This song is a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both amazing R&B singers who had recently passed away when this song was released. It's just an amazing song that always makes me tear up a bit.

This song made me cry like a baby,, because I loved these singers and miss their beautiful voices.

When you grew up listening to The Commodores, KC and the Sunshine Band, Tina Turner, etc., you get used to the costumes and dance moves. Don't let it turn you off the music. There is so much great music out there to explore.

There is so much history in this song. The “ night shift” was when black artist were “ allowed” to use the studio. After the white artist were gone, and the cleaning folks came in.

This makes me and my arthritic knees want to get up and dance. Their sound is both soothing and uplifting! I haven't heard this in about 35 years. Takes me back!

Love the Commodores! I'm from the suburbs of Detroit, I'm 76 years old, and grew up with this music. Got to see many of the greats in person! Smokey Robinson is my all time favorite though.

OMG the Commodores. I haven't thought of them in years. They were a band that everybody disco danced to back in the 70's and 80's. I sure did. Such a weird time. Zeppelin and the Stones vs Commodores and Donna Summer. Hard to comprehend they existed at the same time. I listen to classic rock stations now and I never hear the disco music played on them. Most were pretty cheesy songs. For the most part I don't talk about the discos I frequented without being slightly embarrassed to admit it. But damn they were fun in their day. Commodores Brick House!!!!!

You're right, you should make fewer judgments on style and more emphasis on one of the best groups in history. These guys are total talent. No auto tune or any other enhancements.

The Commodores were at their peak about the same time as Earth, Wind & Fire. Some overlap with Kool and the Gang

This song was released eight years prior to The Lion King. Great song and performance. These type songs are loved by most people. The rhythm, singers, and lyrics fit so smoothly, almost a cool swagger. And the tributes to our lost musicians is perfect.

Me and three others worked the Nightshift while in the USAF and we played this song almost every night.

Fun Fact: The drummer on this use to play with Frank Zappa, and is now one of the most hired and respected drummers in the world. You got it - Vinnie Colaiuta.

I remember cruising at night to this song. Great memories!

Though some might've thought the syncronized dancing was a little corny, they knew what they were doing because it was a homage to the doo wop and rhythm blues eras performers who used to do those dances in the past. The Commodores were one of the bands that kept that tradition alive. Kind of a nice touch when you think about it from that context.

one other tribute in the song, there was a radio stattion back in the day in new york, ( also appearing in the movie -the warriors) , with the late night DJ calling her show the night shift, and the line , a direct quote of hers which played prominence on her show for late night listeners "you found another home here on the night shift"

I remember when this came out..I use to work primarily the nightshift, and when it came on the radio, we would sing it.

I was born in 1970. This was early MTV days, although I never remember the video. But the song itself was a huge hit. Everyone liked this song, no matter your background. Lionel Richie was in the Commodores. The video is very corny. But most videos were at the time. We’ve come a long way. It would be better just to show them performing it live. This song was played at every school dance for probably 5 years or so. Good one

The music of the Commodores is definitely a rabbit hole you should go down. Lionel Richie was their lead singer during their heyday. Songs like Sail On, Easy, Three Times A Lady, Oh No, and Lady are definite soulful vibes. Then check out Too Hot to Trot and Brickhouse to get your funk on. Definitely reaction worthy.

And i chased that dragon for a minute, til i found basslines w on sly stone tracks. To me, this was as magical as, like, the ojays' stairway, or the highwayman. Yeah, this was post-Lionel Ritchie era Commodores. Lionel had left and hit it HUGE in his solo career. As others have said, it's a tribute to Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye. This song was all over R&B and pop radio in the 80's. Surprised you hadn't heard it, but it's a classic. And yeah, the video was distracting from an otherwise stellar tune. LOL
