This was an extremely well done, informative video covering REH's works as presented in the various comics over the years. Really helped me see where to go and what to do to continue collecting all this great stuff from both Marvel and Dark Horse. Thanks for putting all this together in such a comprehensive, yet accessible manner! :)
SSOC was the BEST comic ever created. Dark Horse's version benefits from slick paper, computer coloring, and art created in today's climate when the Internet provides all the image reference and swipe material one could ever ask for (and I speak as a professional artist who has lived long enough to know the difference). SSOC was printed on cheap paper in b&w and was drawn and inked completely out of the artists' imagination and raw talent with covers painted in oil, with no digital tools to allow editing and endless tweaking. The team of Buscema and Alcala created the most beautiful b&w comics ever.
Thanks for the Dark Horse Conan run explanation. Now please teach us how to keep score at Bowling, and about the Blue Lines in Hockey. And straighten out the continuity at DC Comics! EEE HEE HEE!!!
Really glad to see you back "on the air" regarding collected editions of our favorite comics! I just got the Marvel Conan Omni in the mail today. I had already collected many of the paperback editions from DH back when they were starting to put out the Chronicles of Conan re-colored trades and the Savage Sword of Conan B&W collections. However, I only collected the Roy Thomas written stories as I always thought he gave the most attention to staying to the original character that REH created. That would be Vol's 1-14 and 31-34 of COC and Vol's 1-5 and 19-22 of SSOC. I'll probably still pickup the Conan The Barbarian Omni's as they come out even tho I have the DH trades (will be doing some color comparisons on those early issues to see if they were really that bad) but not sure how many SSOC Omni's I'll pickup past the first one. Best story arcs for me during the Thomas/Buscema years were all the issues containing Belit, Queen of the Black Coast through issue #100.
Dedicated Conan fan! I had collected a few of the trades here and there, but eventually I just decided to wait until hardcovers came out. Glad I did, even if the Savage Sword content is basically the same I'm in it for the new colors on the main series!
Hello Will. It's so good to have you back!!!! Please keep doing videos like this one. I like your channel because a) it's not just about hauls 2) you are interested in a variety of different comics/ movies / bandes dessinées and are obviously more open minded that the average comic reader on youtube and 3 ) because you are critical and don't find everything you read interesting, your opinion is more valuable to me even if i disagree with your preferences most of the time. Since you asked about suggestions, i would like more videos shows with MJ if possible. He is very interesting to listen to and would like to see him more often on your show.
Hi Will, Thanks you for the great video. I agree with all your comments. The Collosal Conan and Conan the Cimmerian is available in 20 Hardcovers as well. But those are also not easily available. Happy reading.
fantastic i am collecting conan right now love your posts this one in particular is so informative you have laid out a clear path for me to follow many thanks.
I have the complete run of Conan at Dark Horse and really looking forward to the return to Marvel. Just got the first Marvel omnibus today and can’t wait to collect every thing in the coming years 😊 Great video and keep up the great work 👍
Same, I was never into the usual superhero tripe myself. If you like Heavy Metal, then consider checking out Epic Illustrated and Eclipse magazines. They're awesome reads in their own right.
A couple of thins, firts and the most important: Glad to have you back, really surprise to saw comic content from you again, also nice video, really like to hear facts and all that. Glad i didn't unsuscribe.
how was fred van lente's run? the dark horse omnis look a bit smaller than epics. dude you are a conan expert you got a sub. i realy want to read the 70s black and white run so i might get that omni. i'll probably grab some epics cary nord is terrific. what do you know about kull and his comics? i want to see the mike ploog kull run. is anyone publishing kull now? tia
This video was right up my alley. I specialized in collecting all the original stuff containing Conan, including the Savage Tales issues containing him. I also branched off a little and got most of the Marvel Red Sonja stuff. There is also Conan Saga which reprints the original Conan The Barbarian comic in magazine size black & white. Anyway thanks for the info. I didn't realize Conan was still popular.
Welcome back! Always enjoy your vids. As a fellow fan of all visual storytelling, I think Nerdventures is a more apt channel name for someone with many nerdy passions exploring a variety of mediums/content (not just film exclusively). See you in the next one!
You didn’t even mention the Dark Horse Conan Hardcover series 0-20 I’ve been collecting them from day one beautifully collected HCs at least deserve a shoutout
Awesome video, new to the channel but certainly staying. Just wondering though: have you thought about adding in some images or graphics to your videos? Your thoughts are really well structured and I feel like adding some visual flare would really kick them up a notch Hope to see more stuff from you
I would like to do that but I'm not entirely certain what I want it to be. I don't make scripts for these so they tend to be just off the dome and I'm not sure if it would be interesting to just have pictures of the things I'm talking about going the whole time? I think what I really need to do is start making scripts and then shooting B roll and such to make better content, but I don't have much experience with editing something like that together so I haven't given it much of a go...
I used to read Conan when I was younger, 1991-92, dont remember. Here in Mexico they printed conan but it was in a smaller format. I would like to get these new hard cover collection from marvel with those conan stories. thanx so much for this info.
If you can score them for cheap, it's a good option! The paper stock is kinda the older school "toothy" paper and since there's no color for DH to ruin it looks pretty good. There were some volumes becoming expensive in recent months but I'd be curious to see I'd they drop in price on the used market after the Omni start coming out.
@@SequentialsDeluxe Avoiding bad recoloring was my thought process exactly. After I'm done making my way through the newly released Marvel omni vol. 1 I'll see if I'm interested enough to start on that collection as well. Thanks for all the info, and keep up the good work 👍
Didn't need the DH Colossals. The 7 DH softcover omnibuses are just fine for me. I did want that Colossal King Conan though. Hoping Marvel reprints it.
Currently reading through those Darkhorse Omnis. Thoma Giorello's art is awesome! It saddened me greatly when other artists replaced him... I'd love to pick up some of the Savage Sword material. I've heard (and seen) nothing but good things....But the price is a bit of a stumbling block.
Thanks for summing it up. I really do hope Marvel sees the demand for the big omnibi cause the price of Colossal Coana the Cimmerian are already $150 plus
I have the first two volumes of the Conan Dark Horse (Busiek). I'm thinking of purchasing the rest but it looks like vol.3 is already getting rare. I am most interested in the Savage Sword of Conan magazine omni. How many volumes would this be?
Hey. I have a quick Conan question: At my local bookstore there is an edition of Colossal Conan for $300 CDN (open copy, good condition) . I have been thinking about purchasing it for awhile, especially considering won't be printed ever again (with the Marvel acquisition). I also noticed open copies on eBay this week selling for over $500. I'm wondering if anyone could provide any insight on the future "collectability" of this giant volume, whether this is a good deal, if the recent ebay prices are inflated etc.
It's highly unlikely it will get a reprint since Dark Horse doesn't own the rights and Marvel doesn't print books in that size. I can't guarantee it, but I think it will be 300+ dollars permanently
I think the writing is just different, more short stories so that depends if you like that. The art is definitely more mature since it was published as a magazine it could get away with boobies and blood and all that good stuff
So far Marvel has only announced softcover for the Dark Horse content. But I think they will do a Conan original years epic collection eventually after some Omni
@@elliottjames671 I don't think any of them have Frazetta art in them since he mostly did just paintings and not sequential art. Savage Sword of Conan omnibus does have some similar art in the covers which are nice, painted fantasy covers. That might be your best bet!
