I was an owner-operator from July/85 to retirement September/19. Went through the whole shebang...had 5 trucks and 11 drivers at one time...drivers can kill you...especially when the carriers and customers play the 'rate game'. Finished my career with one truck that I drove for the past 6 years. Always told anyone who asked about being an owner op...remember this...you are a trucking company first and a driver second...never confuse the two.

This is spot on... I've been an owner operator for 5 years and this is exactly spot on.... Save your money, even when you think you have enough money put away, you don't, keep saving (you will need it) One more point I want to add is, don't let fleet management jerk you around, put your foot down with them and let them know that you are running a business and don't work for free.... You will be successful if you are smart.

Haha I'm not a trucker but I drive like 25k a year for work. Work is a mile from the house , so my car is a pos that I havent changed the oil in since 2013. What for , it's a 1200$ experiment. I think I've put 15k on it. I could take the work truck home if I'm out late. and if I've gotta go far I take the wife's new car if she's around. When it dies maybe I'll get something newish.

I believe that if your money is managed correctly, you can face every obstacle that is put before you. Most guys go out of business because of slowdowns in freight or a catastrophic failure of the truck both things that can be fixed by money.

I’m an o/o of a triaxle dump truck. My NTC400 Cummins holds about 14 gal. Of oil. What I do is split the used oil into clean 5 gallon cans and then every time I go to fill my 100 gallon tank I add 5 gal of used motor oil to the fuel. Keep in mind you’ve got to keep the oil free of dirt and debris but if you can do that, it’s a great way to dispose of used oil . Of course I wouldn’t dare try this on any truck with electronic fuel controls of any kind.

I've been out here since 1993 and an owner operator since 1999. I'm one of the lucky ones since my dad was an owner operator so I knew exactly what to expect. The biggest problem I had getting started was telling dad that I'd bought a used Freightliner as my first tractor...dad was a Peterbilt man lol! I still own that tractor and, until this spring, I've ONLY bought Freightliners. I took delivery of 2 brand new KW T680s in April but they went to 2 of my drivers. I still love my 06 Classic XL.

we have a big seasonality in our business so some of our OOs just say "the month of Feb, take me off the dispatch board" they rebuild their engines, so when they come back for March - January they're rarely down. The essentially drive new trucks every year

Found your channel earlier today and watched three of your vids, much respect, closest I ever came to be a driver was when I would go with my Dad when he was taking Winnebagos all over the country deliverying them and we would drive our tow car back, it was a lot of fun, but also alot of hours driving

Great video, great advice! Thanks Dave! Everyone should listen and seek out advice from several O/Os before taking the plunge. Best part was explaining how being an O/O is the same as being a small business owner. TRUTH!! Once you cross over, everything you once took for granted that somebody in the company would look after or do for you, you now have to do for yourself.... and PAY for yourself!!

When becoming an owner operator try very hard to buy a truck without a def system. That def system will break you in a hurry.

im a company driver but i would agree. my 19 cascadia has been in the shop 5 times in 150k miles. mostly for the DEF sending unit but i couldnt imagine the loss in down time over that. its bad enough it costs me money when it goes down.

Been a company driver for 6 years. Tanker all these years. Last three, I hauled gas locally. My house and land paid, kid is gone to college. I mad aprox 80k/year working Mon-Fry , 5 AM- 15:00. I quit. I couldn’t stand the fact that I would have to work 2 more years to get 3 weeks vacation. Went and bought a 99 FDL with a 60 Series Detroit in it. Rebuilt by Pittsburg Power 300k back. Spent another 7K just to make sure it is all good, the engine is a true 99, means paper logs. Shopping now for a dry van. I am buying all cash, I had saved some money. Insurance is kinda high, but I will still have money on the side to pay in case the start of the business is rough in the beginning. Question: Did I do it right? I sure hope . Thank you

Great vids as always. If you start out with 10000 in a "oh sh$t fund" and 10000 on a credit card and in a year those two funds still have that amount. I whould say your on the right path. Take care to all. Godspeed

Regarding the oil disposal, you can take used oil to any major chain auto parts store free of charge (up to 5 gallons). Another option is to take the oil to a shop that utilizes used oil to heat the shop. They are happy to accept used oil because when the barrel runs dry, they must heat with a money costing source.

How can a furnace or a heater burn used oil and not be polluting as hell? Is that legal? I'm not from NA that's why I ask

Good info John, thanks! Up here where I live they're trying to make burning used oil for heat illegal. Everyone here is worried because the alternatives are so much more expensive.

@@SmartTrucking I live in the states, and here, Walmart will take up to 5 gallons of used motor oil/trans fluid a day for free. I'm not sure if that's only at stores that have auto repair shops, or not, but the store I go to has a repair shop and I've never had a problem. They use to take used tires too for 90 cents each. I got rid of about 2 dozen, some car tires and some truck tires... it didn't matter, all the same price. I'm not sure of they still take the tires, but I know they take the oil. Off topic, but Best Buy takes televisions for free here too. Most places charge about $25-30 bucks to dispose of a TV.

Used oil is used a fuel in shop heaters or to heat a home. Its not difficult to find someone who will pay you a little to take it. Some filter the oil and use it to make "black diesel" in an older diesel like a 6BT - I wouldn't use it in my truck, but lots of folks do.

All great points and I know first hand how the effects of being home but not being in the home mindset can affect your marriage. The truck always came first - it had to as maintenance at home is always cheaper than broke down on the road. I was lucky in the fact that my wife is a CPA - money management was never a problem for us and money was always set aside for taxes etc. What I would tell any new O/O is to have no less than 15K cash in the bank and if you have a credit card, make it your last form of payment. Too many new O/O's get bogged down with payments that they can barely afford and it only takes one breakdown or event to put them into bankruptcy. Smart planning still wins the day!

Another great video and instruction guide, keep up the great work!! One comment I would like to make is about penny-pinching on maintenance. Penny-pinching on maintenance will always cost you double, triple or worse!! I am glad in one way that the electronic logs have done a number of these back alley companies in for good!! It is a waste of time to work for an owner-operators that just bought a few trucks and put them out on the road and ripped the drivers off!!

Thats 1 positive about living on a farm we have our own shop with all tools needed to do anything as well as 200 gallons out back of new diesel motor oil and a used oil tank that gets emptied every so often, going to save me money when I do get my cdl

For what it's worth, I'v been driving for 38 years now and have always been a company driver, and have thought many many Times of becoming an O/O but never made the leap, but in 1988 was when in was the most serious about , but desided not too, cause where things I just didn't know about, (I had to many questions, that needed answered) and forward 35 years, I'm amazed the things I didn't known, and the things I'm still leaning.

Keep in mind everyone being an owner operator does not mean over the road. You can be an owner operator as a local dump truck driver or what have you. If you want to be your own boss and have your own truck to see what will work best for you and how you want to go about it.

Great info. The verbiage you used I would hear my father say that had 40 years on the road. :) Most sound advice I have heard on social media. I am owner operator with Virtual Asst helping my husband and I because its a lot to drive and work on the paperwork after coming off the road. I scan in the receipts or have my son help me, the VA do spreadsheets to prepare for our CPA.

There tons of accounting companies that do a great job. $1200 a year and they get every receipt from your business card automatically. That’s not a big hassle.

I had that exact thing happen with my website; it went Poof out of the blue, and I needed a new one asap. Talked to the provider for the old one and got what I think is a good two year deal. If I didn't have the funds on hand at the time I'd have had a big problem.

That’s the advantage of having your own shop. On our shop we have an oil tank at the back and you can dump all your used oil or deisel out of your old fuel filters or any flammable liquid and in the winter we have a burner that burns all of it and turns it into heat

Being a true legit owner operator = owning base plate,owning the truck not leasing it, doing all paperwork with such business, keeping up with money management, keeping up with maintenance, keeping up with safety items insurance ,inspections ,keeping up with trailer expenses as well as truck , knowing what your cpm is on breakeven ,cpm for maintenance, cpm for fuel costs, there's much more to it that oh I'm an owner operator and you are just leasing the equipment from a company calling you a oo , by the way how much money are you putting away for TAXES!? You must pay your share also says the government, backside of health insurance, unemployment taxes,federal taxes ,state taxes , local taxes, if you say oh the company does that for you you say?? Then you are not a owner operator just a wannabe lease driver in my opion , nothing wrong with that but I don't see any benefits other than a early grave , divorce, child support and alimony payments , if you say I don't know what I'm talking about your wrong 32 yrs 3 million miles under my belt 2 divorces o kids o alimony , and being oo is a early grave for most . Good luck with the retards out there driving !

So true. There is a lot to keep up with. I was a lease operator leading under my company at 1st kept up with all of that but made sure there was a load board to choose my loads from instead of dispatched on loads going where I didn't want to go and loads that paid less than my cost per mile/per day. When the market tanked earlier this year had to make a change but by keeping up i knew within 2 weeks. Now lease from loan mountain and am changing companies cause freight where I was still isn't good. Again it was keeping up with the numbers that showed me it was time. Can be profitable in the game but you need to know your numbers

i dont really use cpm i use revenue per day and i know how much revenue i need to make to break even but i have paid for equipment yes its old but i have mechanical knowledge to repair and rebuild my equipment i think every owner operator should have some mechanical knowledge bc anytime you can save that 100 dollar an hour labor charge is money saved

In Alaska during the 90's, I worked for three owner operators that all went together and leased a shop for their trucks. They had a waste oil furnace, which is where the oil went from the oil changes.

working for other(s) is ok, but you will never have freedom as a wise o/o. don't listen much or focus on people who failed or have a difficulties running trucking business. no one of us are the same. set your goal, be confidence and wish luck to yourself.

Don’t get it twisted owning a truck can be expensive as hell and a headache. I’ve worked for my mom and dads logging business for about 4 years now and I’ve seen alota trucks come and go and I can tell you we’ve bought more than a few that needed new transmissions or engines and ALOT of work that just wasn’t on the surface when we bought them. Maintenance is also key the truck I’m driving now a deleted 2008 Columbia with a series 60 detriot just had to be overhauled with a rebuilt engine, brakes, suspension, fifth wheel, tires the whole nine yards and it was about 20-30 grand when all said and done with a little over half a million miles on er. Truck was on its third head gasket over three years being 10 grand to fix every time. If you can find a truck that’ll work for you problem free (for the most part) for about two years you can get a good head start but if not it’s hard not to go in the hole from what I seen.

Been there, dun that ... We used to figure that the load paid 3/3's. 1/3 for the driver, 1/3 for fuel and insurance, and 1/3 for the truck. Usually worked out OK as long as you didn't scatter a gear box or something ...

Thank you so much for this. I was considering leasing the truck I’m currently driving. There was a lot of stuff You mentioned that never would’ve crossed my mind in 1 million years. To answer that last question of yours I’m not that kind of person. I would’ve been making a big mistake. I’m a good driver but that would have put me under. After watching your video I decided that I will never buy my own truck thank you.

Question for you I brought up in one of your live streams that I switched from being a driver to working for the province and plow in the winter and you said you were thinking about plowing this winter. I took a one week snow fighter course before I started if you do will you take some videos of the course I wish I would have.

Hey good video, I definitely agree with everything you talked about. I was a owner operator for 6 years and sold my truck about 2 months ago it really just got to be more of a headache then it was worth. Now I'm a company driver paid by the hour hauling locally, and it's working out better, get to pocket money. Only thing I miss is not being able to drive a pre emission big hood truck or being able to customize my truck, now that I drive a company truck.

Thank you for the advice. Right now I'm working on getting my cdl and hopefully start driving next year. I like to be a owner operator someday but I am gonna start as a company driver and learn how to keep all my expensives recorded for tax time and stay as a company driver for as long as it takes, then consider buying my own truck. I expect to fail and have setbacks, but I will learn from them and improve. Wish me luck.

get a credit card that you use only, and purposely for trucking business. it will save you a lot of time. Today's card, online, sort out all expenses per items for you, listed and/or graphics.

I agree more than 500% about maintenance, 100 times repeating maintenance is not enough. PDI is one of the most most important key too success. no runs no money as simple as that.

Best way to dispose used oil is to take to the nearest machanic around you. Most of them use the used oil as heat in the winter or they do resell to the recycle factory. Remember, conventional oil when you’re getting oil change is that recycled oil.

We change our oil all the time ourselves. And we dispose of the oil free of charge at Walmart.The issue were having down here in the states this last weekend we literally had to drive all over Vegas all day long just to find enough oil to do our oil change. Something is up with the diesel oil down here in the states. From everybody that we spoke to even the shops were out.

So backyard oil changes if your local area runs off oil heat there is a chance that they will have a used oil tank there that you can take your stuff to and dispose of it. There are oil heaters that can burn it.

I worked for small trucking outfit and we had a small shop on the property that the owner lived on. We did all our own work and we were doing really well, but that's not possible for most guys. You need to be a mechanic to make good money being an o/o.

Man its tough! I am a newbie O/O and really it is harder than I was imagining! I guess I had some bad luck also cause I had some breakdowns in the beginning. But there is no giving up. I believe that it will pay off at some point, I guess we just need to keep pushing to the limits and hoping for the best lol

What breakdown did you have? Back then when I started my turbo was messed up very quickly sheeeesh. Thats what you calling a bad luck lol. Everything will come to its place bro just keep moving
