I just got my 2019 Chevy 3500 HD from the dealer less than an hour ago. It was hard trading in my 2015 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi but I just couldn't do 10 mpg empty anymore. The Duramax is averaging 19.7 that's what the dash shows who knows it has less than 100 miles on it

Heavier springs are an option on ford and gm. Plow/camper packages will also increase gvw. Spec your truck, don't let someone at the dealer spec it.

Great video, we went with 3500 SRW RAM bc we have a northern lite Truck Camper and it flattened our previous 2500 that the dealer told us had plenty of payload for our set up. The diesel takes 800 lb of your payload

The last chevy was a 2006 silverado that just was not dependable ever or safe when I traded it. Look up the ABS brake problems that they would not recall. I think I'll stick with Ford this time.

Thanks for the reviews. I noticed you didn't look at fords in the comparison. I have an F350 dually. When I road tested the truck, i drove the 250 and then the 350. I drove the exact route and even rode in the same lanes for both drives. I found the 350 actually rode better than the 250 did. The reason is that the 250 had 6 leafs in the stack, and rode rougher. The 350 used a split stack, it had a long single leaf that it rode on when not loaded. Then when loaded is sat down on a 5 leaf stack to carry the load. Because of the single leaf when empty, the ride was noticeably better. so take the time to look at the suspensions and how their configured.

I've test driven all three of the big 3 trucks since I'm looking to upgrade from a 3/4 ton to a one ton to carry a heavier load. You are correct, the Ford does ride much better. The real challenge for me is finding a newer gas powered truck with the options I consider "needed". Whatever I get, it will be the last truck I buy since I doubt I am doing much driving in twenty years due to age. Learning to pay attention to the load capacity is very important when considering to buy a truck. Any of the trucks will work, but if you don't pay attention to what you plan to use the truck for now and in the future, you may be wasting your money.

90% of heavy duty owners. They look cool and I can say I have a diesel and "I POSSIBLY/PROBABLY/MAYBE one day will tow a fifth wheel, rv, have horses, etc." The other 10% actually buy them and use them for what they are intended for. I hear Tim Allen doing one of his grunts in the background from Home Improvement when he sees these next to a 1/2 ton.

From the early '90s to the early 2000s, there was a huge difference between the HD and the standard non-HD. Today, they just slap the HD badge on everything. My 2000 GMC 3500HD dually has a huge frame which makes the truck sit higher. There's a filler panel below the front grill to fill that space. It has 19.5" 10-lug wheels, a Dana 80 rear end, a straight I-beam front axle, and leaf springs on all four corners. The standard 3500 (non-HD) dually had a smaller frame, smaller wheels, smaller rear axle, and independent front suspension.

1700 lb payload for a 3/4 ton diesel?! That is absolutely pitiful. Sad thing is, there are probably lots of buyers who buy a truck like this thinking they can tow 15000 lbs because they have a diesel when in reality they have no idea the real limiting factor is their payload capacity.
@crazyhass84

Great episode. Minor note on the trailer emergency brakes. The brakes should hold for a minimum 15 minutes, applying heavy drag if they're not necessarily fully locked for that long. Less indicates the battery is no good or undersized. This is per DOT regs. I've always felt the 3/4 tons gave you more towing capacity until you get to the point that you need a dually based on tongue weight.

Kcducttaper1 the payload is limited by the 3/4 ton class gvwr which is 10k pounds.
@Kcducttaper1
@Kcducttaper1 6 лет назад
Right, but that's still super low for a 3/4 ton. My '99 F-250 is rated for over 3,000 pounds of payload, which is nearly double of that Dodge. They've loaded it down with bells and gizmos so bad, you can't hardly justify buying it over a 1/2 ton anymore. Even for towing, with 10-15% tongue weight, you're still limited to about a 12,000 pound trailer. It's even less if you're loading people/gear in the pickup.

@Kcducttaper1
@Kcducttaper1 6 лет назад
Long term cost would be cool, but in all fairness, it's awfully hard for journalists to estimate that when they're only borrowing the pickups for a couple days. Diesel maintenance is certainly significantly more expensive these days - especially after 100,000 miles or so.
@jstring
@jstring 6 лет назад
Kcducttaper1 I am guessing by your comment you don’t or haven’t owned a diesel. sure they could be more expensive if you don’t know anything about your rig and take everything to a dealer. I deleted my 13 Ram 3500 6.7 myself, so no def or regen etc, and it costs me about 300 bucks every 10000 miles to do fuel filters and oil and filter in my driveway. And most diesel aren’t really considered broken in till after 100k

coil springs or air ride without a leaf spring is ridiculous on a big truck. you're buying a 3/4 ton its not going to ride like a Cadillac deal with it! If you're into RVing, especially with a family, then that 10k will put you over your payload limit ... particularly for the one in this video. 1,700 lbs is nothing. A 10k conventional trailer will drop at least 1,200 lbs onto the truck. A family of 4 will be north of 600 lbs. You're already over and we haven't even added the weight distributing hitch, a stick of wood, or even an iPad to the mix. It's worse with a 5er, which have a higher percent on the pin. 3/4 ton excels when you get a gasoline engine and recover ~800 lbs from the diesel option.

Payload is a total bs number in all 3/4 tons. They all have the same gvw of 10,000 lbs to stop from bumping up into the next class rating. All that matters is the axle ratings and combined tire weight ratings. A 3/4 ton will happily carry more than that dumb sticker says.....

@bradnoyes7955 6 лет назад
truenewb the F150 is available with a payload capacity of up to almost twice that (3,270 lbs "When Properly Equipped"), and 1,750 lbs is not that much, pretty much any 1/2 ton could handle that. That being said, physically the Ram would be capable of hauling more, but it's large curb weight (how much the truck weighs empty) due to the crew cab, long bed, and diesel engine, is so close to the max GVWR for a class 2 truck (6,000-10,000 lbs) that it can only be legally rated at 1751 lbs of payload capacity.
@TrueNewb

Brad Noyes glad to know someone actually knows what they are talking about. Proof that payload is an imaginary number. Sadly people believe marketing schemes and that’s why there’s thousands of 1/2 tons pulling campers and the whole rig looks like a broken board going down the road. But they think “it’s within payload capacity so it can haul it” lol

If I were to buy a HD/SD truck, from either of the big three, I’m gonna get an Ext Cab type, not a Crew Cab, I believe that means a Chevy/GMC OR Ford, cause Ram HD comes in reg Cab or Crew Cab and Mega Cab only! But the GM and Ford HD/SD comes with a Double Cab or SuperCab. So for me? I’d prefer a 6.5’bed with a Double Cab. My choice would be a Chevy Double Cab 4x4AWD with a gas engine, in an upper level trim. Mainly an LTZ Z71!

Man up already" when you know damn well they drive a Honda Civic. But honestly it's all about what you need for a truck. Don't get a hd and burn gas if you will never tow in your life. Man I got a 2018 Tacoma 4 cylinder and it's all I need for a truck because it gets good gas mileage it can tow my boat, and I can still make money in it with the bed or a dump trailer

It took the whole video to spend 5 seconds on towing stability. You could do a series on how a one ton and a three quarter differ for towing specifically. Rear axle weight rating is frequently overloaded in even 3/4 ton trucks without overloading payload. Also GCVW is usually 1500-1900 more in a 1 ton than a 3/4 ton. Another channel on You Tube, Keep your daydream, did a great video on towing and how to determine by weight if you are overloaded. They even provide a spreadsheet for the calculations.

You did not touch on the reason for the payload (and GVWR) ratings on the 3/4 ton vs. 1 ton trucks. Our good old government allows for (or mandates) different licensing for commercial use for trucks with a 10,000lbs GVWR or less vs. a truck with over 10,000lbs GVWR. Notice that all of the 3/4 ton trucks are 10,000lbs GVWR or under and when combined with todays heavy (well optioned + heavy diesel engines) trucks, you get low payloads on the 3/4 ton trucks - the Ram is a perfect eample with only 1700 lb payload. Yet a 1 ton has double or more payload when compared to the 3/4 model usually.

@@yoddy0 I'm sorry but you're just plain delirious, uninformed/uneducated or simply "slow". can someone please tell me why they are called 3/4 ton and 1 ton ?? I come from europe (so dont hate me for not knowing) for all I know both trucks are far heavier that 1000 lbs and/or 1000 kg. more in the 2,5 tons range i whould call them (2500 kg) I dont think its the cubic inches of displacement because that would make a 10 plus litre engine. (awesome but not common in a car)
@leonvdm
@leonvdm 5 лет назад
The "half-ton" description loosely refers to the truck's payload capacity. This means that the truck can carry up to 1000 pounds (453.5 kg) of cargo and passengers in the cab and bed. But wait a minute: If you take a look at the stats on modern half-ton pickups, you'll notice that their payload capacities exceed 1000 pounds (453.5 kg). Although early half-ton pickups could carry max loads of 1000 pounds (453.5 kg), since at least the 1960s, new and improved half-ton pickups have been able to safely carry more, surpassing their namesakes [source: Autotropolis]. But old habits die hard, and the name "half-ton" has stuck around to this day. It's still helpful as a general classification term, differentiating the group from the larger, heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickups and one-ton pickups (also obsolete terms). A better way to find out the maximum payload capacity is to check the individual truck's specs online or in the owner's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends.
