Thats the idea. He was born and raised in privilege, and riches and grew tired of it so slumming in the poor man's life was an exciting experience from him. It was different from his lifestyle and therefore he could feel like he was doing for himself.

Eddie's smile is funny. The funniest smile to me was when that dude from Zamunda took a picture with Akeem at the basketball game. That dude had a big ass smile on his face. Lol.
Really man i remember watching this when i was like 6 in 92 and seeing the credits at the end where they show the characters and it kept saying Eddie Murphy and a few Arsenio's i was like wtf? I had no idea how that worked but when i found out a few years later it made me love Eddie even more..he was a pioneer of doing multiple roles..him and Arsenio
My god why is this movie so perfect. Something about eddie tapping aresenio shoulder when mentioning that they are african students just kill me. That smile 😃

Something about when the cab driver asks "Is this shitty enough for you?" and Akeem says "Yes, it's perfect" then gets out of the cab, looks around in total wonder at the starkly contrasting scene in front of him compared with what he has only known his entire life up until that point, then when a resident throws garbage on the street and Akeem says "Fascinating. Semi, look at this. America is great indeed. Imagine a country so free one can throw glass on the street" makes me cry.

This was a fun movie and enjoyable, no politics, just plain funny entertainment. Wish more movies like this were produced. 1980s. America was free back then.

The reason why I love this movie so much. I live on the west coast, we traveled to Cali to visit relatives. Crackheads or whoever stole our luggage and all that while we were checking into the hotel.

I like to think Akeem is the reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Who also happened to be born a wealthy and sheltered prince who was provided every luxury in life, who was kind and generous and choose to rid himself of his worldly possessions to live humbly and achieve enlightenment.
