Back in the 1970's reading Conan the Barbarian by Marvel got me through one rejecting girlfriend after another. And now all of these gals are fat and flabby (I done seen 'em) and I still have my Conan magazines.
The Savage Sword of Conan was the truth back in the day. Me and my homie used to collect Savage Sword in Jr high. Fun fact, issue 2 was actually printed in color. It was the only one and I still have it. Marvel used one of Howard's pirate stories and switched the protagonist from Howard's pirate hero Black Vulmea to Conan.
Fun video. Many of the John Buscema Conan issues featured covers by Gil Kane who was a very prolific cover artist for Marvel in the '70s. I'm a big fan of Conan and the other REH characters. Marvel did a fantastic Kull series in the '70s as well, featuring art by John Severin on the early issues and some great Ploog work on some of the later ones. I have owned most of the Marvel Conan issues since the '80s/'90s and recently I buckled down and completed the run of 275 issues including all of the annuals and Giant-Size issues. I'm also a big monster magazine fan and have most of the run of Savage Sword (235 issues) including the first 50 or so which are by far the best, though all of them are good. Thanks for the video.
You guys did a great job on this video. Takes us back to the 70s and all the great Conan books of those days. My collection is mostly the early run but now getting the later issues will be a priority. Thanks Guys!
Well I sure as hell don't have 600 Conan's in my collection, but I do have 2 of the Conan Treasury Editions. So I'll consider myself lucky. We showed them off again in our Marvel Treasury Edition episode.
Wow, I didn't know you covered comics back in the day -- what a great surprise! Check out Conan the Barbarian #75, probably the classic issue with John Buscema. Also, Savage Sword #20, 26 and 27 -- really great stuff!
I was really into The Savage Sword of Conan back in the '80's. I was in the army and stationed in Germany, and me and a buddy used to really look forward to the new issue showing up at the PX. They were all in black and white but a ton of fun to read. I think I even have some of those old issues laying around somewhere.
The reason BWS' early Conan work resembles Kirby is because that was the directive. Like all industries, when a formula works, the company heads or head, usually make everyone fall in line, until you're established. Steranko was made to do the same.
Yep, same for John Romita Sr. Look at his early Kirby clone work on Avengers 23 and Cap 114 compared to his later work, for example Ms Marvel 1 or ASM annual 21
Very good video. I love those old Treasuries and the Savage Sword magazines! I'm torn between keeping my copies in good shape and re-reading them. I don't plan on selling them, so I guess I have to read them!
If I were you, I'd hang onto them. You can still read them & enjoy them all over again. Just be careful with them. Give them the white glove treatment & you should be fine. Best regards from Wild Bill👍

Great video! Love all of Howard's works, especially Conan and Solomon Kane. You've got a new subscriber! Do either of you go to HeroesCon? I feel like I've seen you there before but I could just be misremembering.

You can no longer judge a comic by its cover. Publishers caught on and now engage in nothing but bait and switch, getting too artists to do awesome covers and rarely is the inside art as good as the cover.
