Just bought a refurb magenta plus from you guys for my parents. You guys are the best in your presentation and explanation. Keep up the good work Marc and team ❤
Thank you Whole Latte Love for the amazing content! I've been watching for a couple years and it is great to see the channel improving over time! Keep up the great work!
Hello, Marc and team, I've seen that the Magenta Plus does not have a ristretto option while the Prestige does. Which is the minimum volume the Magenta Plus can make for a espresso? Can it be set the same as a ristretto such as in the Magenta Prestige or Cadorna?
I just purchased the Magenta Prestige but have not received it yet. You explain when you first run a few to 10 brews, it will be weaker until it learns the coffee you brew. Does it go through this learning process for each type of coffee available on the machine or only on the first few times you brew with the machine?
Hey brian, Learning process is far more impactful with first use. Even then it's usually 3-6. Slight adjustments are made when you change coffee but usually not noticeable. Marc
Rarely comment but I have to say I really enjoyed watching this random recommendation. Explaining the types of coffee was very nice. Definitely going to check out those coffees used and start looking at Gaggia super-automatics
Hi Timothy, Well, really depends on the features that are important to you. I have not used the Delonghi much but we do occasionally have refurb units available. Marc
That milk carafe looks the same as the one from previous gaggias like the anima prestige. I own one and the machine makes very good tasting coffee specialties. However that carafe is a PITA to clean. The black top has plenty of cavities and hard to reach corners inside where the milk gets stuck. The sliding thingy that pours the steamed milk gets hot and watery in the bottom and some of that hot mixture of milk and water gets inside the carafe. Long story short, quite often I drink half a cappuccino made with spoilt milk and have to waste a carafe full of milk. You have to thoroughly wash that carafe and steamer daily in order to prevent spoiling the milk. I really wish they’d upgrade that milk steaming system cause when everything is in order, the coffee you get is really good.
@TVadicto100 - 2 years later.....is the carafe still a PITA to clean? I'm debating between this model and the Phillips 5400 (which has a simple milk system). wondering if you'd still recommend this machine? thanks
Great review of both devices. My question would be. The magenta or the gaggia cadorna prestige or the Delonghi Eletta Explore . Which machine is better? Thanks!
I hear you guys saying that the sound is not too bad when the machine grinds. Yet, when I read online about these machines, I see people talking about the fact that it is a bit louder than they would like. What's your take on this?
Hi YC, Thanks for the question. So there will always be some sound when grinding beans. Have yet to find a bean to cup machine that's silent. It's not very loud but I suppose that's in the ear of the beholder. The grinding sound from these machines is quieter than most appliance grade stand alone coffee grinders. Marc
Hey there, i received the Magenta prestige today and after 8 cycles, my espresso is terrible and my pucks are kind of a soup, not pucks. I dont use oily beans, any help?
Hi CK, I always start a new machine with grind set to finest and strength set to highest setting. It does take a few cycles for the machine to learn/adapt to the coffee, dose weight and grind size. Try a few consistently with grind set to finest and strength at max. Marc
Great review as usual. Have you seen the new Jura Z10? It looks amazing - especially with the addition of cold brew options. Hope you get to review it.
Hi Ser, I have seen the Z10 - I was at Jura US HQ in NJ a week ago today for hands on time with the machine. Now understand it runs about 4x the price of these machines but the cold brew is amazing - stunningly fantastic. There are a couple of manufacturers claiming to make "iced coffee" in a super-auto but they still brew the coffee hot. Not even comparable to the cold brewing of the Z10. On the Z10 you get exactly what you'd expect if making cold brew with a long 12-16hr steep time. Out of the Z10 it was smooth, non-acidic and fruity with the right coffee. The Z10 will not be available until near end of year in US but do look for my videos on the machine when it's available. Marc
Hi Marc and Aj,so I own the barista plus and I have a problem. It doesn’t extract 30ml espresso shot. It’s only 26ml. Doesn’t get to 30. Can you please give me an advice? Why is this happening?
Hi m, Finished volumes will have some variance due to variables like the beans used. Some coffees make more crema than others. If I were to program an espresso at 30ml and use beans which produce a lot of crema the finished volume including the crema might be greater than 30ml. If I were to switch to beans which produced very little crema and leave the programmed volume the same the finished volume may be under 30ml. In your case I'd program your espresso for 35ml and see if that gets you the 30ml you desire. Marc
@@Wholelattelovepage oh ok I see. Thank you so much. One more question please. My espresso is not as hot as an espresso bought from a cafeteria. Why is this happening? I’m selecting maximum temperature. Is there anything else I can do?
I have a dilemma. My husband likes coffee in a travel mug to take to work & I like speciality espresso drinks. I want a machine that grinds beans, froths milk & can fit a travel mug. Which one would you recommend?
Hi Stephanie, the Gaggia Magenta's spouts can go up to 5.75" of clearance, tall enough for some smaller travel mugs. The Cadorna Prestige mag be a better fit - it can grind, froth, and fit mugs up to 6" tall: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-prestige Another option is the Gaggia Babila which has spouts that can be pushed out of the away allowing for up to 6.5" clearance for coffee drinks: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-babila-one-touch-coffee-and-espresso-machine AJ
Hi Marc, a completely off-topic question here, but should I get the Eureka Specialita or the Macap M4D? What are your opinions of these two? Thanks so much in advance!
Hi AG, Thanks for the question. They are very similar in form. The Magenta is a more recent model with an updated color display. In the new display you can easily modify drink parameters right before they're made. Those can be a one time change or you can easily save any changes if desired. The Magenta has 12 drink options including: ristretto (x2), espresso (x2), espresso lungo (x2), coffee (x2), americano, cappuccino, café au lait, café cortado, frothed milk, flat white, latte macchiato, and hot water. The Anima has 4 drink options: espresso (x2), espresso lungo (x2), cappuccino and latte macchiato. Hope that helps! Marc
My Magenta Plus does not ask for saving. I changed all parameters on Americano, it does not ask for saving after the shot and the next time I wanna have an Americano, it is like it came with the new machine. No saving. Where is the problem? What can I do?
Hi L, Espresso/coffee is the same from both. It comes down to how you want to prepare your milk. It's a manual process on the Magenta Plus and automatic on the Magenta Prestige. Marc
Dear Marc and AJ, thanks for the lovely presentation :) I would like to test your Crema Wave coffee with my machine, a Poccino Superiore Forte. Is there any chance you guys ship outside of the US, say... to Germany? I would very much appreciate it. Best wishes, Sebastian
Hey Sebastian, Thanks for the kind comment! Unfortunately we only ship to US and Canada at this time :( Another of my favorite coffees that's similar is Maromas Orphea - maybe that's available in Germany? Marc
I wonder who would win head to head making a flat white, Marc or AJ… 😏 thanks for telling us the dose weights. I’m assuming it adjusts the grind size automagically too?
Hey squib, I'd win for sure :) but AJ's might have some art on top. Grind size adjustment is manual. But great thing is you can just set it to fine and leave it there. Big reason for changing grind is switching between espresso (fine grind) and doing larger coffees (courser grind). With one touch Americanos you can leave the grind set fine for larger cups of coffee and Americanos are better (IMO) than lungos! Marc
Hi Marc and AJ! I am wondering what does regular coffee from this machine taste like? Is it similar to drip coffee or rather americano? Thanks in advance :)
Hey Anna, Thanks for the question. I do the Americanos all the time. It's my go to drink If not doing straight espresso. I prefer the flavor of the Americano done on this type of machine to that of the same beans used in typical drip machines. And, these machines are far more convenient! Marc
Hey Sonja, You are welcome! Magenta machines are an excellent value. Best bang for the buck. If you want the ability to store 4 versions of each drink have a look at the Gaggia Cadornas. They brew exactly the same as the Magentas but have 4 user profiles so everyone gets their own custom drinks. Marc
Hey SC, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately we no longer carry the glass mugs with handles. They hold 5-6oz. I have seen then available elsewhere. Marc
Another great video guys but I have a stupid question in general about coffee… at what point on say the strongest coffee setting does the coffee start becoming weak? For example: 1oz espresso, strongest coffee setting, that’s going to be very strong right? 4oz espresso, strongest coffee setting, that’s not going to be as strong as the 1oz cup? Surely there’s only so much strength one can extract from a set amount of coffee beans? So more water equals less strength? At what point does this start becoming noticeable, have you done any testing at all? Thank you, hope you understood that 🙈
Hi Rob, Thanks for the question (and it's not stupid!). The strength settings on the the Magenta adjust the coffee dose between 6.5 - 11.5 grams per grind cycle. In commercial cafes the traditional dose for a single 1oz espresso is 7g and a double is 14g. In most areas of the world outside Italy the standard dose weight has been edging up. Average dose weight for a 2oz double in specialty coffee circles is ~18g. Nice thing with the Magenta (and all Gaggia machines) is you can set a single espresso of say 1oz of liquid volume using a middle strength setting which gets you ~9g dose. If you then select to make 2 espresso with that setting the machine will grind and brew 2x automatically so you'll get a 2oz double made from 18g of ground coffee. That's the technique to keep the strength up if wanted. You are correct that if you use the max strength setting and brew a 4oz drink from a single grind cycle it's going to be weaker. You'll be moving to a higher brew ratio using the same coffee dose with more brew water. Hope that helps Marc
Hey Todd, I actually made a video specifically on this featuring different non-dairy milks using the Magenta Prestige. Check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jO9l7oENq1Q.html AJ
Hi 60, If you like your milk unusually hot, go with the Magenta Plus: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-magenta-plus-super-automatic-espresso-machine Using the manual steam wand you can have it as hot as you like. Machines with automatic milk frothing usually froth to ~140F/60C the temperature milk gains the most apparent sweetness due to heating. Also the temp well trained baristas froth to. Marc
I've been following your videos and just got the Magenta Prestige - i love it! Quick question from a newbie - I'm trying to figure out how to make milk drinks, for example Cappuccino, in a large glass (10oz and up). I changed the quantity settings of coffee and milk, trying to keep the default ratio, but it's still not quite enough for a large glass. Any advice?
Hi vc, Thanks for sharing your Magenta love - congrats on your new machine! To go extra large with the drinks you may need to use a two step process. Much depends on what ratio of espresso to milk you like. The traditional Italian style cappa uses a single espresso of ~30ml/1oz with ~120ml/4oz milk. In US a cappa is most often made with a double shot 60ml/2oz espresso with ~120ml/4oz milk. To get the larger drink in a two step process you could program the amount of milk you want under just the milk function and make that. Then do a single or double espresso over the top. Another option is to make 2 smaller cappas into the same glass back to back. That will change the layering somewhat. Hope that helps! Marc
But there is something so special, truly satisfying, about pulling a shot you had complete control over. Adjusting the fineness on the grinder, weighing out your dose (20g Club), WDT, properly tampering, +/- bar pressure (experimenting @ 6 bars), water temperature control, timing your shot on extraction (1:2 ratio | 25-30sec), etc .. There’s artistry in that. Why sacrifice extraordinary quality for fast & easy ? Gaggia Classic Pro is $449.00 and is a terrific option for the beginner. Then you’ll fall down the rabbit hole like the rest of us and spend thousands on ridiculous home rigs !! Either way, you’re drinking GOOD coffee ! Cheers all
@@gosman949 for the average coffee lover, I think the machine in the video is more than sufficient as it should pull a decent shot of espresso. But would you rather drive a vintage Porsche with a manual transmission or a self-driving Tesla ? I don’t want to click a button and get to my destination; I want to feel the machinery and control it. Like espresso machines, you can either have a complete manual process or have an automatic process. Either way your getting to the same destination, but one might be a little more fun getting there :)
@@carmine4885 yep I know what you mean but in real life! I have my original 1979 RX-7 and my 2007 Camry and 2000 Suburban. They all get me to the same place, but in a different way!
Stuck between these two machines, I really like flat whites & cappuccinos. Is the quality of frothed milk on the prestige as good as/ a contender against the steam wand on the Plus? Cheers!
Hey Colin, Thanks for the question. The wand gives you a lot more control of the frothing process. If you have the skills no problem going from super fine for latte art or flat white out to airier froth for a traditional style cappuccino. Beyond that you can do whatever temperature you prefer. I know some (mistakenly in my opinion) want a really hot milk froth and if that's what you like you can steam to mouth burning with a manual wand. Machines which froth automatically generally go to milk's sweet point for best flavor at 125-145F (52-63C). Marc
Hi Phil, I definitely want to be here! As DarkShadowAy mentioned, different personalities with a common love of coffee ☕️ I’m glad you found the video informative. AJ
@@Wholelattelovepage Hi AJ. That comment was totally unfair. I find your videos very informative and love watching and learning. Keep up the good work 😊👍
