Dutch name: Eidereend (Somateria m. mollissima). A horrible sight, yet this is nature: at first I was thrilled to see Eider ducklings because this is a rare breeding bird in Zuid-Holland province. The ducklings didn't seem to have that much of a hard time swimming in the high waves. However, one duckling got too close to the rocks and was smashed into it by a strong wave (not videod), apparently causing a lethal head injury. It made it back to the worried females at first but eventually it got washed ashore and fought for its life. The rocks were too slippery to try and climb down to grab the injured duckling but as you can tell from the rest of the video grabbing it would not have helped much, as it died within minutes ...

That must have been a painful way to go. The waves are repeatedly pulling the duckling and smashing him against the rocks on the shore every couple of seconds.

Hello Remco, What is really happening in your video is that seagulls are hunting the ducklings. The mothers are protecting, see them poking constantly their heads upwards ! Because you were filming those mothers, did you see at all what happened to that poor one and caused the injury? Because, I'd suppose a seagull may have been the reason - maybe it pecked the duckling, but then left for some reason alone. So did you really followed the little one all that time, since you were filming, too? It's quite rare a duckling gets killed by the waves that way. If so, he. had something wrong in his sense of balance. It looks so sad to see the once so majestic strong Common Eider population shrank to almost zero; also here in your vid two females having only 3 ducklings, and then only two. No good signs here.

The injury was being repeatedly smashed against the rocks while the idiot filming this did nothing.

What the duck. Took him a while to die. Sad but nothing you could’ve done. I appreciate you posting this in case I ever see ducklings near a beach like this

Exhaustion in combination with a concussion, or other another brain injury it sustained while being thrown against the rock by a strong wave, probably

Was there a chance to intervene and help or was it going to die anyway as it was separated from its parents and destined to be eaten by seagulls/herons etc?

Crazy the parents abandoned it. Normally they would’ve stayed close enough(obv not that close due to rocks) but still. I saw them no where near when you zoomed out. Like they knew it wasn’t going to survive 😮

Not this species: Eiders are true seaducks and actually live solely off crabs and starfish.

Poor thing. So, this breed of duckling does not peep loudly for help from its parents? I blame those adult birds for taking a trip with ducklings on the rough sea. And I blame the duckling for not peeping a call for help. All in all, it looked as though those parent ducks were doing a successful "only the strongest survive" swim. Sad.
@thetravellingnaturalist
@thetravellingnaturalist Год назад
This particular kind of duck, Eider, made the sea its home. They may feed close to shore because their primary prey consists of starfish and crabs, and those may be found near buoys and piers. What happened here is just a very unfortunate turn of events for this small duckling. A cry for help would likely not have been heard by the females, because there was lots of wind and high waves.

Check the text info with the video; rescuing was impossible and would not have helped; even a vet cannot cure brain damage in such a young bird.
@LivingWithGeese
@LivingWithGeese Год назад
@@thetravellingnaturalist Disorientation does not equal brain damage. Goslings and other small waterfowl can survive falls from over 100 feet. It's possible the duckling could have recovered.
@thetravellingnaturalist
@thetravellingnaturalist Год назад
@@LivingWithGeese I presume that you nor I are vets so we'll never know, but the fact remains that rescuing it was no option due to the fact it washed upon a shore at the bottom of a very slippery rock wall with strong currents underneath. Again, I strongly considered going after it but was advised against it by a friend, and I'm glad he did. Considering how fast the duckling died it could, in my opinion, not be saved.

@@LivingWithGeeseIt would have been dangerous to venture onto slippery rock, especially so in bad weather.

Sorry. I know. I just couldn't just let that poor guy die. As wrong as it may be in some people's view. I'd take it home and take care of it with an eye dropper w/ duckling food in a warm shoe box. If it became my pet, so be it. I just can't....I can't even finish this video.
@thetravellingnaturalist
@thetravellingnaturalist Год назад
I understand your feelings and I in fact thought about trying to rescue it; however, the rocks are very slippery and the currents very treacherous so I just couldn't risk it. It would have died anyway.

Sorry but you wouldn't have changed a thing. It would've still died and the only thing that would've been "helped" is your fake sense of self-righteousness. Don't be so lazy, please take the time to read the explanatory text I wrote with this video, as well as my replies to all opinionated people that (also) not read the explanatory text. And, newsflash, this IS in fact nature: animals get killed by and in nature every day. This adventurous duckling was warned by its mother not to venture too far in adverse weather; it did anyway and was thrown against a rock by a wave; it clearly sustained some kind of brain injury and died within minutes, not even a vet could have saved it.
