I've been a company driver and an owner operator. Sold my trucks and went back to company driver. I'd rather do my trip, write up the problems with my assigned equipment and go home. They can pay for maintenance, fuel, taxes, insurance, wages and D O T inspections. All I have to do is the the job they're paying me to do. Not to mention benefits like 401 K, paid vacations, and health insurance.

Aside from that college is worthless these days. D E F I N I T E L Y do not invest something that big ($250,000 for a brand new truck) until you've been in long enough to know if you love it or not. I think being a company driver first gives you an idea of what you will have to expect & the costs if you want to be an owner/operator. I started as a company driver & stayed a company driver because I don't have the communication skills to hustle as an owner/operator & I like the peace of mind that I don't have to foot the bill for my rig. All I have to do is show up, do my pre & post trips and set up my truck the way I like. I spent a lot of lunch breaks at truck stops talking to long time otr owner/operator guys about what was involved for them g it really helped me realize I was better suited to company life. Not that they will see it or remember me, but a huge thanks to all those veteran drivers who helped me make my decision by sharing their stories with me & their experiences! I also learned a ton of valuable information on being a safer, better driver, which keeps me safe & coming home to my family every weekend!

It's been a real challenge and although I believe I made an educated purchase the truck has derated twice. New tires all the way around,, trailer,, lots of expenses you can not anticipate without expirence. You have to be highly motivated and have access to funds. I'm older and already retired from one gig. I would recommend company driver for the younger folks. Also OTR is a tough road if you have a young family. However for me the O/O was the way to go.

Get your particulate filter cleaned. Take it to a dealership that has a oven designed to cook the soot down. These ovens get a lot hotter than the truck can get it. Don't ever jump to conclusions in this industry you can go broke so fast if you don't know what you're doing. If you're wanting to go owner op, you better get some friends that are owners and talk to them to learn the ins and outs. Personally I'm going to be more than happy hauling fuel being home every night and making 120k a year as company. Owner op will consume your life drivers just ask anyone doing it right. Well there’s 3 actually. You can be a company driver, company is responsible for everything you can think of. Pretty simple, not financially risky at all. But not that big of a financial reward either. (Still good paying job nonetheless) Owner operator, you own the equipment, that’s it. You don’t own the insurance policy, nor any permits, and you have the company’s logo and permits on your equipment. They get you the work. More risk, but bigger reward $$$ Carrier, you are responsible for everything, fuel, taxes, maintenance, irp, ifta, ucr, dot inspections, insurance premiums, lodging, bookkeeping, finding work. You are assuming all of the risk. More risk bigger reward (potentially) you can make no money or make it big. “Our rewards in life will always be in direct proportion to our contribution, our service”. - Earl Nightingale

I'd say first start out as a company driver. Learn to drive, rookies! As a company driver you can make a decent wage, but you're limited to the company's discretion and it can change when new management rolls in with budget cuts and new ideas. As an O/O you're earnings are limited by your hustle...and your rig, so I'm told. As a company driver I've never cleared 120k. I know O/O half my age pulling 250k-300k yearly. They finally talked me into giving it a shot and hooked me up with their people. One message stood out to me: The money is there. It's hard to fail unless you ruin yourself messing up taxes. We'll see...I'm willing to fail and start over as a company driver if I drown. 😂

I see a lot of guys say company, but ik know man guys who actually never worked as a company driver and are doing very well. Its really for those who have a boss like mentality, its a hustle in them that they rather go get it and know how to manage everything. I do agree with doing at least a year but idk about 2 years or more. I manage my household now, so I don't think it would be any different but I'll see.

I've owned trucks and I'm now a company driver. I switched 11 years ago. If you have ability to manage costs and do at least some of your own work and maintenence on the truck then consider O/O. I would strongly recommend working for a solid, honest company and invest in a 401K.

Motivation and desire is a key element for most of us but, I’d wait 5 years. It’s been a love hate relationship for the past 7 but, at least can make a sound choice if I want to take on the challenge and headache/responsibilities of becoming an owner. Right now as of Mar 2023 I personally would wait.

When you become an owner operator never finance a used truck from a financing company the interest rate is very high always financial through your personal bank Get a loan from the bank pay for the truck that way you have the ownership and your name and her name and make the payments in your bank not a financial company. But when the bank finds out what the money is for that you are starting your own business they won't give you a loan not even $1 you have to play it just right Once your self employed business has filed taxes 2 to 3 or 4 years then the bank will give you lots of credit but not when you start up the business

I do not think it will ever happen. History proved that trading with other countries is way much better than producing everything localy. Look at North Korea vs South Korea. One wanted to produce everything localy and the other one adopted trading with other countries selling to them products they were efficient making and buying from them what they cannot do at a better cost. Even if the gap between rich and poor is growing, before capitalism and international trading this gap was even bigger. It is sad there still a lot of poverty, but back then many would have simply died of hunger. Now, at least, there are shelters offering food and help.

I personally don't find being an owner operator worth it unless you can buy that truck outright, brand new with a warranty and have your broker's license and you have some mechanical skills or know a trusted person that won't cheat you... one thing about owner operators the few that's succeed or the ones that talk the most, the many that failed, you'll rarely hear from them.

I would start him of as an owner operator and I’ll tell why so he can learn what a truck really cost and maintenance that way they take better care of the company truck instead of tearing them company drivers more than 50% don’t care of the equipment that is being handed to them. They have the is not my truck mentality.
@kevinalexander2787
@kevinalexander2787 2 года назад
Kind of a good idea, I see what you're getting at there. But if they don't have the integrity to take care of the equipment on their own merits, they won't make it 6 months as an owner, maybe that's a good thing tho. Another thing to point out is most people get into the business solely for the money. If they had to pay for the repairs, they wouldn't, they'd just drive until they killed someone or got an oos violation. Way too many hook and book drivers out there sitting in the cab watching RU-vid scoring their pretrip time.
