Create Community and Belonging
Trish: The fourth critical choice that I made was to create community and belonging. On my journey, at this point, I was 30 years old and I still didn't have a sense of belonging. But what I learned is that belonging really requires purposeful and intent action.
I am so fascinated, Corinne, about your perspective today on the communities that you're a part of today or have been a part of that have supported your journey?
Corinne: What does the feeling of community really give you? I think it is feeling seen, heard and accepted for who you really are, which is a very basic human need. And so I like the idea of always trying to be a valuable contributor to society and community.
I don't really feel like I have any super defined communities because I'm a human being who wants to be connected to any humans that I meet in that environment.
I would like to invite everyone to really take it to a more human level of what even is the feeling of community and belonging that we're seeking and how can we create that in our everyday lives?
You can connect with your community at work or the community where you get your coffee or work out. It doesn't mean that building a community takes away your time or all these things I think that we have fear of.
It's just to be open to what you could receive by connecting with others.
Reflection:
Is there a group or person with whom you regularly interact, but you don't really have a connection? Perhaps it's the group at the bus stop, or the regular cashier at the grocery store, or the parking lot attendant you wave to every afternoon. How can you create a stronger and more human connection that will then build upon as you strengthen your sense of community?
As you're building stronger connections and communities, how, over time, do you begin to appreciate the basic similarities we all share as humans, even those with whom superficially it may not appear we have much in common?
