Compact Modular - What it sounds like and how to pack it for travel with the 4MS 48X Pod

We've all seen gigantic modular cases and it either puts GAS into overdrive or makes it feel so daunting to get started especially considering the cost of it all. For this video, I trimmed down to some essentials to see what you actually need by using only what I already have. You can start with far less than you think and you'll learn so much in the process. It seems to make a little bit of a case for semi-modular as well. It doesn't have the same allure of one cohesive case with a lid, but it actually worked out way better than I thought. Just as much fun was had, I promise!
I definitely want to help others like myself who have been interested in modular but haven't got started because of advice like "buy the biggest case you can afford". Though this may be sound advice depending on your bank account, it wasn't for me especially because of my rather limited budget. I'm years in now and have made lots of jams, many of which no one ever heard. I've dodged danced around so many "must have" modules for getting started and I think I've accumulated some sweet modules in the process.

Wow 🫡 This is at a production level that some of the big number subscriber channels wish they had. Welcome to a master class in how to make informative insightful and inspiring videos. BUT WAIT !!! Woah! Thank you so very much! I love making stuff like this and the heart of any of the videos are the patches. I love putting together a compelling patch with whatever I might have on hand and as I learn and craft, I love sharing it! I hope I can continue to push it with good patches and stay creative and lively on the video side too. I think I’m slowly getting better at scripting and having more clarity or easier edits and have chilled out a touch on the many extra shots but only for a bit. I’m looking forward to the next full one coming up and I just uploaded one yesterday with a jam video in about a week. Honestly it’s a joy for me learning video stuff and to be able to share these many thoughts about modular and my experience that go on in my head. Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!

Getting into modular and feeling like you need one of every module or that there are hard and fast requirements before you can make anything with it is no fun at all. Slow moves and being thoughtful though can go a very long way! Even as I’m considering what I might be missing it’s sort of puzzle pieces that I hope fit together but really, I already have enough to be happily making music for ever. I hope if you get into modular it’s encouraging and you can make the experience what’s right for you! Also, for what it’s worth, I still have to remind myself to go slowly.

Thanks! So glad it’s helpful. I figured I wasn’t the only one that was getting tripped up on too much compulsory talk of modules that you must have in order to learn. I think I’m into that wide open modular journey type narrative instead. Partly because that is my need out of music at the moment. Thanks so much! Appreciate that feedback for sure! This definitely wasn’t an edit that was the most efficient. I have a trouble making things in that way anyhow. RU-vid has been an interesting medium to try out to figure out the puzzle of storytelling around these modular synths I love. Glad the patches came off being interesting. Definitely more limiting to patch like this given the style of music I like to make always has at least a simple drum beat. Question for ya, do you prefer videos that do more of a patch from scratch or is a pre-patched explanation just as good? Good luck on youtube ventures! Let me know once you have something up!

@@turbotambourine Honestly I like both from scratch and pre patched, both have their appeal.. do whatever you feel like doing. I'm not sure which works best on youtube, I see a few people try both methods, but couldn't say what wins out. From scratch seems longer, could be a bit more informative I guess, but possibly tougher to keep the flow of the video going.. either way, I look forward to seeing what you do next.

@@Contang0 thank you! That’s so encouraging! I appreciate it! Yeah flow is tougher for patch from scratch because of the parallel audio but they feel like magic when you get it right. I’ll likely do both or a mix depending on the video. I figure a kind of “make your first patch” video could be nice. And I might try one on processing sounds cause I haven’t super explored that yet myself. Lots of idea and lots of exploration to do in the case before the next one.

@@turbotambourine yeah just have fun, feel like if you’re having fun, I’m also going to… one patch from scratch I really loved was lightbath’s joy of patching videos, not saying ‘do that’, just that the unusual thing with those videos was that there appeared to be no pre planning, so you got both patching ideas and creative process. What I took from it was - maybe there’s a twist on these ideas….

Really nice photography and editing. Personally I would probably go crazy with how tightly packed knobs and jacks on that 48 HP system, but those two voices definitely ended up sounding great in the demos :)

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. And fair, that compact isn’t for everyone for sure! It’s really interesting patching with Makenoise stuff alongside some of the other tighter modules because that accessibility is definitely felt! On my larger case, positioning of the module with space around it’s key functions takes president over where things are in the case. It makes it a little strange to show people because typical logic flow would go in one direction vs being scattered. Jack positioning too right! That 3xmia is mighty cramped. I imagine if I do go with a 7u case, I’ll integrate some mixing that has a bit more space. The ALM solutions of late look pretty interesting. For this little travel case though, having two voices to throw around is just lots of fun.

Inspiring and informative. I’ve started my journey with modular with only a West Pest and some guitar pedals. Portability and how it works along side my hardware and soft synths is a priority for me

I’m still on the path of one cohesive case with one power supply and lid but I really enjoyed this setup for travel and will definitely use it again. I still want to pick up a smaller fx module and run a tiny setup with just the 48hp. A video for the future though.

Amazing! Glad you liked it and that resonates with you! A tiny case can be so much fun. I think I’ll take another go at the 48hp as the whole setup once I can get a small effects unit. I’m excited to see what I can get out of it! Even as I’m building out a 4u 104hp case, there’s lots in there if I want there to be. Very fun but I feel like even that would have been daunting for me to start with. I’m considering doing a short series on finishing up that 104hp case (at least one iteration of it). Though it leaves something to be desired, you can definitely get a whole groovebox out of it. Let me know when you have that 42 together. I’d love to see what you put together. New video coming in less than a week I hope. It’s a long one.

@@turbotambourine Great, I‘m really looking forward to your new video! Also I got the modules for my focus case together - I‘ll leave 8te empty just in case anything vital might be missing, as it is my first case. The idea is to have a versatile voice (a Plaits clone) in the case and the Mavis as a second voice connected. Hopefully I have chosen the right mix of sound processing and modulation - I’m about to find out how far the case can work self-sustaining (apart from the second voice) or if might need to add an additional sequencer to the game 🙂

There’s tons of useful stuff in there to explore not to mention that only being the start. Excited to see what you have together with it. Trying to find that balance of both creating stuff and also that being what you want is the key. Smart to leave 8hp free as it gives you some space if you’re missing one or two things. There are some pretty compelling compact sequencers to fit in there too! Ah eurorack is such a fun and endless process. Love it!

⁠@@turbotambourinethanks! Really appreciate your tips! Is there any compact sequencer you would recommend? I also have the Torso T-1 and the Korg Sq-1 in my Synth setup which I could use as external sequencers. In the case I got the Pip Slope (got the old version, as a bargain) for some envelope modulation and also included the Erica Synths Mod for some extra modulation. For the Mod it is even possible to create a sequence in a webeditor and then upload it to the module - if I use this I already have a sequencer included after all 😊

@@fosburybob3469 sounds like you’re covered! All of those are great sequencing options! If you’re looking for more only a couple come to mind right now. There’s vox digitalis, bin seq and also gliss which I believe has a quantized sequencer mode.

Thanks so much! That’s amazing that you’re creating regardless of what you have. Fully in the box never appealed to me probably because I used to play drums. I started with a pocket operator and then a broken beatstep pro and vcvrack. Slow progress is really nice and getting into vcv rack if you’re interested in modular is amazing! Thank you! I was just excited that worked out. The zappy drums felt a little bare by themselves so that other jam that didn’t really have a rigid timing worked out perfectly! I’ll definitely pull that out again. All that amazing content Makenoise puts out on tape music stuff found a place to gel even in the stuff I’m creating. Thanks! The foam you mean? That actually comes pre perforated kinda in blocks so you can pluck out the foam pretty easy to shapes. But yes there was a bit of that. I also just tore some of the bits. You can see it on the 0-Coast one in the corners.

Hahaha, sadly probably! I started into modular from semi-modular too. The 0-Coast to be specific. That is such a compelling instrument that it won me over to buy that 48x case to see what I could pair with it. At that time I was adding effects from my phone through a guitar in accessory so I figured an effect made sense so my first module was a Mimeophon. This is all to say, it’s been a progression and I think that’s a really great way to approach modular. The race to a full case seems like it would be a really hard way to get started. If anything I think my intention is to show that a small modular case can do more than it’s given credit to do and if the big case is daunting for you financially or otherwise, follow your gut and start small. For some a 48x might be their dream size even and that itself could be a long way off from achieving. Music tech is expensive but there are so many stops along the way where you can create compelling stuff. Listening a podcast like HOWA by Jamie Lidell is interesting in this respect for sure. Glad you liked the video! Since you already have a couple semi modulars, try to figure out one, maybe two modules you can add to really make a difference with your setup and see what else might be missing or where the music you create pulls you to explore more. Of course! It’s a travel eurorack setup. To be honest, I get motion sick on flights but say if I didn’t there are many other portables if I absolutely needed something while on the flight. The main purpose of this was to patch with my buddy and I don’t have another way of making music. I’ve been considering a hardware tracker for noodling but modular is definitely my go to.

It would be my dream to get where State Azure is at with his equipment! And I realize the the equipment that he has would cost a fortune! I'm to old now to start into modular. I just bought a roland Fantom 6 plus I have 7 other Synths! With the expansions and the models I can get from Roland it will be enough for the rest of my life!

I use a 32hp and 60hp cases for small jam/learning case. It really helps to mess with 3-4 modules until I really get them

I agree! The 64hp case has been wonderful! I think I need to round it out with a couple helpful modules so I can mix and match a bit better. Maybe like a 2hp verb or an fx aid would be helpful. So cool that you’re also embracing the multiple size cases! I think early on, being flexible and changing out modules felt daunting. Now it’s just a matter of having a place to put modules not in use haha.

I had some questions about how to order the modules.If the ghost is your end fx, I don’t understand why it isn’t next to your output module? And the bard quartet probably needs to provide pitches to the oscillators, so why is ghost between the bard quartet and the sound sources? It sounded delicious by the way!

So glad you asked. Thought I would have definitely ideally put the HPO on the right (my mind just associates that with output and where I have it on my main case) but the 48x case doesn’t have holes right to the last hp and that’s where the hole on the HPO is. Then I figured I’d just move it to the other side. Generally for module placement, I’m thinking partially workflow but access to the controls of the module take president so I try to put modules in strategic places so the module beside it doesn’t obstruct it’s function too bad. For instance on the Bard Quartet, I use that harmony knob all the time and it’s nice to have it in a location that isn’t going to get cluttered by cables. This kind of system seems to work well especially because I don’t have a huge case so I just know where everything is for the most part. To be fair, positioning could have been better another way but the baker and 3xmia are side by side in my main case so that set a bit of a structure for this one. That’s the beauty of modular though. I saw a great video where the case had a key module and that module was always in the center. That could be a granular processor, or effects like Ghost, or a complex oscillator. I liked the freedom of that idea.

Did you run a flying bus cable from one of the headers in the case? I have one of the 4ms 48hp pods and I like it but only having four power headers is a limiting factor. I was intrigued to see you add more than four modules in your case. But is that safe to do power-wise?

As far as I know from a power perspective as long as you’re not exceeding the power of the case you’re good. Perhaps thinking ahead and not having all your power hungry digital modules on one flying cable would be a smart consideration. But yes, it’s a flying bus board. I believe they make mention of using them on the 4ms pod webpage and I did buy a 4ms cable. It might also depend on the power supply purchased as well. Since the pods support daisy chaining, that would also be another consideration. I’m not a pro on power though. Funny, I was going to load this up with a really fun cottage setup but only had one flying busboard so I ran out of headers. Might try to see if I could get another one and check power ahead of time. Anyway, hope that helps. Oh also, I haven’t had any power issues that I know of or squirrely modules so you’ll probably be alright. Oh, just make sure you get the right cable. There are two depending on the pin requirement. For instance, since the flying busboard is the one with less pins, I would plug something like a varigate into the main header. Not sure if there would be a difference but I’m not brave enough to mess with it to find out.

Thanks and I agree! It’s really easy to use and really clear on the input in comparison to the Sony IC recorder I was using before. It’s a Roland R-05. My buddy who used to do wedding videography had it in the broken bin and passed it on to me. I’m soooo thankful he did! The mic input is busted but the line in works great for me! I was looking at the zoom h1n before getting this though. Likely a solid choice for a similar small and useful recorder.

I love the HPO too. If you take the panel nuts off and flip the panel over, it will fit in the far right of the pod.

@@turbotambourine It is super easy. The nuts aren't on very tight. You can hold them with a pair of plyers and turn them to loosen them. Then just unscrew with fingers and flip the panel. I was getting ready to drill new holes in my pod before it dawned on me.

Very fair on that observation of the text. There’s some rather short ones in there. For the most part they are just silly bits of text of they are short ones but they could definitely stand to be a bit longer. Not a hard fix. I need to work on the titling templates anyhow. Making the longer ones a touch longer couldn’t hurt either. Improvements bit by bit.

great video! most of the modular community doesnt understand that you actually need to choose the modules wisely, it has become a playground for snobs that dont know what to do with their money (dont know which module to choose? better get all 4 choices at once 🤣). most of these people can't make actual music and are satisfied with making random pointless plonks and noises. im currently trying to downsize from 3x104hp to a more compact case of 2x84hp+1x1U row, this will be more than enough. as you said - its definitely not about getting more and more modules, because this way it will never end and it quickly becomes something uncontrollable. having said that... this bard quartet looks really great 🤣 easy harmony generation and switching is something I seem to be missing and that frustrates me a bit.

Yeah! There’s much debate and everyone will learn and grow and figure out what works for them. I like thinking about if a module works or not as a workflow thing. Does it make things the way you want to make them? And then of course the space and moneys involved. There’s definitely ways to be clever about how you put together things so it’s an instrument for you. Good luck on that downsize. I’d be so curious about what you keep. The Bard Quartet has kind of been like magic in my case because I want to be flexible with melody but also have structure. I know I didn’t want sequences like I’d do on a beatstep pro so this just opened up so many possibilities. I’m curious about doing some chord stuff with it too. I mean, you could make some seriously intentional chordal drone stuff using it. That being said, it’s pricey and may not fit all budgets. If you already have a quantizer or two small ones you could get part way with a switch. I love the problem solving aspects of this stuff. Thanks so much for watching!

@@turbotambourine thanks for the reply! regarding what I'm keeping - I think I'm trying focus the system around morphagene, beads and ikarie filter + also some voice for the input to loop and mange: plaits and belgrad filter. I left the small pico dsp as well. then there's pam and uo_c, peaks, stages and muxlicer. this would be the core but I will be left with a few modules to swap around : warps, rings, braids, frames, clouds... I will definitely be in and out between these cases but the main thing about the new 2x84 is that it will be less bulky and mobile - so I could at least, take it to another room or sit on the couch or whatever 🤣it is indeed a constant work on the workflow!! on top of all that, BSP and maybe some polysynth soon to play into the system. all these MI modules I managed to DIY myself except the beads, which helped keep the cost down, and was also fun itself. Frames in step sequencer is fun with random button to VCA and quantizer, similar to what you do here, but it kind of takes a lot of space. nice talking to you!😃

@@racalik that sounds like an awesome setup! So many modules that offer so much! Well picked!!! Muxlicer is just amazing! I’ve been tempted to try and get one or diy one but hasn’t been the time yet. Clocking and divisions in one spot with a switch! The only thing I wish were implemented were a per step advance instead of clocking. A dip on the back even to do that somehow would be even more amazing or better yet a switch on the front. Maybe there will be a muxlicer v2 at some point. I wish I had the time to diy. Maybe in the years to come. So nice to hear from you!

I could not agree more! I think my first compelling setup was a laptop running VCV Rack and a broken Beatstep Pro. It allowed me to build and have knobs to control VCV Rack and also program drum patterns and play around with that workflow too. It also allowed me to start playing with the idea of using sequencers as control voltage for other things other than pitch. I couldn't recommend it more for someone thinking about modular. It's not a prerequisite but if you're not sure especially about the expense, it's a good move. And yeah, if you're interested in Befaco or Mutable Instruments stuff, it's the best.

Very educational! close to what I would consider as a starter kit. However - you spend too little time on the case itself. For many beginners (a group who would find this an excellent start) 4MS doesn't really stick out as the manufacturer and a quick visit to their website is replete with different options! At that, I'm pricing this up as does seem to be almost the perfect small size.

Thanks so much! You're right! I didn't spend much time on the case itself because I don't really have a great selection of them. This was the first case I bought to test the waters of modular to go with my 0-Coast and since then, I'm mainly running an Intellijel 4u 104hp. There's definitely other options too. This option has a decksaver with it which it didn't have for the longest time and it would make it way easier to pack. The ALM cases have the same and so does the Intellijel 4u 62hp palette. This is definitely the cheapest option of them and that's why I got it for sure. I'd also say that if you were starting from scratch, you definitely have to do a bit of research to see what would work best for you. This definitely fits the bill for a compact case and I'd imagine mixing it up should I need to travel again soon. Such is the fun though. Happy to answer any questions!

There’s so many ways! For melodic sequences or pitch, I’ve really utilized the arpeggios on the bard quartet which is a quantizer. I have another video on it that you can check out to learn more but basically it allows you to have 8 different preset scale masks for up to 4 different channels. There are two modes to use on the bard quartet. One is a continuous quantizer (taking cv in and quantizing it to pitch) and the other is an arpeggio mode (which it takes triggers in to advance to the next note in the arpeggio). How it all comes together is sort of the question of if the scale masks are going over single or multiple octaves, if they are similar lengths, how often they are triggered to advance, if you combine an arp with a random value and requantize. So take that initial question you ask and it sort of turns it on it’s head because the sequences can happen on the fly and be repetitive if you want it or very much not repetitive depending on how you set it up. Trigger sequences are happening mostly from the clock or some manipulation of the clock. When you think about that could be a clock, an lfo or envelop with a rising edge or even a random cv value otherwise known as sample and hold (that ones fun because sometimes there’s a rising edge and sometimes not). Anyway, I hope that answers your question. Thanks for asking it. It really is the polar opposite of an 8 step sequencer or a piano roll where the sequence you make is the sequence that plays each time you play it through.

Haha yeah! Ghost is amazing! You could definitely do that setup. I've run Mii rack before for sure. I thought I'd like the interface it being more touch friendly but actual knobs and physical patching seems to be where it's at for me. I prefer one cohesive thing and it all being physical makes it really fun to "perform" on. I've also tried effects running from a phone or ipad. Great for a time and for a budget but the ability to modulate anything by patching and no software trouble shooting has been kind of a dream. I don't really work in a daw at all so I can definitely appreciate if you do, the ES-9 being amazing.

That’s the first patch that you’re hearing toward the end. I kind of shortened the jams at the end cause usually each one is about 15 minutes. So you may not hear that exact part near the end, might have been earlier in the same recording. It’s definitely a goal that all the music you’re hearing in each video is something new I’ve recorded. In most cases it will be something recorded during the process of making the video. That way the idea the video is about carries right through from beginning to end. Kind of a fun challenge.

Haha very fair. I actually saw a show about a month ago where someone local played an incredible modular set. They were touring and setting a nee patch every night. I’m figuring they had 15u 84hp plus a couple other synths including a digitone and digitakt. Wild setup to play shows with if you ask me. Look Mum No Computer travelled with a pretty giant kosmo setup too! It’s a balance for sure though. But yeah, I imagine easy travel and patching is probably max a 7u 104hp. Then again Patrick O’Brian has done some sets with a 9u 104hp case. I think if you have that much modular, it makes sense to have a soot where it can all be at the ready for creating but have a smaller case you can load up for shows and travel.

@@vickbooz that’s too bad. I get vids for pedals thrown at me all the time and yeah, the algorithm isn’t perfect. Advertising and endorsement aren’t new really, you get the same for the newest mpc etc. I think any form of music making is valid though. Saw a video of someone singing through pedals and it was amazing. I’m not about to do the same though. It’s hard not to let it be like window shopping and I get that modular can come with the idea that you need everything under the sun. I’m not about that though and at most interested in the opportunity in modular to shape your own instruments without needing to know circuits. Beat makers will be super into the certain sounds of a vintage samplers and that’s not me. At the end of the day, we turn off youtube and make music with what we have right?

@@vickbooz fair. I wonder if youtube can really tell the difference between modular and other synths though? There’s no wires in my thumb so who knows. I think that expanding your ideas of what a musician may be helpful though. That could be someone making beats, modular noise music, vocal processing, ambient tape loops. There is a division between a pop musician perhaps but I think modular or not, it’s just a tool, just the way the Microcosm is or an mpc, or a pocket operator. I’m not saying modular should get forced down anyone’s throat though in the same way I’m sure you wouldn’t suggest whatever gear you have is the best way to make music. Anyway, for what it’s worth, this is just how I’ve chosen to engage with music at this stage of life. I can’t very well play drums in a punk band at the moment like I used to. My music time is slivers between the morning and work and when my kids fall asleep and bed haha.

I disagree with the narrative of having a thing demands that you need to validate having it by producing something with it for popular consumption or make money off of it. Well, I actually like the aesthetic of the screws better than knurlies and something about having them flat to the panel feels more accessible for buttons like on varigate, baker and ghost. Seems silly I know as I’m reaching in avoiding cables but just one of those weird quirks. It’s kinda like how I like to keep the solver face modules in one spot. Just feels more visually simple to my eye. I know most people love knurlies though eh!
