Dave you're the man you always calmly explain my frustration with camera manufacturers and their accessories. I just bought a GH4 and I'm looking into a focal reducer to canon glass and the search has been infuriating to say the least. This is only vaguely related to this video but you've been helpful all along the way.

The shot with the basketball court with the big door to the left looked really bad. I really don't want buy a Sony A7S and use a adapter with Canon lenses. Dave please test the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount adapter the one that is made by Sony I heard there is not lens flare.

I had the Fotodiox, Nikon to Sony E model. I had both light leaks and reflections (same as shown by Dave here). The light leaks are easy to test: 1) turn the camera on, don't remove the lens cup. 2) set the camera to manual, slower the shutter speed to a few seconds (to increase light sensitivity). 3) take a small flash light and point it at the adapter. move the light around the adapter and pay attention to the camera screen, you will see the light leaks hitting the sensor, in real time. I tried painting the inside of the adapter with Krylon super matter, I also surrounded the aperture ring on the adapter with black tape. It made a bit of difference, but never got rid of the issues. I got fed up and ordered a very expensive Novoflex adapter. I should receive it today.

I think one of the main take aways regarding most if not all adaptors currently is that you will most likely have to manual focus and don't expect them to be stellar for any action type photo/video situatuions.

You do not have to use glue to flock your adapter. I successfully flocked my commlite by using matte black tape. It's like gaff tape. Just cut little trapezoids to fit the shape of the inside walls. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QE5KJG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Just want to comment that I used some flat black paint on the inside of my commlite adapter. It doesn't completely resolve the reflection issue but certainly makes it better. The paint I used was the flat Black Touch-Up Pen from Birchwood Casey. It smell a bit funny when it first goes on but the smell goes away after a day or 2.

I have the commlite, I decided on it through your reviews. I use MF mostly but there are times when it's way to bright to see the screen so I switched to AF. The commlite missed the mark on most occasions. Luckily I found this out in testing and not on a job. Still though, I get to use fast(ish) zoom lenses and the price is great so all in all I am happy with it.

Great video Dave! The lens situation is why I just can't seem to buy into the whole Sony thing. I just bought a D750 to try out for a while. As far as stills it's phenomenal with my old Nikon glass, of course. Next up is to see if the video quality can hang at all with my GH4 to give me the full frame aesthetic...

Is it just a reflection problem or light leak also? will spraying matt black paint inside the adapter help with the reflection, 5$ for paint mean you still save 295$ over the Metabones if it work :)

Are you actually using a lens hood when running these test?
@BampFilm
@BampFilm 8 лет назад
Dave no disrespect but your flare tests are with two different lenses, are at various exposures and you have a light pointed at the camera? Where's the matte box? Where's the top flag? The pool shot was something you couldn't fully avoid though a matte box with internal "eye brows" or the "matte" for the chosen focal length would help a great deal, I know that's not practical for how you shoot but then that's why you have flare, you'd never setup a interview with a light directed at the camera if you didn't want flare, that's the only reason a soft source such as the LED is "directional" (because you directed it) it's not a fresnel or ellipsoidal spot it's a light panel? Any idea about back focus with these adopters? You find the infinity focus is off with one compared to the other? Also, was the audio recorded on the a7s with the xlr adapter? Reason I ask is because you have channel bleed, I can hear a faint after echo of you in the left channel (was using headphones)

Question, though its rare, I've seen one guy post all over commlite reviews (has to be the same guy cause its always the same description and camera body) that it fried his lens chip. Can anyone testify their experience with commlite service in reaction to problems? Also, a guy did a video showing that his sigma lens broke after using the metabones IV. And metabones only reimbursed him for the adapter which I would find appalling and outrageous if their product did that to my gear. I'd be demanding pay for paying for a premium "quality built adapter." Now if there was a reason why metabones did this (for example: more to the story) I would understand. Is there anyone who has suggestions, other than using native lense (Which I don't want to do)? I would buy the commlite, but though people rave about commilte adapters, the company is china based (I believe) and has no facebook account. I can't buy an adapter if the company can't reimburse me for the rare, but plausible event, that their product ruins my equipment.

It's funny Dave but I haven't noticed any reflections with my Metabones Mark IV. They did have another coating from Mark iii to Mark iv. Are you using the latest Smart Adaptor Mark iv or are you using the previous one Mark iii?

Yes I used the latest one. Of all the adapters the meta bones was the best but it would still get some reflections.

I have the commlite adapter for my a6000 and it works pretty well overall but it doesn't work with my Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. When I turn the camera on with this lens installed, the camera freezes a bit and then basically reverts to a dumb adapter providing no AF or power for OS.

Hi, Dave I am currectly using the Commlite mounted the EF 50mm 1.2 to A7s, everytime I press the video recording buttom, the aperture will automatically turn wide open, even I was in F16, then I have to turn it back to F1.2 then it start function again. I have two Commlite adapter and both are the same when mounted on EF lens, have you experience such problem? and any solution of it?? thanks

Those don't have any magnification reducing glasses ?! so they are just adapters with no lenses to reduce the crop factor on they sensors..... then i really don't see how any adapter will be better than the other !! other than how it might feel when you mount it and so on and so forth .....

Shaun Hilton Which A7 do you have? I have that lens on an A7r and the focus was very fast and it doesn't even have the better phase detect focusing of the other A7 models. There are many focus settings in the menu you may want to check. Of course it also depends on what you're shooting.
@maggyfish
@maggyfish 9 лет назад
Thanks for your reply I've got a7.... Shooting my daughter who was sat quite still over small dining table out for a meal single point focus medium size focus point.. Found I had to focus on her shoulder wouldn't lock on her face was at 1.8 so her eyes and face was a little out of focus I've also found if I up the fstop it struggles even more
@mavfan1
@mavfan1 9 лет назад
Shaun Hilton sounds like you might just have a bad copy of the lens or camera. You say you just purchased them so I'd go back to the dealer and/or Sony and have them checked. If anything focusing should be easier the higher the f stop. In the meantime you should try manual focus. It's really easy with focus peaking and magnification.
@mavfan1
@mavfan1 9 лет назад
Shaun Hilton I was just thinking that if you bought the camera used, or even if not you might want to do a settings reset on it. It might be that the prior owner changed a setting that's messing you up or maybe you pressed something by mistake. The settings reset is on the menu on pg 6 of the toolbox.

Why do you need adaptor for Canon lenses ? And not using the fast autofocus on your Sony camera with Sony lenses? And why do you need Sony camera ? Use Canon SL1 if you wont small and light camera. You think can make better photos with Sony ? I don't think so. Even if you got little more sharpness with the Sony camera it is not noticeable for the human eye. And you are loosing all the specific nice looking color coming from the Canon cameras :) Or you may like the fast shooting speed ? What about the buffer for JPEG ? Canon SL1 can do that for unlimited :) You like RAW may be ? You never will say the deference between photos coming from RAW and the one coming from JPEG and than working little bit with some Adobe Photo shop above this photo. And I will make a video with the prof of that. And will stop the euphoria using RAW photos and waste the people money every year for a new cameras and terrible adapters. And hey with the adapters the autofocus will be terrible slow on any camera i guarantee you. Good Luck :)
