magazine backer boards to sandwich the staples. Hope this helps! In the future, I will make a video of this.

Thank you so much ! I've been using magazine backing boards and not even considering the 65 lb card stock. One more question if you don't mind. Since modern books don't need as much humidity. Do you think it's even necessary to put a modern in a humidity chamber if it's just a quick press ? Thanks again. I'm trying hard to learn as much as possible. I love that your humidity chamber is only two to four minutes instead of 2 hours like others. Anything that can expedite the process is pure gold. Thank you so much for all.you do.

@@matty_k420 99% of the time I do not use humidity with glossy moderns (i.e., all of the books currently being release). In my dry mount press with steel plates, I heat up to the correct temperature (145), put the book in, turn off the press, and leave for 4 hours. That's it! Unless the books have dents/divots or other issues, then that is usually all you need. It's a little different for T-shirt presses, but all that is covered in the KaptainMyke online guide. Older moderns like ASM 300 always get humidity and a longer press cycle.

How do you get your camera view like that

I use a tripod with an iPhone mount that I lean over the work area. The video will record upside down and then you just have to flip it :). Thanks for watching!
