Sir Terry Wogan claimed (in 2013) the common touch phrase was a derogatory term, as he remembered the words of the former Irish president Éamon de Valera, and described Boris Johnson as the "common toff". He debated the common touch - and who has it - as Catholics celebrated a new pope and Anglicans welcomed a new Archbishop of Canterbury, with Andrew Neil, Alan Johnson and Michael Portillo.

Sir TW created such a wonderful sense of audio wallpaper in millions of homes and travelling companion for those driving in the mornings to work. His talent was unique, and a bench mark for the best in entertainment broadcasting 😎👌

No, there are many Eurovision fans (as in, proper fans) who despise him. Not me though, I think he’s a bloody legend.

What a wonderful broadcaster he was! I can still recall his repartee with "deadly" Alan Dedicoat, and his on-air flirting with Fran Godfrey. Terry was one of a kind!

Boris Johnson - they wouldn't put him in charge of anything. Oh dear Sir Tel, if only you knew.

Old Tel had the foresight to check out before the farce of Brexit, the nightmare of Boris and the cataclysm of Trump.

But the way Terry immediately dismissed the assertion by Neil at 4.04 that Boris had any authenticity showed how astute a judge of character Terry was

I don’t think Margaret Thatcher is a great example of someone who had the common touch. 😳

There's clearly no question regarding who was in overall control of this interview. Andrew Neil didn't have a chance (he was brought down to size very gently)! Terry Wogan's mastery of broadcasting (and razor sharp wit) shines through in every word!

Terry did indeed get his point across very gently. Still miss him.

Class act. As he himself didn`t do that British obsession with `class`. He was as relaxed in the company of The Queen as he was with the `ordinary` man/woman on the street. R.I.P.
