If any of you have a 1st gen Can-am Maverick. I just acquired one and am documenting things I do to it. Here is one of the videos if you’re interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4s0ugxxtUgE.htmlsi=IeWRhkQWjnC7lAoT
Bought a used 2005 silverado with 50k miles on it, in 2007. 14 years later, and just a tick over 210,000 miles now on the clock, it's been the most solid performing truck I've ever owned and the best investment I've ever made. It's only ever been into the dealer once, to replace the faulty Castech heads (under warranty).
I have a 2003 with 385,000. If you drive a vehicle you will have to maintain them. My wife bought me a 2017 for a retirement gift. I can’t sell my 2003 though.
@@5.0jeffro when I bought my '03 last Nov the cluster didnt work. after watching videos on YT the most common problem I found was just bad solder connection. went to Wally word and got a cheap solder iron and soldered the connection and works fine now. other than that the only problem I have found is the rust LOTS and LOTS of rust lol
My 03 has weird other problems like the interior lights blinking, the third brake light sometimes works. And the compass and temp on the mirror go crazy. All electrical problems.
Most likely a poor connection. Check the ground wire for the 4x4 actuator/switch. It's screwed into the outside of the frame rail, under drivers side. Road salt, dirt, rust= problems 🤙
I have a 2004 with 200000 miles bought it new and have never had any of those problems, it is by far the best truck I have ever purchased....all chevys are, and I have been purchasing them for years because of the outstanding performance you get from them...
When your truck changes between 2wd and auto it would be the fault of the encoder sensor on the tcase. Mine failed and that was the fix for me. Mine would shift randomly whenever it wanted
Yessir mine did the same thing and it was because of the encoder/transfer case shift motor. Swapped it out with a quality AC Delco replacement and it’s fixed
I actually just bought an 05 for myself, and the only issue I’ve had, same as you is the panel lights all went out. But otherwise it has no issues. It’s only had 1 owner before me and it was an older man who took great care of it. Thanks for the video so I can watch out for similar problems that may come up.
Same bro I got a 05 LT and the mf is top notch I bought it off an old guy for $9,000 with only 110k miles on it . I fixed all the cosmetic problems myself and haven’t even stuck my hand under the hood other than for oil changes and a sensor that went out . These trucks are really good trucks honestly I’d go as far as to say 2002-2006 have got to be the best models as far as reliability every model after that just honestly focused too much on looking pretty these mfs are TRUCK TRUCKS .
I always used to be a Ford guy oh, now I have a Chevy. I see why I was a Ford guy. Looking at all the issues on these things what a hunk of crap why did they even bother building these? I got it cuz I heard how good they were but they're not. They're crap. That's not trolling that's just the way these things are over complicated pieces of junk. Don't get me wrong it's a matter of which set of problems you want to buy, Chevy problems, Ford problems, or Dodge problems. All I ever hear about is pushing afford but mine never let me down nor does it actually happen where is these Chevy trucks are junk. I understand that used to be good but now they're just complicated grocery getters. Who the heck what's a CV joint on a pickup truck? Stupid
2003 SS with 100k miles. Drove from NC TO California and I’m about to head back. Had to replace front driver wheel bearing, should have done both but I’m gonna wing it
Still have my 2003 Silverado that I bought new. The cluster went out long time ago but luckily it was covered under warranty. I now have 282,000 on it and recently I had to replace all the brake lines due to corrosion which resulted in me not having brakes. Besides that a water pump and alternator is all it has needed. But watch those brake lines if you live where they use salt in the winter.
On July 18th i'm getting a '04 2500HD with 130k! Appreciate all of this so I can look out of these in the future! Also are you in the BCS area I swear I've seen this truck around my town!!
I own 04 got from brother in law up in Traverse City Mich. He had 4 wd diff.go out, gauge cluster fixed, i had both hubs replaced and corroded brake lines too. It has 187k on it now. I got it at 155k. Runs like new. 5.3. Not bad considering it had a tough life up north in severe snow rust belt conditions and its a favorite pastime to go 2 tracking in the woods up there.
A lot of people are misunderstanding this video. Most of these ARE common problems. I have owned 3 of these trucks. Some of these are just regular issues that come with any vehicle but I tell you the mileage it happened to me so maybe can help someone out looking to get one of these. These trucks are solid. This isn’t a hate video.
I am surprised I did not say hub assemblies since I did one like a month before this as well as headliner since mine was drooping bad. Idk if you can tell in this video lol
@@5.0jeffro Never had a problem with my headliner. That problem is usually due to smokers. Cigarette smoke destroys the adhesives. Can't blame GM for that. Rockers and cab corners rust very easily on these trucks. What about TPS? Ever have that go out on you? I have mostly electrical issues with mine. Cluster and headlights pulsate when the engine is running. Cleaned ground connections on the frame and reattached with dielectric grease and still have the problem. I'm thinking the voltage regulator is bad OR the ground on the firewall behind the engine is bad, and you cant really get to that one
Hey man I've had the same problem with my 03 with the "4wd" situation that you are having try replacing the encoder motor on the transfer case mine would go into auto 4wd about 3 times in a row when I would crank the truck after I used 4wd once so I'd try replacing it its not too expensive but I figured I'd try to help you out so you won't have that problem anymore let me know if you try that and if it works
I replaced the encoder motor before but it was not a new one. It was a spare my buddy had off a used truck. Who knows it could have been messed up too. I sold the truck a few months after this video but I told the guy that I thought that was the problem and to try a new one.
I wouldn’t be scared. Just check things and double check things lol. But it sucks because I had this truck a year and 15,000 before it started acting stupid.
I have a 2003 with 385,000. Just regular maintenance if you drive one. Same motor, not overhauled either. Did redo the transmission though. My wife bought me a 2017. I can’t sell my 2003
Just today bought me a 04 Silverado 4x4 5.3...275,000 but paper work on a rebuild performed at 200,000..whether its fake or not I'm not positive but seems legit...same issue dash lights are dim on mine and oil pressure guage just stays at 80 but all other guages seem to be accurate..but the oil pressure is prob most important so I will address it asap..i dont think yours is a lemon just to each its own with the issues..i had a 08 f150 4x4 that I swore was a lemon, was plagued with rust issues, had the 5.4 with its issues but I loved the damn thing.. I dont have a preference,I love the chevys, dodges,Yotas, just dont matter,as long as it can take me n the kids down the occasional dirt road and a trail or two,and is half ass dependable then I'm good!!👍 thanks for your info!
Yessir! I hear you! Hopefully it is a rebuild. My 2000 Silverado I sold my dad now has 380,000 miles on the original 5.3 but it’s sounding weaker every day. But if you take care of your vehicles they will last. This truck just seemed something was wrong every week. But I fixed mostly everything before I sold it. I couldn’t ever figure out the 4x4 problem. I’m sure it was in the transfer case. I have a Ford now and love it. I think my next truck will be a Toyota.
Yes it’s sad to say Moog is hit or miss now days. There used to be 2 different locations it was manufactured and if you didn’t get the US one you were most likely having problems. Now there is way better parts than moog.
In reality they are. Like some of those electical problems i fix with a tap to the dash. My older v6 i have blink my flashes twice to make my gas gauge work
@@bustabass9025 i get it. i always look for junkyard parts first before i drop that much $ on something like that. you can always take your average mpg and take a pretty damn close guess
@@michaelferri2623 I know, and I should have done the same thing. But I'm no mechanic. So when it comes to auto repair, I am pretty much at the mercy of Goodyear Service Center.
Love my 2003 2500hd 6.0. Still strong @277,000 miles....but electrical issues have been a problem for awhile. Surging lights and battery drain when parked a few days. Tks for the tips
I HAVE REPLACED MY CLUSTER IN MY 2003 SILVERADO TWICE 4 YRS AGO I REPLACED MY BATTERY SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE THEY KEPT DYING UNTIL I HAD THE PROBLEM CHECKED AND HAD THE CLUSTER REPLACED AND NOW 4 YEARS LATER I EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAD THE CLUSTER REPLACED AGAIN AT A COST OF $800 EACH TIME MY PROBLEM NOW IS THAT WHEN I TURN THE KEY THE TRUCK WILL START BUT IT IMMEDIATLEY SHUTS OFF, EVERY TIME SO I WILL HAVE TO GET A TOW TRUCK TO TOE IT TO A MECHANIC AND HOPE THE PROBLEM IS NOT TO COSTLY
Fix the cluster yourself. It's simple resistors that broke free from the board. Remove it from the truck. Open it up. Push on each resistor. The loose ones will move. Solder them back and you're done.
Could be previous owners not taking care of it. The 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 motors on these trucks are usually good high mileage motors. My 2000 5.3 silverado I had, had 480,000k miles before it blew. My 03 silverado I still have had a 4.8 but it blew at 200,000k but it wasn’t taken care of previously before I got it with 160k miles. Now it has a 5.3. This truck in this video the 2005 5.3 had 130k when I bought it. Motor was great it’s everything else around it. Electrical problems, the fuel problem, the 4x4 problems and the notorious 4l60 trans problems got me bad on this truck. A lot of these comments say I got a lemon but no. This truck was good for a year and a half then all the sudden all at once everything happened. As for the electrical problems my 03 currently has some of the same and actually more then this truck had.
Do forget about the transfer case they like to put holes in them. Also know for snapping the power steering shaft in half. Knock sensor, intake gaskets, g80 like to break. Your intermediate shaft for steering likes to go out and they will clunk if bad. Axel seals on the front diff. 2-3 shift in trans sucks that's why you put the corvette servo in, it holds longer and more of a firm shift. Door pins suck.
I have had some weird electrical things happen on my 2004. Dash bulbs, air vent louvers, radio stops working and starts again, anti theft kicking in, wiper blades not turning off, fuel purge valve, etc. It is sitting at 340k right now despite the issues.
Check all your ground wires. A lot of they electrical problems are bad grounds. The motors are strong on these truck. But electronics and 4l60 trans are not haha
Damn I'm not so optimistic now anout this 04 very similar i was finna get . buying mtv first truck need it for work operations around town more than anything(manage community garden / tillong community gardens and residentials , towing trailer . It has 260,000 for 6k, not even ready said( transmission slippin /back fire ). Iain got time to be broke down lol , but I'm finna sell my bike 08 r1 for 4500 , i guess i just keep that to the side for repairs on this big bad beauty . what you advise brother , keep lookin ? Or make a grab ? Thanks for this video btw
Every vehicle is going to have problems, you can drive these trucks literally forever so long as you take care of them and keep up with your maintenance. The more manual options you can get on these trucks, the better
There is one thing you all are not considering. Your trucks are getting old. When you get past 100,000 miles stuff starts to wear out. When your parents were your age a vehicle with 100,000 miles was likely got one wheel in the bone yard. The problems you are talking about started at 75,000 mi. If you lived where it snows it probably has a good bit of rust around the wheel wells and doors. Everything you named are common on all Silverado's and Sierras. I got one of each. Same problems. Mine are both near 250,000. If you want to keep it, fix it. If not sell it. If you do keep it We would be grateful if you post it. Complaining about the vehicle that you bought makes you seem a little lets say, young at heart. So thank in advance for the things you learn and post for the rest of us to learn from.
Another common problem is that the fuel level sensor or float whatever you want to call it. They commonly fail in these trucks. The level sensor has a 2 prong detent needles that go up and down on a guage in the the tank. The problem is that one of the needles or prongs what have you. Do break off and can cause a false reading on the fuel guage. You can fill the tank up and when you start it it would read zero gas light on then once in awhile it would read properly. Depending on your driving habits and such. I currently have this problem on my 2003 z71 1500 extended cab. Not a huge issue to me. My fuel guage reads properly about 65% of the time or so. You could calculate mileage whatever you want. Mine is the extended cab with the 6 foot bed. Which has a 26 gallon tank. You can fix this issue by either dropping the fuel tank and replacing it which if you do I recommend having it done on a tank close to empty because it can be heavy. Or you could remove the truck bed. Unbolt and disconnect the wiring harness to the taillights amd trailer hitch of equipped. Both can be done at home with a tool set and a couple of buddies. Don't forget to be safe when working around gasoline and fuel tanks and the vapors. No cell phones or cigarettes. Hope this helps. Sorry for the long comment
Body control module is known for going bad. And causing the battery to drain after sitting a couple of days. And you have to remove the body ground wire under the drivers side, and clean it and put it back. That will solve a lot of problems.
With your 4x4 problem the is a ground right under your door by one of the cab mounts it sometimes gets a bad connection. I have the 4x4 on the floor so i dont have the same problem. Mines a 05
My 04 would be in various transfer case positions on startup. Changed my switch as well and kept doing it. Finally got a service 4wd code and changed my transfer case motor and it’s been fine. 282,000 miles and going.
I had my blend actuator go out , Blower motor resister went out. I redid my whole front end at 199000 miles. I did replace my transmission at about 165000. My knock sensor, oil pressure sensor and oil pump also went out.
If stuff has been maintained and stuff has already been replaced go for it. But 230,000 is a bit for $5000. Cause I bought this one with 133,000 and once it hit 160,000 it’s like everything hit at once. Electrical problems and fuel venting problems and 4x4 problems. The 5.3 are good motors. I have a 2000 that has 320,000 miles on it with a tune and everything. Still going but getting weak.
I've had my 06 for about 6 months I've already replaced the transmission the master brake cylinder, the oil pressure sensor , and I grinded off the safety feature for the spare tire so now it lowers so now after listening to your headaches with this truck I think I'm going to sell it
The transfer case shifting issue is most likely the ground. They rust up and stop connecting. It is located on the Drivers side frame/cab mount under the drivers door. Take the bolts out and wire wheel the connection and remount it.
I have a 2004 Silverado and the electrical issues are coming on hard after 160k. Parasitic drain that has been a beyotch to track down. I'm thinking of just putting in a battery kill switch. I have had to replace tie rods, balls joints, wheel bearings, both front axles and a rear seal on the motor/trans. . . . which was real fun. Head gaskets were replaced. . . . I'm just hoping she chugs along for another 75k. . . .
My 2004 had battery drain problem but it was a problem with warning bell when you turned off ignition. If it dings when you turn it off , start engine again and turn it off. Something about that warning signal that sticks. This solved the problem for me.
So unfortunately with the cateyes the blendoor actuators always have issues because the gm jackasses literally pack them full of greese and eventually the greese covers the contacts on the board so b4 u spend over 500 bucks on good oem blendoors open urs up and inspect them I guarantee they r just fine use 99 percent isopropyl alcohol or electrical componet safe cleaner and clean the contacts off reinstall them and recalibrate the hvac system the fan wires also came with to small of guage wire for the amount of amps the fan draws and melts unfortunately so u will need to replace it
I had the same issues with my 04 cluster and AC harness also. Seems pretty common. Just replaced my injector spider a few days ago, waiting to see wtf gonna go out next. If it wasnt my Dads and paid off for Id trade it in. Sentimental value.
I have an 06 LT ext cab. I replaced the evap and relocated it above the tank. Transmission was replaced. Driver's ball joint. Knock sensors and harness. Sway bar linkage and bump stops. I dumped the spare tire mechanism and took it off. I keep the spare in the bed. Steering rack replaced. Headliner replaced. All the speakers, head unit. The AC controls replaced twice. One rear light assembly screws into plastic broke and I replaced the entire assembly. Intermediate steering shaft replaced. My blend door is clicking now and needs to be replaced. No leaks. Drives smooth and looks great. Paint is just now starting to fade and develop crows feet in the clear coat. Sounds like allot but that's over 15 years of ownership. ( Made in 2005).
I now its been a few years buddy but i have the same color and model of truck , ive kept mine running and going thru the same issues, but all in all its been a good truck to me. Greetings from Texas lower rio grande valley.
Jon Newbury after I had the wiring harness for the ac replaced it was perfect. But the gas thing I chased forever. And I never really found a solution before I sold the truck. It did it occasionally. That solenoid was full of water one time then it was a pinched hose. Etc
4x4 actuator motor attached to the exterior of the transfercase they somtimes stick. In auto 4wd. My 03 z71 1500 did it just one night and I had to switch to neutral put in 2wd move forward about 15 feet. Shut it off. Start back up back in auto 4wd repeated. 3 times. Works fine now. Have not replaced the actuator motor yet. 4x4 still engages low and high fine. Just keep a look out
On all your electrical issies or failures check your grounds .You will be surprised as to how many problems that will fix.....there are lots of grounds on these trucks and every single one of them has to be good
Hi Jeff, You're a lucky guy! At least you have a cool looking truck. I was thinking of selling my 2005 VW SUV Touareg, that has adjustable air suspension, all wheel, 4 wheel drive, with a 4.2 V8, and getting a 2005 Z71, so I wouldn't have so many nutty problems. It sounds like it will be safe for me to get a truck like yours, because it seems any other Z71 won't have any problems because, You're having all the weird problems. LOL! (I don't want to give you the list of weird things my VW has had since day one.) Do you still have the truck?
I do not have the truck anymore. Although, problems and all I miss it. Everything was fixable and some stuff was simple and easy to fix. I can only imagine the problems your having with your vw. I know those can be nightmares especially 4wd/ awd problems.
My truck has that issue when I’m filling up with fuel and right now I have no heat I figured it’s the heat control module or actuator but I love my old truck......, hey anyone have an issue the when going in reverse and gas it a little and I get a weird ass noise almost like the ring gear and pinion is slipping it still pulls fine and have no other issue figured I will tackle that issue in warmer weather. Anyone have any suggestions on that reverse noise hit me back!
The fuel issue really sucks and it’s embarrassing. I hated it. I thought I fixed it but I couldn’t get it to stop. I had to put the fuel nozzle to the lowest speed every time. For the rear end noise I have heard of a pin breaking off in the rear end but I think that would be undrivable almost.
It’s drives fine I had a bearing go out in the transfer case and had it fixed, but I never noticed the reverse thing before that but then again I’ve only had it do it once. By the way bro I’m lookin for a crew cab car eye 4x4 ole lady is having a baby so she’s wanting a truck and I swear I love my reg cab so much I’m gonna try to find her one but man they are few and far between that haven’t been rode to death ya know what I mean. If ya run into one anywhere hit me up?? Appreciate the tips dude, been thinking about doin a lil RU-vid’n myself but I don’t think there’s much can be done that hasn’t already been done! Lol!! Keep up your work anyway bro!
@@richardweddington3583 yea for sure. And yea I put a video out every month or 2. It’s hard working full time. But just make your own content. Even if it’s been done before it’s good to see fresh videos. I just make videos on stuff I know and give my opinion on things.
I have had 2 trucks my 03 and 05 that had all these problems. And if you read the comments it looks like other people have had some of these as well. I was only asking to find a fix.
Ford has engine problems chevys jave cosmetic problems. Take your pick lol. Unless u get a 7.3 a Ford has constant transmission issues and unreliable engine components.
Chad Hadley my Chevy had trans problems all the time. Then 4l60s are problematic sometimes. The engine was good. But my 5.0 f150 has been a good truck so far.
So, a little conmon noted issue, sometime around 03/04 gm started using worse quality wire, which has led to almost two decades of electrical bullshit. If you think this truck is bad, the GMT900, the replacement body style, is even worse.
🤣 big dreams lol looks like you got a used hard put away wet rig. With all your problems on that truck you would be better finding a less wore out truck with the L80 in it already with a 6.0 2500hd
Never had cooling problems just the normal radiator and water pump going out and some hoses. I know that truck was an iron block. Not sure about the heads.
Hot air, ac cables burned, my a.c went out during summer as well! Gas spits out stained below my tank. I cant fill up without it clicking off like if it's full , guess the sensor is flipped upside down. WHAT ABOUT BUMPER? My bumper is falling off the brackets broke ! I've noticed it's a big problem with a lot of chevy trucks
That valve thing is some evap and purge solenoid problem that would just keep coming back. I would fix it and it would last a few months but then get back to doing that. I still have an 03 silverado that I think is starting to get that issue. But I have seen it on other Cateyes but also other vehicle besides Chevy. So it’s some venting problem.
Have a 2000 sierria and kept dieing because of the factory alarm so tried disable it from utube instruction and it worked for while then open passenger foir and alarm goes off and after that no start ! So pulled under dash wire connect and truck started but can't pass emmissions because can't get a reading. , then tranny went cost 3 500 dollars ! Fuel gage dont work and this truck is one thing AFTER another so gonna fix what needs and send doen the road ! Had square body before and really no real problems because less gizmo modulators and computers that dont really need ! Truck looks nice with huge lift kit and wheels but everything. Got PRICE !
Just keep the truck rust free and you can fix the rest, and I mean literally. These trucks were designed to last you forever if you maintain them. If you modify it too much to be something it was not designed for, you'll run into problems. Even then, you can still fix anything you might fck up in the process. It's a fun street legal project truck that never dies
I would change your water pump and thermostat. They usually come as a unit. Try turning your heat on when you see the temp go up. If your temp stops going up and maybe starts cooling down your thermostat is stuck shut. So I would go ahead and replace the water pump and thermostat. That happened to me on an hour long drive in the middle of summer and I had to drive with the heat on full blast defrost 70 miles till I got home. Then I changed just the thermostat. Got to oriellys to get some coolant. Came out my water pump blew. So had to go redo everything. Don’t just replace the thermostat. Long story short haha
@@5.0jeffro yea it leaked a lot of water when I put water in it just to make it home from work and just all leaked out lol I had almost 150,000 miles on it haven’t drove it since don’t wanna make it worse I’m sure it’s water pump or the hoses are bad to possibly
2005 1500 4.3 has had some haunted paranormal electrical phenomenon that was due to poor grounding of electrical components attached to the bed.taillite bulbs blow but the fuses are fine. Now that's haunted...
The EPC computer fuse became melted, then the electricity won’t go. I change it and became with the same problem after 2 month. Looking to find the problem. As I find out, is a wire making grown, but I have no found any wire.
I have a 2004 2500 hd 6 litre LS 4x4 . I have the odometer display issue. I had it fixed once. I again have to tap on the screen and it lights up. I also have an EVAP valve not working . I had it fixed but it once again reads as a problem. The check engine light stays on because on an EVAP valve that doesn't affect performance. I have replaced idler arms but ball joints are good. I do love the truck still.
