Does anyone know what to feed into the Harm input jack to jump from Harmony 1 to Harmony 2 to Harmony 3, etc? Can you feed it a gate? Or does to need a CV source of a specific voltage? Or an offset? Do specific voltages go to specific Harmony numbers? I can't find this info anywhere, including the manual. My goal is to have the BQ switch from harmony to harmony automatically - not using my hand to turn the knob. Thanks!
@turbotambourine
@turbotambourine Месяц назад
So fair! I feel like that would be cool info for Shakmat to include. A friend of mine got this info from them. Table 1: from CO to D#0 2: E0 to C1 3 : C#1 to A1 4: A#1 to F2 5: F#2 to D3 6: D#3 to B3 7: C4 to G4 To clarify, those note ranges can be represented in volts as well if you follow the 1v/oct scale. Also, make sure that if you’re using those values that you have the harmony knob set to full counter clockwise as I believe it will act as an offset. I what the logic was of breaking it down in this way and not just having 8 octaves. If it were broken in 8 octaves you’d be able to feed your pre quantized values into harmony and thus be able to create non-octave repeating scales, so ones that take modes into account. Want me to follow up with Shakmat more about this? You’re the second person who’s mentioned it. Also, do you already have one or are looking at one?

@@turbotambourine Thanks for the response. I've had a BQ for a while with expander, and I love it. What I'm trying to accomplish (using BQ or something else) is this: I want to use CV (gate/trigger/offset) to automatically transpose my melodic sequence musically in key. For example, let's say I've got a melodic CV sequence going in the key of "C" I want to use a gate/CV signal to automatically transpose the sequence up a 4th to "F" for 16 bars, then another gate/CV signal to automatically transpose it up again to "G" for 8 bars, then a final signal to automatically transpose back down to the original "C." I don't want to turn knobs manually, I want to program it to happen automatically (or perhaps randomly). I could perhaps use some adders, transposers and a sequential switch, but it gets complicated pretty fast. I thought BQ might be a better solution. Here's my idea: If I put my "C" quantization on Harmony 1, my "F" quantization of it on Harmony 2, and my "G" quantization of it on Harmony 3, then all I need is a single CV signal into the Harm input to move it along from harmony to harmony, essentially "transposing" the sequence. Less modules and less patching. Just so I have this straight: If I want the Harm input to jump from harmony 1 to 2, I need to feed it a pitch CV note that is somewhere between E0 to C1? What about just a standard CV offset value in volts? Can it just be a single note that bumps it up, or does that note have to sustain as long as I want the harmony? I emailed Shakmat, but they're probably at SuperBooth this week.
@turbotambourine
@turbotambourine Месяц назад
@@JayHughes-zv5qr I have another way at it but let me know if it doesn’t work musically for you. My knowledge in terms of theory is rather limited. By you mentioning you’d like to transpose your sequence up to the 4th, to me that would be just applying offset cv to that initial cv sequence in the time divisions you are hoping for. Is that what you’d like to do? You can use the transpose in on the quantizer and have that effect any or all of the channels and you can choose to do that via octave, pre-quantizer, or post-quantizer. Are you familiar with that setting and the menu? So you’d need 2 or 3 things to make that happen: 1) a cv sequencer that you can put in those voltages to offset the voltage up or down. 2) that sequencer needs to be running slower than the clock. That could be within the module (varigate has a div function) or with a clock divider. You just want to send that transposing sequence into the transpose in on the Bard. Then to activate the transposition, select the channel in question and press Edit to go into the Edit Menu. Then on the keyboard section bottom right quadrant you’ll see 3 options. The middle one is pre-quantizer. Press that one. Now any voltage above would transposing that whole cv sequence up. Now you just need to set up the cv values on that transpose sequence and you’re in business. You can make the length of that however long and epic as you want or it could be just the 3 transposition.
@turbotambourine
@turbotambourine Месяц назад
@@JayHughes-zv5qr If you want to utilize the minimal amount of modules though and you have the facilities to send just a gate pattern for transposition, you could use another channel of the Bard Quartet in arp mode. Set it to 0 octaves on the Edit Menu and 0 octaves on the Apr Menu, key in the notes that correspond with your transposition and then you can just send that channel a trigger to advance to the next note and then you want to send the out of that arp channel to the transpose TRSP in. Then have the channel receiving CV set up the same as my previous reply. Does this make some sense? Or does it work for your use? I love using it for transposing sequences or changing simple sequences over time. I was considering getting something like Ana 2 so I can also bring the upper limit of notes down or up while leaving the sequence in tact. I’m sure there might be a less involved module to do that also, still learning though. Might do a dive at some point to sleuth something out.

@turbotambourine
@turbotambourine 2 месяца назад
Exactly! I think the collection of modules has been made one at a time, each really focussed on the idea of which module out of a couple options would enable patches to expand in interesting ways. I feel a couple gaps while patching but you can’t really notice in the jams cause I think it is fairly balanced. I would be happy with some additional attenuverting. I also really want a 1 in 2 out switch of sorts. I think the branches clone “Flip” would be really cool for this use cause it has a couple different modes with it’s function, one of which is probability. I think that’s just an example of my approach though, it may add one thing but compounding on the functions of the other modules, there’s lots of possibilities on where to use that. Another gap might be mixing haha. Veils is pulling a lot of weight here! Mixing in 1u is trickier especially as having something stereo would be sweet. Prox might be a good fix for that. Thanks so much! Yeah! I almost picked up a Disting so many times! I have an ALA Baker which is a Peaks clone. I originally bought it for FM drums and now it’s mostly envelopes or LFOs. I love that it’s continued to be so useful (to the point that I haven’t bought another envelope quite yet) but sometimes the multifunction element of it made me feel like I wasn’t utilizing it to the most of it’s ability. In the end, I think multifunction modules are less my cup of tea. One exception would maybe be a Pams because of the options presented all work well together and aren’t completely different algorithms. It’s probably just that my brain likes to group functions. Undoubtedly though, the Disting platform is incredible! The sample recorder and player are not only so responsive, they’re so deep! Also brilliant the way they have the screen expander to the DX. So smart. And it uses that communication protocol from the back of the module too right! Who knows though, I will at some point need a small FX unit. Right now it’s a competition between Disting and FX Aid.

Yeah! There’s so many ways to slice it! I know someone else who had just got a Hermod+, got a quad quantizer and then ended up getting back to Hermod+ as the brain of things. So curious how you’ll find it. Mind you, if it’s the original you have, it’s a bit less feature rich so maybe could use the extra help from external modules. I don’t have experience with Hermod but the + definitely has some features that are pretty sweet. That CV recording that can be played back as quantized pitch, or just modulation is suuuper cool. Mainly cause a lot of CV recorders you always have to have external scopes. Water is definitely an interesting way at it because you have differently phased cv of the same cv sequence right? With some sample and hold to have the notes change at different times, that could be really interesting especially depending on what you want and how you’re going about sequencing gates on Hermod. Add a switch, so much fun I bet. Not super deterministic mind you. Do you already have Water? So curious how this will work out and how you find it. If you ever want to chat options, I’m pretty much always down to nerd out haha.

@@turbotambourine i have the og hermod and I have struggle to get good melodies with it (even tho I think it’s a really great drum sequencer), and i’m not really a keyboard guy, and I want to use ableton less (no midi). So yeah using two chanels from water to sequence my two voices on the fly with the a156 from doepfer for quantization with some quick option to change the quantization really appeal me. I think I’m gonna stick with this plan when I get some money haha and I’d make an update in few months ! But this module really seems great for one voice, maybe in the future who knows ! @@coopert4852 Oh yeah! I fully understand the slow changes. Money and patience haha. I like your plan a lot! It’ll offer up a pretty different workflow and a lot to play around with all together. You could also perceivably use your quantizer with sample and hold from hermod as an option to Water as well. I don’t know enough about how Hermod sequences melodies but imagine it could be worth a look. I’ve used strange workflows like sending an arp out of Bard Quartet and then passing it through attenuation and offset then putting it back into the quantizer to requantize it. Also, there’s always very simple 4 step sequencers that might be well suited to sequencing things like bass. Either way, hope you’re having fun and in the meantime, I hope you get a kick out of some stuff from hermod. I think I remember seeing an Ann Annie video with Hermod and Rings which was pretty fun.

@@turbotambourine yo ! So I have had a few patches with water + doepfer dual quantizer and I enjoy it a lot, really works for me to have so much control directly in hands. The two modes for random for water (the first one juste inverting a note and the second one creating a whole new sequence based on the value on the knobs) makes it really easy to create variations, and having 8 different stockage for drums sequencing on the hermod helps it to keep things interesting ! @@coopert4852 Love that! Funny enough, in this next video I'm working on, I decided to put Water in the case. It really is a great sequencer for hands on values, going from bipolar to unipolar and yes the randoms are great! I also like the 3 phased outputs as it presents different shifted sequences. Haven't messed with that and a switch but I feel like that would be a lot of fun as you'd be having a melodic line jump ahead and then back creating parts that get skipped and parts that will repeat. Really glad you're having success with that setup. So many ideas that pop up when you trade notes!

I agree! It’s a tricky module to convey because of the algorithm but I think the way it stumbles on melodies was pretty clear! It’s such a great idea and I was surprised how musical it is. Afterall, there’s a certain amount of repetition in music and this gets at some really cool bits of that. Wish I had a scope again for this video mind you to see all the different steps. I think breaking things down into a smaller case is something I’ll have to do even if I end up going to a larger case. It makes patches pretty straightforward to work around. I also bet as I continue this series I’ll come up with lots more playing strategies.

I highly suggest giving a sequencer a try if you haven’t as of yet! I had a Beatstep Pro for a while and that was fun but the flexibility of being able to move things around more freely was an amazing thing. Having a separate sequence to advance the sequencer and trigger and envelope and filter is just so much fun. Six Eyes is really great! If you don’t already have a quantizer though, I’d highly suggest that! It opens up a lot of options for simpler non-quantized sequencers. Then again, sequencers like Oct Tone, do both and can serve as a gate and pitch sequencer or just one at a time. Do you think you’d go with a larger or more compact sequencer?
@DougFromTheBayou
@DougFromTheBayou 2 месяца назад
@@turbotambourine A quantizer is also on my shopping list! (Along with more attenuators and filters!) I quite like the idea of a compact sequencer and I love the concepts behind Six Eyes where its less about plotting the specific notes and intervals and more about just entering some simple parameters and letting it produce the melodies for you. I bought Coherence by Metabolic Devices in the hopes it would satisfy those criteria, but I havent been able to make much sense out of it.

@@DougFromTheBayou That’s great! Ah the shopping list haha. I have one too that is ever changing. I agree! I like the way Six Eyes algorithm is pretty musical. I think part of it is strategy too around sequencing perhaps. Before I had a quantizer, things were much trickier but with a quantizer, it pulls a lot of things in line. Coherence seems like a module I’d love to see some demos of and will look them up. Seems pretty interesting for sure! I’m with you though, the more that’s sort of under the hood of something that you can’t get to makes it harder for my brain to make sense of. But if you did have a quantizer to stick after it, you could always take the pitch output from it and attenuate and offset it to different ranges which may help dial things into taste. When you get to that spot, feel free to drop another line. I’m down to help with that kinda stuff and get into stuff.

Thanks so much! And not really. This room has slowly morphed from a spare room / storage to an office and shelving has made all the difference in making it a functional space. At some point, maybe even over on Patreon, I’ll show the whole room and how it’s setup. My synth area is really just one opening and a flat surface in an Ivar 3 wide unit. It’s adjustable and fairly strong especially after you add some leveling out of the feet. (Super slanty floor in this house!) But yeah, it’s enough to hide away clutter and lots of things unrelated to synths and videos and over time I’m getting more comfy in using more of the space. You see a little more of the space in the video about the Biggest Foot. I do kind of want to add one more unit in the room for surprise, more storage, and to make that a cart that I can move about in the room offering up more flexibility in angles. Because of the little nook and having a bin right above where I film, I can’t zoom out any more haha. I think it’s an example of making the most of what you have for sure! Thanks so much! I bought really slowly and looked for what I was missing at each step! Sometimes I strayed from that if there was a good reverb sale on something I was interested in but mostly I thought about how to make the 4u a solid instrument so that if I could move to a 7u later, it would extend those capabilities. The 0-Coast helped me out a lot to understand many things and still have yet to buy a lowpass gate or proper dual envelope. There were many different stages and goals along the way. A lot you can see with the older videos of the jams with the beatstep pro. After that it was getting some sequencing in the case then figuring out how to sequence within the case without getting a very large sequencer. But yeah, if you do it that way, you’ll definitely find a purpose for most modules in each patch. I’ll likely go over more detail about combinations and what might be missing and found in 1u to fit in the case in future videos. Thanks for watching! Ghost is amazing and was actually a gift! I honestly couldn’t afford to put it on my to buy list so it was a huge surprise to receive it. I also have a Mimeophon. Ghost has so many uses and offers reverb that is big with long tails and and interesting delay and a filter. I tend to use the filter as performance vs a typical filter fed by an envelope. Another great video. A simpler one, and yet, it continues to do the trick. It's nice to see a small system like this that is well thought out. Each module sits well with the others. Seeing you play with the Knight's Gallop really shows the power of it. Very organic. This brand is really good at making a single knob turn feel ultra impactful and human. Good choices! For your 1U row, perhaps a crossfader? I wanted to suggest a Quadratt as well. Very flexible as you can mix, attenuate, offset, and it can also be a mini mixing matrix! By the way, do you sidechain your kick to lower the bass's volume when it hits? I don't think you do and Ghost allows you to do it I think. Check it out and keep it up bro.

Thanks so much! Yeah! Big fan of Shakmat’s approach and a company to watch close! I’ve thought about a crossfader! The Intellijel one has a bunch you can patch up and it could be quite fun! I always thought having pitch cv going through a crossfader would be great as you could have one sequence, the other, or many options between. I’m not currently using the side chain in this patch because the bass actually isn’t going through Ghost (I don’t think). What I could have really used was an inverted envelope especially as I already have the bass going through veils! Creyspace (I think that’s it) has 1u2hp inverters that might be a good add to the case. I could also just apply the sidechain and take the envelope out. I think it’s attenuated by the knob though so it would need to be on whatever’s going through the effects as well. I should look closely at the latest firmware though to see if they’ve expanded that capability. Thanks for the feedback! I think that could have helped the patches a bit for sure!
