Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra Buyers Guide! Everything you need to know before buying a used Silverado / Sierra.
When developing the new GMT 800 series pickup trucks GM have to be really careful. How could they modernize the Chevy/Gmc pickup without alienating the huge C/K truck fan base?
They made disc brakes standard on all models, provided buyer's with a new generation of powerful Vortec engines, introduced a stiff new frame with hydro-formed rails, and appealed to customers by offering a wide variety of convenience and luxury features.
Since this is a new generation of pickup truck that GM completely re-engineered and redesigned they changed the CK name to the Silverado for Chevrolet and Sierra for GMC. GM wanted buyers to know that their new generation of pickup truck Road better handled better stop quicker and was more powerful and comfortable than ever before.
In terms of the exterior design, the gmt800 series trucks were an evolution of the styling found on the CK 1500. The Exterior styling of the GMC and the Chevrolet we're much more conservative and low key when compared to the semi truck aesthetic of the Dodge Ram or the aerodynamically styled F-150 of the day. According to GM, their truck buyers were really loyal to the brand and wanted styling that resembled the look of the C K 1500 trucks. Compared to the Chevrolet version, the GMCs get specific body work for the hood, front fenders, bumpers, Grill, and finally unique-looking composite headlamps.
For 2003, the Silverado version received a mildly aggressive redesign of its front end. There's new headlights that are positioned at an angle, a revised grille with prominent Chevy bowtie, and a new aerodynamically styled Hood. The front fenders and rear tail lights were also redesigned to give a more powerful look. For the 2006 model year, the hood was redesigned and now Sports a power Dome look. This new hood combined with the aggressive front fascia created a more aggressive look for the Silverado.
The Sierra and Silverado were available as a regular cab, extended cab with three doors in 99 and 4 doors from 2000 on, and a crew cab starting in 2001 on the HD models and becoming available on the 1500 non HD in 2004.
In terms of bed lengths buyers could specify a fleetside 6 1/2ft short box or long box at 8 ft and 6 1/2ft sportside short box.
If you're looking to buy one of these trucks, there are some common issues that you should be mindful of when looking at the exterior of the vehicle. First and foremost, is rust. Rust can eat away at the vehicle's Body Work frame and bed. The most common areas for rot is the rear Fender arches, the cab corners, and finally the rocker panels. This is especially true if you live in an area where it's cold and they use salt or other chemicals on the roads.
When inspecting a truck, it's really important to get down low and look closely at the areas mentioned to ensure that rust has not taken over the vehicle.
In addition to the Bodywork, it's critical that you look at the frame to ensure it structurally sound. After being exposed to the elements, the frames can rust and sometimes even crack, making the vehicle on safe to drive. Take a close look at the brake lines and fuel lines as well. You'll want to ensure that these have been rusted through and are in good shape.
The interior of the GMT 800 series trucks we're also very conservatively designed and styled. Compared to the C K 1500 the interior was all new that included a large speedometer and tachometer as well as other smaller gauges for pertinent vehicle information. The sound system sits above the HVAC system and the controls are logically laid out and easy to use.
Some of the problems may run across with the interior of the vehicle include broken door handles and grab handles on the door panels, torn bottom seat bolsters, flaking or peeling paint on the dashboard and other materials, gauges that don't work (this can be repaired but good to watch out for), and faulty dimmer switches causing no dash or headlights and other electric issues.
The GMT 800 series trucks are powered by a series of vortec engines. The entry-level engine, is a 4.3 L Vortec V6. From 1998 to 2003 the engine made 200 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. For the 2004 to 2006 model year it got a slight decrease in a horsepower to 195 but remained at 260 pound feet of torque.
The next engine is a 4.8 L Vortec 4800 series V8. From 98 through 99 this engine made 255 horsepower and 285 pound feet of torque at 4000 RPM. In mm, it got a bump to 270 horsepower and torque remain the same, and in 2004 it got another increase 285 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

Did all the regular work brake lines fuel lines. Drone that truck till 356,000 miles and then sold it. Most need the frame cross bars replaced. If you can do the work you're self it's worth it. Back in 2002 I bought a Sierra L. S with the 5.3 Had it. Till 2016, when my wife totaled it 309000 miles on it. awesome truck. No problems. With it at all. By the way, the wife was fine. Next in 2018 I bought a 2000 Silverado with a 138000 miles. Just gave it to my son 8 months ago. It had 220000 miles on it had to replace The transmission. and the radiator. Other than that, it was a great truck. 4 months ago I bought a 2002 Sierra SLT with 55000 miles on it. One owner garage kept It's in pristine condition. It has 2 tone paint, black and Gray. With black interior leather. No rust whatsoever. I had to pay top dollar for it But it was worth it will keep this track forever.I love it

I'll go ahead and put this here in case someone is having this issue and can't figure it out. But, if you're slowly burning oil and have small amounts of white smoke come out on start, it could be the drivers side valve cover. A problem from when it was made, is that the valve cover where the pressure escapes, oil would get in there cause the hole was too big, and the hole for that excess oil to drip out was too small, it would get clogged. You can either drill it out to make it bigger, though you risk metal shavings, or buy an after market part, I haven't had a problem with it since. I have a 2007 chevy silverado 1500 classic.

The one thing iv learned is that these engines can't be killed but forget to change the oil and you'll have a nasty tick coming from the lifters always listen for a tick when you buy one of these to ensure it was taken care of and not abused also look at the exhaust manifold bolts especially on the right side near the firewall because they tend to break off otherwise these are the best truck iv seen they just don't die

I had an '05 GMC Sierra quad cab with the 5.3 V8. The speedometer would quit going down the road after about an hour of driving. If you followed the computer's oil life percentage values, the engine oil would have clumps in it when oil change time arrived. I had to keep the spare tire in the bed as the cable winch for holding it in the bed froze up and I couldn't find a replacement either from the dealer, aftermarket or in a junkyard. Apparently that was an all too common part to fail and replacements were just unavailable. This was the truck that finally made me swear off GM products.

Just use full synthetic oil and a good filter and it will easily go 7-10k miles per change. These really are amazing trucks that are easy and cheap to fix. Have an 01 with a 5.3 with 165k and it still runs and drives really good. They get weird quirks but are such good trucks and easy to work on and maintain. Just had to replace the water pump super easy and cheap. I do hate the abs systems on these I prefer them not to work. I love my truck and just keep looking for excuses to replace it but I can’t find any reasons. Just wash them good and often and it will prevent rust make sure to spray off in wheel wells and underneath too. Wish GMC made vehicles like this still

These are prone to problems with the front hubs. The tone ring rusts, the bearings get loose, and antilock triggers at low speed stops on dry pavement. Fuel lines, evap vent lines, and brake lines all rust out. Rear spring shackles rust and break if you don't catch them in time. I had the 4.3 with a chronic oil leak at the front seal. Had to have the intake manifold gaskets done when I found coolant leaking into the oil, too. Dash and radio light bulbs are soldered in and hard to replace. Minor but annoying problem: the pivot point behind the tailgate handle gets sticky and keeps the tailgate from latching. If your tailgate is falling open, pull the plastic trim behind the handle out and lube the pivot in the middle of the latch cables. Mine was a 2002 Chevrolet WT bought new. It had the rare 5 speed manual.

My fix for the ABS is to get rid of it. I have never liked the activation of the ABS and the few occasions it has gone off it was because of a failure in the system. I've had a few of these trucks, they are really solid overall. Rust is manageable if you clean it often. I live in MN and never had a frame go bad on any of mine but the lines and shackles have.
@AcmeRacing
@AcmeRacing 2 года назад
@@KoaGuy At 15 years old with 170,000 miles my frame was still good. The bottoms of the doors were rusting out and the second gear synchro was worn out. @loritobin2578
@loritobin2578 7 месяцев назад
Fixes that worked for me with the antilock activating was to remove the sensors, clean the hub assembly as rust develops and with that swelling pushes out the sensor causing the ABS to not work properly and activates when you are almost stopped. Check the sensor head to make sure there isn't any rust on it and clean as necessary. Add some antisieze lubricant onto the hub and sensor head and put it back together, and you are good to go.

There's problems..electrical, four wheel drive actuator, light duty transmission.. but some of them actually lasted quite a long time for what they were, fuel pumps and hangers, gauge clusters, lots of rust, this and that. But they were still as good as Ford and Dodge.. and believe it or not Tundra had issues. You just have to know going in you're going to have to repair it. I am not a fan of GM alternators and starters but they did do a little better than the predecessor model. Oil pressure switches and their design.. and avoid the AFM or have it shut off if you get one that has it. A little more gasoline is a lot better than an engine.
