Our most viewed video 5 Bearded Dragon Care Mistakes have over 2 million views. So we decided to give it a little update, with some new information.
When it comes to the proper care and maintenance of the bearded dragon, opinions vary greatly-especially regarding whether or not you can use sand, or feed dragons insects such as meal worms. However, in the three decades that we have been keeping and breeding these personable dragons, we have learned much and we'd like to share with you what has worked for us time and time again. After we have seen and heard many horror stories about pet stores and the improper reptile husbandry we decided to address these issues in this video. We know there will be those that disagree with us about some of these controversial things, but we will put our husbandry and the health of the dragons that we produce up against any in the country.
Find us on Instagram and Facebook, @ Cold Blood Creations!

The most important piece of your reptiles habitat.
The health and well being of your pet depends on having the right environment. Don't trust it to cheap gauges that come in pet store "kits". We have 3 of those side by side and they NEVER give the same readings. We have used the V.E. brand thermostats for years without problems, and how been found accurate when tested.
Most feeding and other health problems can be avoided when the environmental needs are met.
This is how we take the guess work out of our dragons environment:

In a world where every Facebook group moderator is an armchair herpetologist that knows everything, it is nice to hear a professional breeder confess that they are always learning and correcting the way that they care for their animals. Thank you.

None of us know it all. I learned many years ago that some things I was certain about, I was also wrong about. So, rather than being blissfully ignorant, while blindly arrogant, we prefer to test things, examine them, and see if we can improve. That said, if a person is not willing to think that they could be wrong, you can never convince them even with facts. Someone convinced against their will will remain with the same opinion still. Thank you for all of the great info! My daughter impulse bought a bearded dragon from a big box pet store and was completely unprepared to care for him. Thanks to experienced breeders like you I have learned SO MUCH. Our boy now has a proper sized tank, appropriate lighting, and correct diet. He is happy and healthy and I am absolutely in love with the little stinker.

I rescued a one year old beardie that was way under weight that had been living in a tank full of its own feces🤮😓 I had snakes years ago but never a bearded dragon. I immediately started searching for information and your channel had been the best source for me. I followed all your instructions and my baby is so happy and healthy and growing, I thank you sir for your honest expertise.

So, I have found something as far as greens for the older ones. I live in middle Tennessee and the ONLY place I can find them is (of all places) at a Walmart Market, it is in the the produce section and it is in a bag and called Southern Greens. It has the big ones that the dragons can eat (compliments to you guys) and let me tell y'all, our dragons LOVE them. Yes, Cold-blooded creations, the Moore family now has 2. Thank you so much from all of us for all of your help. Ms. Sheeva (our first) is doing SUPER well!! She is 4 yrs old now and our baby boy (Draco) is almost 3. Thank you all so much!!

@lindisfarnedruidakaganjawa5081
Another humbly informative and honest presentation folks, well done. :) Oh and old school is the only school. Observation, deduction, conclusion, action. P.S On this humidity thing, again based on my years spent in the bush with these critters around, basically their range extends into the wet Sclerophyl forest up to the point where you begin to see Staghorns and Elk Horn Ferns growing close to the ground from there it is wet enough in the forest to sustain The Water Dragons. Now i have no clue about what the actual humidity of these zones is but as a rule if you see Blade grass growing around and the range of eucalypts is from Forest Redgum, Spotted Gums, through the Tallows, and Black Butts, to the full dry country Iron Barks, and Stringy Barks, then you can expect to see bearded dragons out and about on the warmer to hotter days. In effect what i am getting at is that other than full wet forest you can expect to see them right down to the coast even in the Melaluca forests, when they are dry. ( Melalucas generally like to be flooded at least once or twice a year and only ever grow where they can get their feeder roots into the ground or tidal water. ) At the risk of being the new pariah of reptile keeping i would offer that provided ample heating drying opportunities particularly Sunlight would off set / mitigate humidity issues, Which i guess reinforces what you have already said. I'm merely providing actual observations of these guys in the wild. A second suggestion you might like to have a lash at is, if you know of any nursery in your area that stocks Syzygium ( Australian Lily Pilly's and i hope i spelt the latin right ) Grow these trees they do get big but can be trimmed into hedges. after about three years these trees will begin to bear fruit, This fruit is packed with Vit. C and is eaten here by the bugs the lizards eat. Hence Nature gut loads the prey animals old school style. These trees should grow in a lot of the warmer states of USA basically it can get to zero but only for a few nights or a week at best frost on ground occasionally should be OK but snow and real winter will kill them anywhere semi tropical-Tropical with a good water supply, reasonable depth ( 1m ) of alluvial soil / sandy and they will jump. Also fruit is edible for us and was a major source of seasonal food for the Mob before white fellas got here. Hope the observations about where you see them here where they run wild was helpful. Yes they do do better in the arid zone but you'll see them right down to where the scrub and forest begins to transition into more of a rain forest. Stay safe, Bless :)

I love your channel and the way you are so informative and humble as well! I have been wanting to get a beardie for a while and I am slowly building its enclosure(the start up is quite expensive!). I also want to know as much as possible before getting it from a breader. I adopted a 10 year old corn snake from a friend 18 months ago and he unfortunately grew cancerous tumors so I had to have him euthanized last week....I'm really sad but I'm putting my attention into setting up an upgraded snake enclosure and a beautiful and complete beardie enclosure. I live in Quebec city, Canada, so no natural sun for at least 8 months(unless it's through a window!) so I'm going to use a bulb that's both a basking and UVB light as advised from the breader. Quite pricey but it the UVB lasts for a year so you don't have to buy it every 3 months like the separate one. It's also pretty dry in the winter so I will need to make sure my beardie stays hydrated! Once I have my dragon for a while and feel comfy with it I will get another snake too! I miss my little corny noodle! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I’m in central Florida and keep mine outside. However, he’s not in direct sunlight all the time. The way I have his cage, only the top half of his cage gets sunlight for 7 hours. His cage has two levels. So he can freely go up and bask but go down if he doesn’t feel like it. At the bottom level I have UVB lamps going 24/7, LEDs and all. In the back of his enclosure I have installed a small exhaust fan for airflow. Never had an issue.

And i just want to be sure that my lil guy will be okay, my second question is about tank size ive seen a lot of people recommend 48''x24''x24'' enclosures i just wanted to know if my 48''x24''x18"enclosure would be fine for the time being i plan on getting him into a 120 gallon enclosure by the end of the year i just need to make space for it.

@cold blood creations I live in Nevada, Pico is in a 40 gallon breeder at the moment. Pico has a water bowl with dechlorinated water. I cannot get the RH above 7% on the basking side and 13% on cool side. I have a baby humidifier (dechlorinated water) turned on medium, with a tube going into the tank through the mesh top to keep it between 30%-40% RH. The tube drips a little condensation that builds up in it which is caught in another water bowl to keep the bottom dry. Is this all I can do to keep the RH up? I do not have the time to keep misting him/environment to keep it between 30-40%. Misting lasts a whole good 5 mins here haha.

What do you think of feeding the bugs the Flukers brand I think it's called, vitamin c filled water crystal things, they come already made up in containers and I've been thinking that might be sufficient but it's not exactly gut loading if they are drinking it all the time so how does that work? I thought gut loading always had to be done 24 hrs prior but does it still work if the bugs grew up on, and are always on an enriched diet?

These are the ONLY things my female will eat: Protein: Super worms, wax worms or Hornworms, period - nothing else. The ladder she’d eat all day but at $2.50 a pop, they’re too expensive to feed more than 1-2 per week for the few months a yr. I can buy them locally. Veggies: Dandelion greens, wild primrose leaves, wild strawberries leaves, celery leaves, basil and 1 (maybe 2) raspberries….NOTHING else. I’ve tried every veggie under the sun and from a list of about 30-40 things I’ve tried, the above are exclusively the only things she will accept. Most of what she will eat comes from my yard (I do not use chemicals of any kind, so I know they are relatively safe for her). I tried to buy dandelion from the farmers market but she refused to eat them but if I pick leaves outside my front door, she’s perfectly happy with those. I’ve tried planting herbs in her tank, she doesn’t eat them….they just die. I‘ve tried crickets (with or w/o calcium powder), she just stares at them. I’ve tried banana, hummus, tomatoes, pumpkin, zucchini, blueberries, kale, clover, hibiscus, you name it - this B@t$h won’t eat it!!! I’m so sick of trying to please this drama dragon it’s not even funny. Hoping to find her a quality new forever home soon!! Wish me luck

So... water bowl in Canada or no? Southwestern ontario, sometimes the humidity feels like death. But in the winter, I wish for that humidity lol. So... should I or should I not add a bowl? 🤔

Meal worms and super worms contains a lot of fat. So like you said, the best is to have a diversity in the insects. I've had bearded dragons many, many years and never had any problems feeding them meal worms. And I've never heard that it's supposed to be a problem feeding them meal worms. The internet is full of bs 😂

My bearded dragon won’t eat most insects he will eat crickets and that is his main source. He will eat mealworms after crickets and he might eat a superworm or 2 then won’t touch them. He will eat Dubai roaches here and there as well is this normal. Also trying to find staple veggies and fruit for him he will eat greens but veggies and fruits he doesn’t really touch. Any suggestions

Hey! If possible, I’ve got a question. I plan to get a bearded dragon, been doing research for about a year now. My room is large but it has two windows. I’ve been measuring and I found a spot, but I am not sure if I’m going to have a problem. I would like to put the terrarium against the wall, but on the wall across from the tank, there is a window. It’s a good 7ft away from the tank, and I honestly have never opened the blinds because I generally like my room dark. I do not believe it is in the direct sunlight, but still asking to see if this can be safe. If I need to move it, I will. Thanks so much!

Get the vivarium set up, get the bulbs switched on, and measure the temperatures for a couple of days. I can't imagine it being an issue.

Play sand is the only safe substrate. However I suggest when you feed them put them in a feeding tub when they eat.

Hey Thank you for this great video! About taking your dragon for it to take a bit of sunlight... what would happen if the place where i live its cold in winter, or like northern places where not much sunlight is received as a general basis through the time of the year, should we also have in mind a bigger dose of Vitamin D3? Thank you again for explaining all these things.
@ColdBloodCreations

You can use suppliments, but UVB can also produce D3 with a good quality bulb.

I am getting a bearded dragon eventually I am trying to research before I get one. I bought a 40 gallon kit. I have it set up. I live in New York I keep the house at 68 degrees so I believe I have to get a night time heat source someone suggested a under tank heater is that acceptable? I also garden and grow a varieties of sweet peppers, green beans, tomatoes are those safe for bearded dragons? Is there a list somewhere that is a good reference for good fruits and vegetables I have a lot of other small furry creatures I buy for as well so I just need to keep straight what they can't eat.
@raphaelwilliams1820
@raphaelwilliams1820 Год назад
Bearded dragons are basking animals, so a heat mat wouldn't provide what they need. Furthermore, heat mats/under tank heaters have been proven to be relatively ineffective at heating an enclosure properly and can burn the animal. 68 degrees is a bit low for a night-time drop but it won't kill your dragon as long as the location it's in does not go below 65 farenheit. If you need a bit more heat at night, I would recommend a ceramic heat emitter. They're no good as a main heat source, but they can raise the temp of the entire enclosure at night. Am hoping you have a temperature probe and thermostat to make sure your beardie's temps stay in check. Those 3 veggies should be entirely safe to eat, but I wouldn't feed tomatoes any more than a small amount once a month. Sweet peppers and green beans can be offered a bit more often, but I wouldn't offer more than once or twice a week. I also noticed you mentioned you got a 40 gallon kit, and I hope you understand the 40 will not be beardie's permanent home. It's a baby/growout enclosure. The minimum I would use for an adult is a 120 gallon enclosure, or 4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft. Even a small adult bearded dragon will only be able to take a few steps in either direction in a 40 gallon, which can't feel too good! The kit itself likely came with sand, which is an unacceptable substrate. Bad on their joints, can cause impaction, and other issues. Instead you could use paper towels to start while they grow if you're getting a youngun', then shift them to an organic topsoil and sand mix. Calcium sand is even worse, as it encourages consumption of the substrate. And if you made it to the end, this is a very useful caresheet that helped me out with my first beardie! Had to go through wayback to get it: web.archive.org/web/20210407221758/www.herphubdiscord.com/post/bearded-dragon-care-sheet

I have a question. Can a bearded dragon be kept next to a window with the curtains closed? Loved the video!🦎
@ColdBloodCreations
@ColdBloodCreations Год назад
Last year we were contacted by a lady who kept her dragon in front of a window. She said that the dragon was always mouth open. That is a dragons way of releasing excess heat, so I had her buy a thermometer. She told me that her room temp was in the mid 70"s. I told her that she needed to test her cage temps being near a window. Sure enough, we found that the sunlight coming throught the glass window was heating her cage to 90 degrees. So, even with the curtain closed, I'd be very careful and keep an eye on your air temp inside of your dragons enclosure. Also a cage in front of a window will fluctuate on sunny vs cloudy days more than I would like if it were me. I like to maintain pretty consistent temps.

My bearded dragon is next to a window with no shades. I don't have any issues. Temperature is maintained consistently with my basking lamp and the fans that I installed in the top of the cage. 90-125 on the hot side, 75-85 on the cold side. He has lots of options. However I also live in Southern California where we don't get extreme temperature changes throughout the year. Might be different other regions.
