I liked the joke where in Chang's takeover he says "fire can't go through doors its not ghosts" and then in the Halloween episode Pierce says "Ghosts can't go through doors it's not fire"
I love this nod too, and it was surprising that the callback of Pierce saying it happened in Season 4 since Season 4 basically tried to forget everything that came before it
WhatCulture also missed a very funny detail. When the Dean strips naked in season 3's episode "Documentary Filmaking: Redux" he was wearing the exact same boxer shorts Jeff Winger threw to the crowd after playing pool completely naked in season 1's episode "Physical Education".
In season six Jeff and Annie continuously talk to each other about “those stupid marvel movies” and how much they both think they’re overrated. This is the community cast mocking their former directors, the Russo brothers, who left to make the marvel films
You could make endless lists of these. Just a couple I found out recently: 1. the brick joke, referring to a screen writers gag where you introduce an object early on only to use it in a random joke much later, but Community does this with an actual brick (holding the door open to Troy and Abed's apartment building) 2. The space simulator used by City College is called the Cosmic Pioneer, so the image shows the letters CCCP, as the Cyrillic acronym for Soviet Union displayed on the Soviet space capsules (as this is the first time City College enters the fray, my unconfirmed theory is that City College got its name just to make this gag ;) ) 3. When Frankie texts the Dean for an emergency midnight meeting, not only has she got Angela Merkel and Condoleezza Rice among her contacts, but also Britta's parents who she just met in the end of the last episode, highlighting her insane sense of organization. 4. There exist, among many others, an Italian remake of Jaws and a Turkish version of E.T. making the Portuguese version of another 80s blockbuster Gremlins from season 6 all the more hilarious (and so ridiculously well done.. Chee-choo chee-choo !). 5. Latvian Independence Day, which was celebrated with a parade in the blanket fort, falls on the same date as the airing of the episode, November 18th. 6. The news flash about a bear attack on a children's party contains the line "LeVar Burton and non-celebrity companion captured by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico" 7. Shirley's husband Andre, played by the actor who played Bill Cosby's son on The Cosby Show, wears a Cosby sweater, and when Jeff comments on it he says: "My dad gave it to me."
You forgot about the hidden gems in their arguments. Youd think that when the whole group bursts into argument that it would just be a bunch of nonsense but really there are some hilarious jokes in there. My personal favorite was in episode one where you can hear Troy yell "I AM THE OBAMA OF THIS CONVERSATION". Absolutely priceless
Your totally right! I started rewatching looking for hidden gems and that was actually the first thing I noticed. ...was in their arguments. I didn't even have subtitles on.
My favorite callback is when Troy said: "Why am I crying? Was I accidently listening to "Come Sail Away" by Styx again", in the episode where Abed predicts the future with his videos. And when Troy leaves in season 5 thats the song playing. Also when Troy slates Zach Braff for only being part of a few episodes in Scrubs season 9, while he does the same with Community in the same season. I just love Donald Glover I guess
LOL! I absolutely love that Styx line/callback! And wasn't the yacht called Childish Tycoon as a nod to Donald's rap name Childish Gambino? I guess that's not a "Community" thing, but it was no coincidence. Also LeVar Banana Burton, his childhood hero whom he couldn't handle meeting, is on the boat after freaking him out in Pierce's twisted mind game hospital episode (Season 2, Episode 16).
Another cool detail in season 5 when everyone riots in the cafeteria about minuses you can see the bulletin board fall down, then a few episode later their entire goal is to get that bulletin board hung back up.
@@SnavenShake fun fact: The actor of Koogler is the Showrunner of Arrested development , which makes it some kind of inside cameo because noone knows the name and the shape of the Showrunner of AD.
ANOTHER DETAIL! In Season 4’s episode “Herstory of Dance”, The girl working in the coat check who hits it off with Abed mentions that she worked at a frozen yogurt place “before that old guy broke the machine” which is hinted to be Pierce in the origin story episode! I caught this on my latest rewatch and it blew my mind!
I had read about the background pregnancy and the Beetlejuice thing before watching this video, so they weren't entirely new to me. However, I did miss them while watching the show and only knew about them because of the Internet. Unlike most videos like this, where practically every "missed detail" in other shows was obvious.
Here are some more details you missed: In Season 2, Prof. Slater is referenced as a missing person in a bottom-of-the-screen news ticker. A later ticker in season 6 reports that Troy and Levar Burton being kidnapped by pirates.
@@ryanjohnson8614 I feel like Dan Harmon reacting to this idea in the recent Zoom reunion pretending to frantically take notes, saying "this thing writes itself" makes me think that's the last thing it would be about
Zachary Edmund noo you are correct that slater show in ticker, but it's on the annie jeff debate coverage by troy and abed way back on s2, not on ticker s5.
Dont forget how in the episode where Pierce seduces the new spanish teacher to give the study group easier exams, the scene where Pierce is passed out as the rest of the group studies shows him reading a book called "how to talk dirty in spanish"
I don't think that's a hidden detail. It was a main gag. And it was pushed even further when Jeff says "Anyone can do it" and then shows it for Pierce and Abed.
@@scottyanonymous4023 The fan-made video is titled "Gravity (Jeff/Annie)" and was uploaded by VeritasProductions. The Season 2, Episode 21 scene where the video is parodied can be found on the Community RU-vid page. It's titled "Jeff And Annie's Gravity Moment - Community (Episode Highlight)."
There’s also a great Community reference in Spider-Man into the Spiderverse where community is on at Miles’s uncle house. The episode is the season premiere of season two, and you can see the shot of Troy getting out of bed in a Spider-Man outfit. It’s also funny since Donald Glover plays Miles’s uncle in Spider-Man homecoming. So layered.
the creator of miles morales actually said that miles is based off donald glover because he saw that episode of him wearing the spiderman outfit. Aslo donald actually voiced miles in the animated version
Holy shit. I love Community, but that running background plot with the student throwing away the condom and Abed having a 2 season arc in the background, is just utterly amazing. Wow.
4:49 You show the dean in his cowboy outfit but don't mention that it's a callback to a Halloween episode where Jeff wore the same thing. Jeff even says "Is that...?" before the dean cuts him off and says "John Wayne? Yes!"
@@ignaciowakuluk8984 season 5 episode 6, she's the IT lady. I think she's Debra in this. Not sure. But she definitely was a different character before she was Frankie. And this was later indirectly referenced in season 6 episode 4.
I remember catching that myself, and my first thought it was about his alcoholism. Soo obvious.. That's like the end credit of him alone on the couch, instead of with his wife, at the end of Rick and Morty.. after he got a divorce. Dude lays it out there lol.
And what about Frankie Dart (Paget Brewsterin - season 6), who fired Debra Chambers of the IT departament, because she was never in her work station..... Who was also played by Paget Brewster .
My favorite detail that they didnt mention is on Abed's uncontrollable christmas where you can see a snowman (aka Chang, as previously established in the episode) spying on the group when they're going through winter wonderland.
@@nickdejager8873 I think you're being generous. Last time i watched an episode that didnt feel like it was just going through the motions was probably season 18.
@@meahoohenehene Being generous again, most fans of the simpsons actually agree that it went downhill after season 9... as for me i think it's season 12.
@@0725038 fair point. Season 12 is about the last time I think they had a good treehouse of horror episode for sure. Those used to be a highlight for me. But they especially have felt lazy for years now. Every couple of years though one segment will be good, but then it's drowned out by several successive years of meh.
@iostboy i never said people weren't watching anymore, but the quality of the script went downhill like a lot of shows. The office went down after couple season, community had the same problem.
I loved the way chang subtly followed the group as a snowman throughout abeds uncontrollable Christmas. You can see him slyly hide behind a rock when Abed warns the group to be careful and stick to the path
You missed a big one! In Ken Jeongs previous series, Dr. Ken, his character gave up practicing medicine to pursue his comedy dreams by accepting a role as a community college Spanish teacher in a new sitcom.
I thought dr ken was way after community but still non the less a cool reference to his community role. I love when shows/actors make a reference to their other work
My favorite was the pottery class one when Jeff is going insane Abed at one point says “Jeff you’re Goldbluming” and then Jeff does an impression of Jeff Goldblum while you can hear a subtle fly buzzing 😂
I'm not sure if they did this intentionally, but here's something else I noticed: in the episode where Annie loses her pen, Abed said he hates bottle episodes. The episode where they're discussing Pierce's death, the one where Troy decides to leave Greendale, is a bottle episode.
@@heatshield In Hollywood when a show is running low on budget they do a "Bottle Episode" It saves money by doing everything in/on one set. no need to build new sets or move equipment between shots.
@@afifluqman7818 correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that was when Troy was gonna be transferred to the Air Conditioning Repairing school and he meant that Abed hates when someone whispers something and the audience can't hear it until someone asks
In the third episode of the first season, Troy convinces abed that he’s related to Danny Glover, which is a neat nod to the fact the actors name is Donald Glover 😂
In one of the DVD commentaries (can't remember which), Donald Glover actually commits to the joke at one point, saying that Donald Glover is his uncle in real life. For a few seconds he has everyone fooled.
It might be back on. I think they removed it because of the blackface with Chang, but it might be revealed that it wasn't supposed to be blackface, and it will be added back.
yeah having only watched community this year i found out about this episode today and just watched it. i understand why they removed it but it was so good!
@@Max_j9578 okay... They did mean it and it was blackface, it was a reference to use of blackface in fantasy somehow being acceptable - but unfortunately there's too much history of hate to ever make it acceptable and networks don't want to be seen promoting use of blackface for any reason.
@@lc8274 I have no idea why I wrote that. When I first started commenting on RU-vid like 8 months ago, I just wrote down whatever. I'm sorry. I also was not very invested in "Community" and had never seen the episode. I agree it is unacceptable.
When Troy leaves to sail around the world on Pierce’s boat it’s because in real life Donald Glover was leaving to tour the world as rapper Childish Gambino. In the final scene you can see the boat is called the Childish Tycoon
I've heard the Beetlejuice one wasn't actually planned. One of the writers just noticed they had used Beetlejuice's name twice previously, so they only decided to do it the third time because they had accidentally set it up.
It's not exactly hard to miss but I love that Pierce's dad bequeaths his ivory wig to Jeff and then later in the show, we see Abed and Troy walk out of the dreamatorium in goofy dress-up and Troy is wearing it.
@@orangegreen3769 troy and lavar burton leave to sail around the world (because it was Pierce's dying wish) and then later a TV news channel says that they were captured by pirates
One very hidden clue you guys missed: Britta’s cat name was “Sophie B.” (Season 1 Ep 22, when she is taking to Jeff in the cafeteria). So the mix up in the Sophie B. Hawkins episode may come from her thinking she had named her cat after Susan B. Anthony or her having another cat named after SBA. Anyway, I thought that tiny little detail puts her mistake into context... because in that episode Jeff asks, “didn’t you have a cat named after SBA”, which is apparently not true (unless there was another cat). Perhaps SBA was the cat she had after SBH died.
I initially avoided watching Season 6 when Yahoo had the rights. So glad I went back and watched it later on after rewatching the whole series again, as it has some of the best stories and character moments of the series, and truly gave me new hope for a future movie.
Keith David and Paget Brewster of all people as a replacements, plus cameos from people like Matt Berry and everybody in the final paintball episode! It's a great season that I'm glad I finally got around to seeing!
I definitely remember noticing the black television screen in the animated Christmas episode. I was like, "did I just see that!?" It tripped me out. I had to rewind. Great cinematography and great touch. Almost made me tear up actually. (Also great symbolism/writing. I thought it really tied in with how Abed finally came back to reality as the episode came to an end, but only because of the support from his friends)
I’ve rewatched Community start to finish at least 7 times, and watched some of my favorite episodes at least 15-20 times. Not only does it never get old, but I STILL sometimes find things that I missed on previous viewings. It’s so brilliant and layered.
@@AlphaAceEX I know it is. And Harmon decided it was time to cover her up in the later seasons. He admitted he felt uncomfortable in how they depicted her all that time. Her Christmas song was supposed to be the ultimate satire of that.
@@Erawk I'm sure it was in an interview or audio commentary. Harmon suddenly felt guilty about all the short skirts and tight sweaters Annie wore throughout the show. So he had Annie get some kind of corporate job so she had to wear a pantsuit.
After starting like my 4th or 5th rewatch now, there's two other things that I noticed. In the first episode when Jeff asks Britta to join his study group her response is "what? The guy playing bejeweled on his iPhone all class has a study group?" but he doesnt have an iPhone, through the whole series hes seen using a BlackBerry, also in the first episode on the black board behind Britta and Abed it says this room must be signed out in the office for use and then later there is an episode were they go to war with some German students over the study room. There might be more things hidden on the black board but I've one just started the rewatch so I haven't noticed anything else yet
There's endless references on the whiteboards in the study room, a lot of them straight up have the episode numbers on them usually prefixed with gcc (presumably greendale community college)
I realized that the last episode, when Abed is sayin “cool” 6 times for every season chang farts at the 4rth one because it was the day they lost dan harmon
1:58 "The scene may be familiar to MCU fans" I think the Captain American reference was only new information to maybe less than 10% of Community's audience lol.
well that it was a reference to some action scene was quite obvious, and I guess for MCU fans maybe recognisable, but the fact that they even had (some of?) the same stuntmen was quite a nice addition.
These are hilarious and I never noticed. The Beetlejuice bit was one of the best in the show One of my favorite jokes was advanced advanced dungeons when Jeff says "fabulous Neil is still out there doing his thing in the background" and Neil just subtly appears in the background for a second talking to another student. 10/10
The first few seasons were fantastic but after Troy left it left a big hole in the show (Troy and Abed were a great bromance) Then it was Pierce and Shirley. I only recently discovered the series, but the final series just isn't the same without the original characters. Community is a fantastic sit com though, probably America's best in years.
yeah, i thought i could power through when pierce left, but when troy left too the group felt like it had lost a lot of its great dynamics. even though shirley was probably my least favorite, her leaving made the group feel too small
@@papaquaalude8227 yeah it definitely fizzled out at the end, a sad end to a fantastic series. Troy and Abed were the funniest out of the group, having Abed without Troy to bounce off was kinda sad. At least we had Chang through to the end, he was my favourite background character (his Changnesia was hilarious!)
yeah i don't know why donald glover left the cast, i'm sure there's a whole story i'm unaware of but the show did feel more than a bit empty without him in some ways, still great of course, but yeah
This show’s running gags and cameos with ‘Cougar Town’ got me to tune into that show’s reruns just to see them. It was a quaint, likable show. ‘Community’ has tons of small secret gags.
I just noticed that in “Handful Of Paintballs” from Season 2, you can tell from the character introductions who voted Pierce out of the study group and who didn’t.
You miss the best one: at the end of Season 6 Jeff and Annie bag on the Marvel Universe, which is funny cause they are 2 of the main characters on the show that didn’t get a Marvel Cameo while 5 of the others did. Plus the community writers in early seasons wrote like 1/3 of the Marvel Universe. I’m sure there’s more to it than just that but I thought it was pretty funny
@@Frosty-oj6hw Dani Pudi (Abed) appears an agent in captain America; the winter soldier. Jim rash (dean) appears as a dean (of MIT I think) in the beginning of captain America: civil war Donald glover (Troy) had a cameo in Spider-Man homecoming but sadly it was deleted from the movie. I remember seeing abed helping deliver a baby in the car in the background and I was so confuse on what was happening glad to finally know what was going on
Prior to this video; I noticed the Dan Harmon note in the bar, the monkey stealing the pen, Abed tracking periods (though not that date exactly) and the Beetlejuice in the background the first time around. There are so many hidden jokes in each episode, it's impossible to list them all. But, this was really awesome -- I never knew about the pregnancy running joke or that Abed was in Cougar Town, the Captain America fight homage, or that they were sending us messages on the drawing board. Time to watch the show again. Every time I hear the opening song, it makes me wish I could have attended such a messed up Community College.
Great video! I had noticed most of these at least in part but some - like the abed delivering a baby bit I definately hadn't seen the original link to the condoms. And the actual extra from the elevator fight scene in the background. Genius!
@@BRobMorris the last season, for the Americans here, I think is decent enough. Yeah it's nowhere near the first couple seasons but I still enjoy it plus I hate not watching it all to the end. Call me crazy but I watch the seasons after Michael left the office as well.
everyone is too busy wrapped up in other projects to get significant work done. If Dan Harmon decides to write the script, he’ll have to find time around Rick and Morty to do so. Allison Brie is shooting multiple shows including another Netflix original. Donald Glover.. well, does anyone really know what he’s really ever up to? John Oliver, HBO newscast. Joel McHale is doing his own The Soup style show on Netflix. The list goes on. If people want this to be a success and well written, they need time to schedule and work around the actors pre-existing obligations.
All of the main cast have said on several occasions that they'd be down for it, even Donald Glover seemed like he was interested in reprising Troy one last time. They just need a script written and schedules to be worked out, basically.
LoL. Are you talking about the Joel McHale show that lasted a season then vanished? Also, actors find time for several films at once. Writers can write scripts in days.
I’m always in awe of someone who can tell a good story. I’m even more impressed after watching this, realizing that episodes and jokes weren’t just written for that week, but often for episodes weeks away (see also: Breaking Bad or BCS). They’re playing 3-D chess and I’m watching like it’s checkers.
This is crazy. I watch the show every night because I know it so well I can easily fall asleep to it without needing to look at the screen to see what’s going on. But I didn’t see any of these things.
My head canon: The Darkest Timeline was set forth by Troy's leaving to collect the pizza paralleling Donald Glover's departure from the series, effectively killing one of the strongest dynamics of the show.
Pretty good list. Funny thing is I was also watching cougar town during the original airing of both shows and seeing Danny in the backround was hysterical
also frankies actor also played the it lady “debra” and frankie and she actually says in season 6 ep 4 that she tried contacting the it lady but her emails kept getting bounced back to her. so that actually adressed the multirolying in the show
A really funny missed detail that also seemed to foreshadow Troy’s departure in season 5 ep 5 was in ep 1: repilot where abed was talking about how in scrubs one of the main characters appeared in only 6 episodes of a season and left the show and Troy goes AFTER EVERYTHING THE SHOW DID FOR HIM 😭
How about the running joke about the (very short lived) NBC show the Cape, in which Keith David starred. Abed becomes an avid fan of the show, coining the phrase "Six seasons and movie" in response to Jeff angrily (and accurately) yelling that the show would only last a few weeks. Keith David would later narrate the infamous Pillows vs Blanket's episode, with Jeff asking the narrator at the end if he was in the Cape to which he replies "No." Then later in Season 6 Keith David actually became a recurring guest on the show.
In the last episode, Abed says he's moving to work on a show set in a video game studio, which the actor actually stars in after the show. It's called Mythic Quest :)
I'll add one gag I noticed myself ( I get most of my gag knowledge from videos like this one and comments) and that I have never seen mentioned anywhere: In the season 6 episode Basic Email Security, ( the one with the hackerzzzzzzzz), you can see the lunch lady's leaked emails for a brief second. If you took the time to read them, you can see an email from the Dean, who's subject line reads: Buzz Hickey Memorial Services. A clever way to address the disappearance of what was otherwise a prominent character. ( All the emails are pretty interesting, I suggest you read them but for now I'll leave you with one more: From: Vicki Subject: your daughter misses you...)
