My first project of 2024 is complete and its one that I've wanted to do for a long time as its a scene from my favourite WW2 movie 'The Longest Day' depicting Commander Colin Maud who was a Beachmaster on D-Day,
The movie has a few inaccuracies in that the scene is set on Sword Beach but Commander Maud was actually the Beachmaster on Juno Beach. He was also given the temporary rank of Captain for the D-Day landings, hence his shoulder boards are not those of a Commander. Maud's real dog 'Winston' was a German Shepard and not a Bulldog, I've read that the directors changed the dog as there is a German Shepard in a another scene and they didn't want two dogs the same to confuse the viewer. Maud was also a technical advisor for the movie and the shillelagh wielded by actor Kenneth More in the movie is actually Mauds own.
Anyway, some of you have noticed that the Universal Carrier has been sat on my shelves for a few years and here it is finally used in a diorama 👍

Kits used:
1/35 Universal Carrier - Tamiya
Figures used:
1/35 Commander Colin Maud and Winston by Scale Model Accessories (this kit is discontinued but I was lucky enough to pick one up on Ebay a few years ago)
Other figures are a mish mash of Tamiya, Bronco, Gecko and Dragon figures with some having resin heads and re-posed limbs
Cricut Digital Cutting Machine - the machine featured is the Cricut Joy but please note that it has been modified to cut Tamiya Masking Sheets. Out of the box this machine will cut right through the masking sheet and requires a small tweak to the cutting blade mounting.
3D printer - Anycubic Mono X
XPS Foam - • Where do I buy the bla...
Paints used:
AK 3rd Gen Paint Sets - sets include shadow and highlight colours for mixing intermediate shades
Vallejo Model Color and Tamiya Acrylic Paints
Wet Palette from Hobbyzone - hobbyzone.pl/
Airbrush - Iwata Eclipse HP-CS
Brushes - Size 1 & 0 from Rosemary & Co, dry brush from Artis Opus
Please note that the cameras and processing software may not accurately reproduce the colours of paints used

The longest day is one of my favourite movies since I was a kid, and your diorama is very close to the movie layout itself. From a modeling point of view I like very much the result. Particularly I find very hard to get a realistic sand beach result and yours is quite good.

That came out really cool! The multiple variations in the beach painting didn’t make sense until the reveal at the end and the shading and colors pop out.

What a fantastic result!!! 👏👏👏👏Such a character in the film. And very apt as it is the 80 anniversary of D-Day this year. Well done again and thanks so much for showing us the process this diorama went through and sharing it with us.👍👍😉

Accurate to the film, but Maud's actually dog was a German Shepherd. They changed it in the film because the Normandy commander had a Shepherd and they didn't want him to have the same dog, so they switched it to a proper British Bulldog.

Thanks and kudos to your Uncle for being one of the many (few) who were there.....Maud was Beachmaster on Juno Beach where Canadian troops landed......I would guess your Uncle landed on Sword Beach with the British.........my Grandfather drove an Army Fire Tender and landed on D-Day + 6 so missed him completely, lol
@pjb5757
@pjb5757 4 месяца назад
@@CWModelling I remember my great uncle telling me about the Canadians, so I think he must have been near them. He also had great admiration of the German pilots because the ones he saw never shot at the ambulances. He told me they used to keep the ambulances and lorrys separate at first but they switched to having them mixed together because they thought it would be safer for the lorrys. My uncle was a great man, he didn't want to fight so he became a medic and that role meant he spent a lot of his time near the front line. He was also part of operation Market Garden.

Thank you again for this video! I just received my circuit joy and will try it in a few days :) Bought a set of cutting mats with it. and have a lot of good old tamiya tape. What tape did you use? its a lot bigger which might be handy if I have bigger models Grüße :)
@CWModelling
@CWModelling Месяц назад
Cool, I hope it works for you.......the sheets of tape I have are from Tamiya and are A5 size roughly.......As I mention in the video description, the Cricut won't cut the tape straight out the box as it will cut right through it and the backing sheet, so you have to insert washers made from paper under the cutting needle holder to lift the blade high enough to stop it cutting right through the backing sheet and only cut the tape......Mine took 2 paper washers......there are videos on the web that show you what to do......also in the cutting materials library you have to create a custom material and give it the lightest pressure setting.....As I said hopefully it works for you too 👍
@seegurke93
@seegurke93 Месяц назад
@@CWModelling is the sheet Tamiya 87129? Ok I will have to remember this. Sadly my Circut joy did not connect to my laptop. When I wanted to connect it, the laptop said that I should check the PIN but the window did not open to insert the Pin (Which I found out after a lot of research is 0000 and many people had to inser the pin). So I just packed it back in the box and will return it for a new one. (I bought it new but the contents were clearly used before.... Amazon at its best..) Maybe with the next it will work or I have to look for alternatives like using it with my ipad or so.
